but in some cases i believe that when an artist begins to sound the same..
sing the same crappy unstylish music, then ppl get tired of them and move on...
as in this case.
For those who don't know who she is..Bic Runga (NZ)had a hit in the movie American pie.

Music artists are well-known to get a higher percentage cut from the sales of live performances and merchandising than CD sales anyway. So if this person is needing to get a second job, it is because people are also not interested in seeing her live or buying her t-shirts. I can understand why this would be the case.

However, the record industry is no doubt counting all those downloads as potential lost sales and wanting THEIR cut of that back. However, this is flawed logic - people will download and listen to something that they would never consider buying. This is like llistening to a song on the radio - lots of people will listen to a song on the radio (and enjoy it) but never consider buying the album. So all these downloads are not necessarily "lost sales"

This singer has had what? songs that have had any sort of mild international popularity. Downloads or not - I wouldn't think she could live off this. NZ is not a big market (nor is Australia) and no artist can get really rich off some local success.

Sounds like she is a bit of a shill for the music industry to have a cry about downloading.

It makes me laugh to see such "bad boys" as Metallica cry over people downloading.

They try to portray this image of being anti-establishment, fuck the rules, play hard. But when it comes down to it, it is an image. They are exactly like the people that their stage persona taunts.

The fact is. None of you should even be talking. If you haven't released a CD and made music as your career. You have no knowledge of how difficult it is to be a musician.

America doesn't understand the value of entertainers. At least musicians. Modest Mouse will work restlessly for a year. Putting their heart and soul into the songs, just so some ungrateful person will download it and dispose it with the rest of his collection of MP3's. And that's all music has become, disposable. While actors & sports stars make billions. Just because a song isn't an object or a piece of material, Its not viewed as stealing.

Don't give me this, "if the album is good, people will buy it" Bullshit. I don't think anything I'll type will deter anyone from downloading music. But these same people don't really love music. They just say they do :o

I love listening to music.

I view downloading music as stealing in the way that I view recording a movie off of cable as stealing. Yeah, I'm paying for the cable connection, but I'm not paying specifically for that movie. So I record Running Scared off of HBO and watch it whenever I want. I didn't see it in theaters, I didn't buy the DVD, but here I am with a copy of the movie on DVD to watch whenever I want.

Letting people Download our music for FREE has helped us a lot. It allows people the opportunity to hear our band that might not hear us otherwise. The majority of our money is generated from our merchandise like T shirts and Cd's. I get paid like $50 bucks from the actual show, but that only for 45 min. of playing drums. Rich crybaby rock stars make way more cash from touring than from record sales. My friend Chad plays drums for 3-11 and he told me that their last record didn't even sell 75,000 copies due to people stealing it off the web, so basically that paid for the cost of recording the album, but they make a killing on tour, so it all works out in the end.

I don't download either - I pretty much have all the music I want (got a lot of CD's and LP's before downloading became a real possibility). Also, for the music I like I prefer to have CD quality and the coverart/booklet etc.

I woudn't buy from iTunes, however. Not just because of the low bit rate, but because of the DRM that basically means that if in the future iPods become crappy and something else is better, my music on CD will be able to be transferred. On the other hand, iTunes downloads become pretty useless.
