I know most of you here probably hate musicals, but this one might just make you sit up and take notice.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story:
(From Wikipedia)
Sweeney Todd is a fictional villain/antihero. A barber and serial killer, the character appears in various English language works starting in the mid-19th century. His weapon of choice is a straight razor, with which he cuts his victim's throats; in some versions of the story his friend and accomplice, Margery (sometimes Nellie) Lovett, bakes the carcasses into meat pies.
Stephen Sondheim wrote a wonderfully black musical about it and now Tim Burton is Directing tyhe filmed adaptation starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter & Sacha Baron Cohen.
Should be bloody, Gothic fun!

I'm always in the extreme minority, but I just do not care for Tim Burton. I know, blasphemer!! I just don't find him all that interesting with the exception of Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow. He generally gets a lot of slack from me, too, because I love Johnny Depp. I hold him singularly responsible for giving Helena Bonham Carter a career that never should have been.

She had over 20 films under her belt before she crossed paths with Burton.
and Rayne - you're waaaaay too goth to be into musicals, I understand:p

Hmm...20? I can only think of 2 things I saw her in prior to her Burton stuff. The miniseries Merlin and Fight Club. Perhaps they were smaller UK pics? Either way, so be it. I just always associate her with his work.
Please tell me Danny Elfman's doing all the music...

I love musicals period.
Depp should keep doing this and stay away from my Sin City. rawr. but let's not get off topic...
This is so exciting. I love the story, I love musicals, I love Tim Burton and Depp. I'm pretty pumped. THis is my first time seeing the costume too, looks nice.

Sweeney Todd has great music that actually adds to the atmosphere . The musical isn't strained in the least.

I saw the 1982 play of Sweeney Todd (on DVD) and LOVED it. It's got very well made story that includes comedy, horror, a bit of action, tragedy... unfortunately romance... *shudder* It really is an entertaining story, and I hope Tim Burton does a good job on it.
Normally I don't like musicals much, but I believe this particular one was marvelous. Very well written and beautiful. The music always has a chilling feeling to it, even in times of joy. The lyrics are really well written, and the singing is complicated and wonderful to listen to.
As for the composer, it is going to be Stephen Sondheim. The movie is based on his play, and Tim Burton thinks it would be best to have him compose. He says it's a misuse of Elfman's talents anyway, making him recreate something like this...
BTW I'm new. My name's Ilona.
