Cannibal Holocaust is the best of the cannibal films IMHO. The others that I have seen are
-Cannibal Ferox (not as good)
-Dr. Butcher MD (sort of a cannibal film but has zombies too)
-Cannibal by Ruggero Deodato (who also directed Cannibal Holocaust) that has been rereleased as something else. The re-release may include extra scenes that mine does not. The one I have is 88 minutes and not worth seeing.
I just read about Cannibals AKA Mondo Cannibale, from Jesus Franco. Sounds pretty juicy.

yeh i have cannibal ferox on import vcd its the uncut version and it it pretty lame...it just doesnt even compare to cannibal holocaust!!
do u prefer zombie movies to cannibal?
CH is a great film but it's great because it is really well done, great story, fantastic direction and the crew would have been scared for real.
The tribes are real cannibal tribes for example and the crew didn't know they would have to do some of the things they had to do.
This film though, it has to be said, is not for everyone.
There is some extreme animal cruelty (real) some extreme rape scenes (not real) and not many men can watch a man have his pride and joy chopped off and not many women can like an abortion by hand.
A great, shocking film but it will disturb you and shock you if you get the uncut version, as much for why you are watching it as due to what you see.
There are very few films that have the power to mark you for life and this is one of them, I enjoyed it a lot but couldn't stomach the animal scenes much and had to question what I was willing to allow to entertain me.
They don't make films like this now and I am glad in a lot of respects but sad as until Blaire Witch the art of moving the audience with horror rather than boo are you scared yet? had long been forgotten in the west. BTW once you see this you will know where the BW story came from.
So all in all get it if you want to see how mind blowing horror can be but watch it before you get your mates round to show off, they might just ask you wtf you are doing showing them something like this and label you sick, lol.
Another thing to remember in the UK is that if customs catch you importing this you may well be in trouble, as in more than a fine, this uncut version is right at the top of the trying to pervert society ban list :)
Having said all that (I had to, some people might seriously regret ever having seen this) it is a great film and a great example of how to scare, sicken and blow away your audience with film and get them to question themselves.
As the film points out, I wonder who the real cannibals are, kinda the point of the film really.
Anyway, wasn't trying to put you off this, in fact all this would have no doubt encouraged the younger reader, lol, I just wanted to give an honest account of the film.
Should be in everyones collection, sadly not everyone will make it to the end.

I do prefer zombie movies... pure shock doesn't interest me much anymore. It's probably the supernatural themes that keeps me interested, not the slasher/shock element.
It seems like I've always heard about extreme exploitation films being banned in the UK. Wasn't the popular term 'video nasties'? I always assumed that those laws went out with Thatcher.
yeah pretty much, we can watch anything now, as long as it has been passed as ok.
We can watch almost any consenting adults in a porn film for example but if it hasnt been rated its still illegal.
We have had audition uncut on normal tv recently! for example but nothing to do with animal cruelty or things like extreme sexual violence (strong rape etc) and other stuff.
If it makes a woman look like a victim its ok but if it lingers on it, no way, lol.
So yeah we can watch a lot more now, we have the same laws as Amsterdam etc so it's all good.
BUT the CH uncut version will have the animal stuff cut out and quite possibly the rape scenes, the blood and guts stuff will be fine.
Its cloudy water, not too clear and it still comes down to a group of old men allowing the film through but legaly they have to let most through these days.
We don't stop stuff on political issues either (like the trouble Battle Royale had in the states) etc.

I've seen every Italian cannibal movie from Slave of the Cannibal God (the first) on up to the hybrids like Dr Butcher MD, and I have to say that this sub-genre is really more of a geek show than anything else. I've outgrown watching horror movies simply for gore effects, and the killing of real animals on film is just sick. It's no longer art when you have reached this final Grand Guignol excess. Plus it's an insult to horror fans, filmmakers thinking we're all drooling, illiterate seriall killers in the making. Slave of the Cannibal God even shows a close-up of a monkey's fear-crazed eyes as it is slowly squeezed to death by a boa constrictor. Theses movies generally showcase how inept a director truly is--bad zooms, choppy editing, horrible framing, etc...all the trademarks of a hack. If they had any talent they would have been doing real horror movies like Argento and Fulci instead of slowly mutilating turtles for a leering camera.
Fulci was repulsed by this genre. Argento is a vegetarian, and has said, "Nothing should die so that I may live."
The only films I'll watch that showcase actual animal death are the works of Sam Peckinpah--not because I approve, but because to deprive yourself of the Wild Bunch or The Ballad Of Cable Hogue would be a true injustice. (Peckinpah's daughter attacked him after he wired a gila monster's head to explode in the latter film, and the special effects guy says he's still depressed over the whole experience)
Some filmmakers have edited into their work stock footage of slaughterhouses. Though unpleasant, at least this is bought footage of actual slaughterhouses, the slaughtering not being done simply for the geek theatrics of murder on film.
I should point out that though Dr Buthcer MD is truly an inept film, at least no animals were killed in its making (and I do have the Anchor Bay DVD filling a niche in my zombie collection). The only claim to fame Cannibal Holocaust can boast is being the inspiration for the documentary-like framing device of Blair Witch.

Well I have to say...that was very well written!! Its cool that you have these thoughts on the film...as this topic was brought up to find persons views on the film...that was your personal view...what are everyone elses on the subject?
yeh I do agree though the animal slaughters were not required to make the movie shocking as the film could have still been stomach churning without them...you say the crappy filming is not a good thing but i thinhk that makes it seem like your there if you know what i mean...making the whole experience more scary.
Thats my opinion...
