A FISTFUL OF DOLARS
FINISHES THE TRILIGY AND I THINK CLINT MAY HAVE DIRECTED A FORTH FILM
THE FIRST ONE FISTFUL IS BASED ON "YOJIMBO" japanese and are you ready...."LAST MAN STANDING" IS A REMAKE OF "YOJIMBO" WITH BRUCE WILLIS TAKES PLACE IN THE 1930'S
NOW THEN YOU HAVE THE "MAGNICENT 7"WITCH IS BASED ON "SAMARAI 7" SAME DIRECTOR AS YOJIMBO AKIRA KUROSAWA
THEN THERE IS "ONCE APON A TIME IN THE WEST"

Hombre with Paul Newman. I can't recommend this highly enough. Do yourself a favor and rent it.
Also From Dusk Til Dawn III (a horror western, but you may have already seen it...).
I know there's more, I just can't think right now... You ought to go to Netflix and click "Westerns". Then you can see the most popular ones.
Here's another good one: The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Cactus supplied an excellent list. I would highly emphasize Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...in fact, it happens to be my fourth favorite film of all time. It oozes with style, and it has a dream cast.

All good stuff. I'd certainly add:
Red River - a Howard Hawkes masterpiece. John Wayne is nearly as cruel here as he was in The Searchers, but he's got Montgomery Clift to play off of and the results are lean, macho and transcendent.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence - incredibly subversive storyline, great drama
Django - another Italian gem. Toughs guys...everywhere.
Hang 'Em High - The film starts with Clint Eastwood swinging from a tree and it's all revenge from there on out.
Big Jake - John Wayne again. Sentimental favorite of mine, makes me think fondly of my old man.
High Noon - Brilliant film making in any genre. Gary Cooper turns in a stellar performance in this film that ratchets up the tension like none other.

There have been so many great recommendations already made in this thread, and almost all of them would have been my recommendations too.
I would like to add one more to this list, which has been a film of some influence for me. Its called El Dorado, starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and James Caan. It has had a considerable influence on me because it made me hunt down and watch the Clint Eastwood and John Wayne western films.
The acting of James Caan is notable in this film, where he plays a gambler who cant shoot. It was such a powerful performance by James Caan that I am surprised he didnt get an Oscar for it. Thats my input to this list.:)

First, let me say I think it's great that younger fans are rediscovering the western. Westerns (along with Horror) has long been my favorite genre.
Most of the films I'm reccomending have probably allready been mentioned but just in case they haven't, here's a few favorites:
Since you all ready have seen my personal favorite,"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" you have to complete the trilogy
"A Fistful Of Dollars"
"A Few Dollars More"
You also may want to check out Sergio Leones other classic western
"Once Upon A Time In The West"
Staying with star Clint Eastwood check out these films
"High Plains Drifter"
"Pale Rider" (two westerns with a hint of the supernatural)
"Hang 'Em High"
"Two Mules For Sister Sara"
" The Outlaw Josey Wales"
"Unforgiven" (academy award winner)
With Star Lee Van Cleef:
"Sabata"
"Return Of Sabata"
"The Big Gundown"
"Death Rides A Horse"
With star James Stewart:
" Winchester '73"
"Man From Laramie"
"Night Passage"
The Naked Spur"
and in no particular order:
"Tombstone" (Kurt Russell)
"The Quick And The Dead" (Sharon Stone)
"Open Range" ( Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall)
"Quigley Down Under" (Tom Selleck)
"Silverado" (Kevin Kline, Scott Glen)
"Lonesome Dove" (Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones)
"The Missing" (Tommy Lee Jones)
"The Magnicent Seven " (Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen)
"The Long Riders" ( Stacy Keach)
and last, but certainly not least.. The great John Wayne:
"The Searchers"
"Rio Bravo"
"Stagecoach"
"Red River"
"El Dorado"
"True Grit"
"The War Wagon"
"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"
"Fort Apache"
"The Shootist"
and many many others.
These are just the tip of a very large iceberg. The western has been around since the begining of movies and there are hundreds to choose from.
And of course there are dozens of western TV shows, comic books and novels out there too. I hope this list helps. Have fun and enjoy.

Since all of my favorite westerns have already been mentioned, I'd like to mention them again just to reiterate how great they are:
Once Upon a Time in the West (really the only time Henry Fonda plays a villain--he's excellent; great music; favorite western)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (great ending and music)
Young Guns (the 80's western)
The Quick and the Dead (Sam Raimi's take on the western, great cast, very stylized)
Paint Your Wagon (the musical western w/Clint Eastwood)
Johnny Guitar (Mercedes McCambridge at her villainess best w/Joan Crawford)
Two Mules for Sister Sara (Shirley McLaine as a prositute masquerading as a nun w/Clint Eastwood)
Tombstone (great cast)
Quigley Down Under (a western in Australia w/Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman)
Blazing Saddles (best comedy western of all time)

I'd suggest The Great Silence if you want something similar to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but better. Of course, Once Upon a Time in the West is Leone's best western.
You also might like Dead Man, Forty Guns, Johnny Guitar, The Shooting, The Missouri Breaks, Man of the West, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, and Pat Garret and Billy the Kid. The latter I find to be Peckinpah's best western.
Oh, then there's Whity and A Girl is a Gun. Both I'd call Euro art-house westerns. Enjoy!!!

Damn, I forgot to mention two great Robert Mitchum westerns, Pursued and Track of the Cat. Then of course, there is all the great classic John Ford and Howard Hawks westerns which have already been mentioned. My favorites from them respectively are My Darling Clementine and Red River. I should also mention William A. Wellman's The Ox-Bow Incident, tho I think his Track of the Cat is slightly better. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

I just thought of the best one, and no one has mentioned it yet! It is:
The Appaloosa (1966)
Marlon Brando is great, but the Mexican villain steals the show. This film doesn't have any of that corny John Wayne Hollywood corniness feel to it. This is a bad ass artistic western. A cool ending too, and a tough choice gets made. Check it out.

I am major western fan-o...they come on AMC every Sat morning and I usually catch them all. There is an old one out there with...Ronald Reagan...yep, I believe its the Man with the Tin Star...damn good western. Many modern westerns (inc. Wyatt Earp w Costner) have stolen some of the scenes and dialogue out of this one.
By the way...The Appaloosa is total shit, sorry but that Brando movie is horrible...now One Eyed Jacks w him is a good revenge western.
Grim Prarie Tales ahas a story called McComas in it with Dylan McDermot that is cool.
Once Upon a TIme in the West...the Good the Bad and the Ugly...Great Films...so is Warlock and just about any western with Fonda, Peck, Stewart, Wayne...I have all John Wayne westerns, even the 1930's ones on DVD, someone posted it earlier, but it was correct...Last Man Standing is a Solid remake of Fistful of Dollars.

"The Virginian" (1946)
Arriving at Medicine Bow, eastern schoolteacher Molly Woods meets two cowboys, irresponsible Steve and the "Virginian," who gets off on the wrong foot with her. To add to his troubles, the Virginian finds that his old pal Steve is mixed up with black-hatted Trampas and his rustlers...then finds himself at the head of a posse after said rustlers; and Molly hates the violent side of frontier life.
Decent remake of the Owen Wister novel, not quite as good as the Gary Cooper version, but not a bad film at all.

"Adio's Sabata"
-Yul Brynner
Master gunslinger Sabata helps some Mexican revolutionaries steal a wagonload of gold.
The "imitation" Sabata is IMO a terrific western adventure, much better then the official sequel "Return Of Sabata"
For those who don't know, this film was not originally going to be a Sabata film. It was originally going to be titled Indio Black, but the title was changed to cash in on the original Sabata film.
Lee Van Cleef was unavailable to play Sabata, as he was committed to making The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972) where he played Chris Adams, a role made famous by Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven (1960). Instead, Brynner signed on for the role of Sabata, a role made famous by Van Cleef.

Tombstone (Val Kilmer at his absolute best)

Havent read through the whole thread, so these may have already been brought up...sorry if Im repeating things that have been covered. I'll try to mention some lesser talked about ones.
Have you seen the show Firefly?
It's essentially a western in space, with more emphasis on the western elements than the sci-fi. It only ran for one season but has a HUGE following - the movie Serenity is based on it.
You can get the boxset very inexpensively, I highly recommend it.
A little know one that I enjoy is The Shooting. It's really slow paced, but thats the only flaw. Really well written/acted characters (inc. a very young Jack Nicholson), a great plot and one of the coolest endings that Ive ever seen. It hasnt had a quality DVD release unfortunately, but you can get a public domain copy for dirt cheap. The picture/sound quality could be better, but its watchable. Check it out!
Another one worth watching that nobody seems to talk about is The Jackals. In all honesty its not really anything special, but it has Vincent Price has an old, withered prospector. The movie as a whole is pretty straight forward, but just to see Vincent in a western makes it worth a look.
What about The Quick and the Dead? Sam Raimi directed it...the plot is really basic, but the characters are cool and the cast is perfect. Really fun little movie.
Maverick is in a similar vein. Mel Gibson's version is a good time, but personally I prefer the original TV show. Only 3 episodes are currently available on DVD (plus one more as a bonus feature on the 2-disc version of Unforgiven), but they're all incredibly entertaining. Great sense of humor and James Garner makes for a damn cool cowboy.

Unforgiven is all about the performances; its a wonderfully acted film, and actually just a cut above most westerns I believe. Anyway, Eastwood's character is hard, outright cold blooded in a lot of ways; its not a movie with any clear hero that's for sure. It just has to be seen. But it does move a little slow. Wonderful film, but this is coming from someone that isn't a huge fan of westerns though. I like a few, obviously ( I put a list up) but a western is not often my first choice.
Oh and Young Guns is great fun, I think it moves pretty well.

how is The Great Silence?
and how is it when compared to Django?
which has more action?
_____V_____
05-14-2007, 06:05 PM
Both are pretty much incomparable. The Great Silence in in the same mold as the Leone movies...only set in the mountains and snow, ala Pale Rider. I think Sergio Corbucci did a straight lift from Leone's FAFDM for the whole outlaw angle, and mixed it with a tale of revenge. You ll be reminded of Pale Rider more than once (maybe Eastwood used this for his movie, who knows?). And of course, Ennio Morricone's score is awesome. Overall, you ll love it.
Django is an out-and-out action flick. The pace and the action is relentless. Its like the El Mariachi series, only with more action. Desperado was a shameless rip-off of Django, come to think of it.
My advice...watch both of em. Two great pieces of western cinema, if there ever was one. Ranked next to the Leone trilogy in my book.

The Legend of Frenchie King (1971)
Hannie Caulder (1971)
China 9, Liberty 37 (1978)
I'd leave these 3 off my list. King is a crappy sex farce with Brigitte Bardot and the ever bizarre Michael J. Pollard. Claudia Cardinale is hot, but totally wasted here. Equally wasted is Warren Oates in the pretentious(and completely boring) China. Caulder is the ultimate tragedy, misusing Ernest Borgnine, Christopher Lee, Jack Elam and Strother Martin(what are the odds of getting 4 like that in 1 film) for the purpose of propping up Raquel Welch's limited talent. If you gotta watch a Welch western, make it 100 Rifles. At least you can chuckle at Burt Reynold's hairpiece flopping around.

I agree. Palance gave one of the most understated(and briefest) villain portrayals in the genre. Sad to see he got ignored in the villain finals. His role in Bagdad Cafe is equally brilliant. And I'll always admire his loathing of the film industry.

Yea, but those last 15-20 minutes were one of the most awesome finales I've seen in many a western. The film builds up characters nicely, so I can forgive some of the draggier parts. More dimensions makes you care more about the action.
If you plan on getting Django, look up its sequel too, Django Strikes Again. Although not as great as the original, its still a decent watch with lots of action, and the same central character, Franco Nero.
This was so-so to me. Some of the original Django knock offs were better IMO. But it did have some of the old timers in it. The Djangos were more popular than the Winnatous in Germany.
You're right about Hang Em High.........it is a bit slow.
Had one(actually 2) of the best lynching scenes around. This was Eastwood's most successful US film for a long time until High Plains Drifter came along. I love it for that theme song, and a boatload of great actors- Pat Hingle(steals the show), Inger Stevens, Ben Johnson, Bruce Dern, Dennis Hopper, and even bits by Alan Hale Jr.(Skipper) and Bob Steele(way old school westerns). Ed Begley as the lead villain was the only prob for me. He was just too old to be forbearing enough in the part. A good western demands a good shootout ending, which wasn't provided here.

Phantoms Review: Standard "B" western. Most of the film takes place in the dessert and just shows the stars trekking across the sands running from the bad guys. Nothing very exciting. Santee and his wife take Jody in and a father-son relationship begins to grow. Then the gang that killed Santee's son shows up.
Phantom's Review: Glen Ford was one of the best western actors, but "Santee" was not one of his better pictures. Some decent action, but overall the film is kind of dull.

"Border Patrol" (1943)

They ride into town and find the mine owner is one man government. He arrests them on trumped up charges and theyre tried before a kangaroo court.

"Curse Of The Undead" (1959)
- Micheal Pate
Plot Synopsis: IMDB
The cinema's first vampire Western! Young women in a small Western town are dying one by one of an unknown malady involving massive blood loss. The Carter family's ranch is being terrorized by ruthless land baron Buffer. And a mysterious black-clad gunfighter with an aversion to sunlight has just arrived in town
Phantom's Review: I've always been a fan of both westerns and horror movies, (especially the classic black and white movies)and on those rare occasions that someone tries to combine the two always interests me.
While this is basically a standard "B" movie. It has some very nice performances from the actors and it maintains, both, a great horror atmosphere (with some cool spooky music)and some classic western action.
If you don't take it to seriously, this is a fun movie.
I'll have to keep an eye out for this one it sounds great.

"The Man From Del Rio" (1956)
- Anthony Quinn, Katy Jurado
Dave Robles, a Mexican gunfighter passing through the town of Mesa out draws and kills a famous outlaw.
He's then invited by a former gunfighter turned saloon owner named Barrister to join a gang he's forming and take over the town.
Instead Robles takes the job as Sheriff and becomes Barrister's enemy.
Phantom's review: A very well acted little movie. Light on action, but has a good story and is an interesting character study. Watch for legendary character actor Whit Bissell as the town drunk. He steals every scene he's in.

"Gunfight At Comanche Creek"
- Audie Murphy, DeForest Kelley
Plot :IMDB
Comanche Creek, Colorado, 1875: Prisoner Jack Mason is broken out of jail by a gang of strangers. They use him in a robbery, then when the dead-or-alive reward is high enough, they shoot him and collect. The National Detective Agency, now knowing the gang's methods, arranges to have agent Bob Gifford jailed in Comanche Creek for train robbery. The gang takes the bait (not before Gifford catches the eye of lovely saloon-keeper Abbie) and Gifford goes undercover to try and stop the bad guys.
Phantom's Review: Decent "B" western with some good action and an interesting story. Best part of the movie: Deforest Kelley (of "Star Trek" fame) as a ruthless cold hearted S.O.B. Makes you totally forget kind "Dr. McCoy"
Annoying part of the film: A narrator. It's almost like the film was written as a radio show and then switched to the movies. Completely unneeded.

No, I haven't had time to catch up on all the thread, but here's a few quick offerings.
THE WILD BUNCH. There can only be one. And this may be my favorite. Simultaneously about blood, vengeance, loyalty, fraternal love, respect and violence for the sake of violence, this is a stone cold classic, towering above others in the field.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. Huge and epic but with the smallest of human motives at its heart, there's humor and grimness aplenty to be found.
THE ROAD WARRIOR. Go ahead, prove to me that it isn't a western in anything but setting. Total western, as good as they come.

Coen Brothers' Next is True Grit
Source: Variety
March 23, 2009
Joel and Ethan Coen will next put their spin on True Grit, the iconic Western that won John Wayne an Oscar.
The Paramount film will be more faithful to the Charles Portis book than the 1969 pic, also distributed by Paramount.
Portis' novel is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father's killer in hostile Indian territory.
But while the original film was a showcase for Wayne, the Coens' version will tell the tale from the girl's point of view.
The project reteams the brothers with Scott Rudin, their partner on the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men. The Coens wrote the screenplay.
The original starred Kim Darby as the teen, Wayne and Glen Campbell as the lawmen, Jeff Corey as the killer and featured Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper as fellow outlaws.

DJANGO!!!!! This movie must be seen to be believed. Made in 1966 it's bloodier by far than anything Hammer Studios was putting out at the time.
The setting is a stunning mud covered apocalyptic ghost town. The main character stomps around dragging a coffin like an extra from Un Chien Andalou.
The bad guys ride around in bizaar bright red hoods and scarves (why? who cares, they look wild against the stark backgrounds). The deep focus photography is stunning. I would love to own some stills from this flick.
The dialogue and dubbing are absolutely terrible.....but it doesn't matter. It's
all about surreal imagery and violence (mud and blood). This movie has to be Quinton Tarrantino's wet dream. A Must See for any Horror Fan.
The Blue Underground Disc is terrific. Highly recommended.

"Where The Hell's That Gold ??!!??"
-Willie Nelson, Jack Elam
Plot: IMDB
On the run after stealing and hiding a large amount of gold, two outlaws find themselves travelling through 1895 Mexico on a train full of dynamite as rebels. Apache Indians, Wells Fargo agents, and Federal troops trail them. When they are captured by the Mexican authorities, they scheme to keep their ill-gotten riches with the help of a sassy madam and her prostitutes...
Phantoms Review: Well acted, but dull. Great chemistry between Nelson and Elam and Delta Burke as the Madame is fine, but the movie just doesn't have what it takes to be a really entertaining film.

just watched The Big Silence aka The Great Silence (1968):
a classic spaggeti western from Sergio Corbucci......my take is, Corbucci is to Leone as Fulci is to Argento. Everything is a bit sloppier and more extreme. The atmosphere and mood is everything here. Grim and cold are the impressions this flick leaves you with. If Django is blood in the mud....this gem of movie is blood in the snow. Klaus Kinski is terrific as the sadistic bad guy.
Definitely a movie worth checking out!!!

The secret plan for the mission is overheard by a southern belle who must be taken along to assure her silence. The Union officers each have different reasons for wanting to be on the mission.

"Escape From Fort Bravo" (1953)
-William Holden
Plot: IMDB
In the Civil War, Fort Bravo is a prison camp for captured southerners. Its isolated position and unfriendly natives make escape almost impossible, but anyone who tries is always brought back by by-the-book Captain Roper. A group of prisoners hatch a plot to get away by bringing in a southern belle to distract the Captain. The plan seems to work, but the inhospitable desert, the murderous Indians, and - most importantly - the Colonel apparently wronged in love mean that this is only the start.

A little late to this thread, but...
THE WILD BUNCH - Man, if you aren't horrified by those kids at the beginning of the movie, you may not have a soul. The rest of the movie is just great as well.
LEONE's WESTERNS - Honestly, there isn't a bad one in the bunch. THE GOOD, THE BAD and THE UGLY is particularly recommended. One of the great cinematic showdowns of all time between Van Cleef and Eastwood.
THE ROAD WARRIOR (aka MAD MAX II) - Totally a western, and a damn fine one at that.
BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALBERTO GARCIA - Stretching "western" a bit, as it's really a crime drama set in Mexico, but there's plenty of western feel to it, and it centers around a severed head that various parties want and will kill over.
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN - Man, this one is off the rails. The seventies were a crazy, crazy time in Hollywood.

"The Burrowers" (2009)
Plot: IMDB
It is 1879 in the Dakota Territories. A handful of brave pioneers maintain isolated settlements in the badlands beyond civilization. Irish Immigrant Fergus Coffey is near to winning the hand of his beloved Maryanne when she is suddenly taken from him, her family brutally abducted in a nighttime attack on their homestead. Suspicion falls immediately on hostile Indians. Experienced Indian fighters Will Parcher and John Clay form a posse and set out to rescue the kidnapped settlers, taking along a naïve teenager hoping to prove himself a man, an ex-slave looking to find his place in the world and their ranch-hand, Coffey. But as men vanish in the night and horrific evidence accumulates with the dead and dying, the group discovers that their prey is far more terrifying than anything human, and their prospects are far more terrible than death.
Phantom's Review: I've always been a fan of both westerns and horror movies and always found it interesting when someone tries to combine the two, but in most cases these hybrid films, well.....suck. But much to my surprise "The Burrowers" is actually a decent film. Lots of western action, a decent story and some fun looking monsters. Not a great movie by any means, but entertaining.

"The Left Handed Gun" (1958)
-Paul Newman
Plot: IMDB
William Bonney - Billy the Kid - gets a job with a cattleman known as 'The Englishman,' and is befriended by the peaceful, religious man. But when a crooked sheriff and his men murder the Englishman because he plans to supply the local Army fort with his beef, Billy decides to avenge the death by killing the four men responsible, throwing the lives of everyone around him - Tom and Charlie, two hands he worked with; Pat Garrett, who is about to be married; and the kindly Mexican couple who take him in when he's in trouble - into turmoil, and endangering the General Amnesty set up by Governor Wallace to bring peace to the New Mexico Territory.
Phantom's Review: Like most Hollywood "Billy The Kid" movies, this one is more fiction than fact, but Newman does his usual fine performance and the film is an okay piece of entertainment.

Plot: IMDB
Master swindler James Reavis devotes years to forging documents that will give him claim to the entire state of Arizona. He finds a young girl whom he believes is an orphan and hires a governess to educate her in the manner of the Spanish aristocracy. He invents deceased parents for her whose ancestry can be traced to a mythical Spanish nobleman. He then insinuates himself into a Spanish monastery for three years so he can access its biblioteca which carries the records of Spanish land grants. He later joins a gypsy band to have access to the library of a Spanish noblemen where he can alter duplicate documents. When everything is in place, he marries the now-grown young woman and puts in his claim as her husband as the Baron of Arizona.
Phantom's Review: Based on true events, This is an excellent movie. The great Vincent Price (a couple of years away from becoming a horror star) is perfect as the brilliant forger who almost gets away with stealing an entire state. Not a typical western, but a great movie to see. I remember several years ago on "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" Price was being interviewed and he said "Baron.." was his favorite of the movies he had made.

Phantom's Review: While the plot is standard, this is a well acted film with some good action and great scenery. Stewart Granger is fine as the gunman trying to make up the lost years to his son. Rhonda Fleming is kind of wasted as the love interest, but does good with what she has to work with.

Paramount to Show Us Doc Holliday's Adventures
Source:Variety
December 18, 2009
Paramount Pictures has bought Chad St. John's action adventure spec script The Further Adventures of Doc Holliday and hopes to turn it into a Western-style tentpole.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura ("Transformers" films) will produce via his Paramount-based company.
The studio is keeping the story under wraps, but the project is described as a history-based action adventure tale in the vein of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films.
The famously tuberculosis-ridden gunfighter Holliday is best known for his friendship with Wyatt Earp and for his role in 1881's Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.
