Well? What are your favorites and why? Do you have a fascination with a certain war? I think it's high time for a discussion!
I'm personally fond of Vietnam flicks, most especially Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Apocalypse Now. The war was a horribly terrifying one, and it's interesting to see the effects it had on innocent people who, in most cases, didn;t even know what they were fighting for.

Patton is a good WWII flick with an exceptional performance by the George C. Scott. Have you seen it?

When I was much younger, probably too young to appreciate it.I think I will rent it and watch it as an adult.

Totally agree with those choices. I'd add in The Deer Hunter and Hamburger Hill. As far as WWII, I'd have to go with The Dirty Dozen and Patton. And I've got to include The Outlaw Josey Wales (American Civil War). Hell, I even enjoyed Sergeant York (WWI).

I'm a fan of WW2 history and Civil War History. So, a few classics that come to mind are:
Glory (great, GREAT film!)
Gettysburg (pretty damn good too)
Gone With the Wind (don't rag on me for this one!)
North and South (mini-series)
Patton (George C. Scott is amazing)
Saving Private Ryan (maybe the most disturbing war movie)
Stalag 17 (an older classic)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Dirty Dozen
Just a few great ones that come to mind on those two wars.

You know, I realized a few days back that Ive never actually seen a war movie. Ive seen plenty that have war as a backdrop (Casablanca, Pan's Labyrinth, ect.) but no actual war movies.
I've been thinking about picking up that "Dossier" edition of Apocalypse Now, its pretty cheap...so is Full Metal Jacket.
I'll use this thread for ideas, thanks Alky:)

It is a very good movie, Rayne. And there isn't a thing wrong with not liking war movies. Usually, they're either your cup of tea or they aren't, end of story.
Return: Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket are great ones to start out with. You can usually pick up Platoon pretty cheap, too, try that one. I got it for $6.99 a couple of nights ago. Great flick.

I think All Quiet on the Western Front was really overrated, and badly acted on the part of the lead.

I'd have to say that Saving Private Ryan rises above all others. I dont think ive ever seen a movie that captured the horrors of war as well as this one did.

I'll add a couple of 'out there' ones...
'Sink the Bismarck'
and 'Das Boot'. Preferably the mini-series, but it was edited down into one long film. It's about life aboard a German U-boat - claustrophobic and scary. And very unusual to see a film from the German point of view. There are points in it where you're really rooting for them, and it's so original to 'humanise' the Germans. Brilliant.
Also loved Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Schindler's List, Hamburger Hill.

Das Boot is awesome, good call.
I would also add Catch 22 and Siege of Firebase Gloria.
