Songs in horror

So we all know how atmospheric music can add a whole new dimension to a horror production, but what about when the characters actually do music? I just heard about the musical production of Evil Dead, and it sounds fantastic - I would love to see it, but I doubt very much whether it will make its way over here to the UK.

I suppose the other 2 examples I can think of are the (classic) Rocky Horror (Picture) Show and the musical episode of Buffy.

Now I'm not a big fan of musicals in general, in fact there are only maybe half a dozen that I can even watch, but for me the above examples work really well. Obviously the inclusion of a 'musical' element is always going to add a light-hearted edge to a production, but what do you guys think of songs in horror, and what other examples can you think of?

Flame me all you want but I thought the musical version of Buffy was hilarious. Although I would be too embarrassed to watch it with anyone else in the room. I give praise to the people behind the scenes that made that work. It was quite the chance to take. That being said, I think that all musicals are hilarious and can't take them seriously.

Steel Grave in Opera is dope.

Repo Man and Return of the Living Dead.

But Mean Streets did it first (well for me) with full effect.

Tarantino........ but whatever that was pretty dirivative of the shit I mentioned.

A horror musical could be totally killer but the amount of people run into that hate Phantom of the Paradise really trips me out. I love that shit. Once music settles and burns a lot of shit outta itself it'll be a killer concept. It'd definatley be some nu-metal fest these if it was done now. Not to mention a lot of the classic horror rockers are past their prime and gong thru the motions (I'm not gonna sacrifice scared cows .... :D )

Darren Bousman (Saw 2 & 3) just got the greenlight to make a horror rock opera called REPO about human organ thieves. Could be interesting.

There is also a Broadway (or it may be off-Broadway) Musical called Sweeney Todd that they are currently making a movie adaptation directed by Tim Burton w/Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Helena Bohnam Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Sweeney Todd's a period piece about a serial killer barber and his neighbor who bake parts of their victims into meat pies. I hear it's very good.

I saw Evil Dead : The Musical two or three years ago when it was just beginning, and it was a riot! One of the things that made my laugh the most in my entire life.

I mean, they had a song called "what the fuck was that?" after someone in the cabin hears some noise coming from the outside in full-blown musical comedy style, that was pure gold. Plus there were a few blood shots thrown into the audience, so that was quite an experience!

I really like the classics on CD. The original Dracula had a great soundtrack! I did find a CD with a variety of horror movie soundtracks on sale during halloween! It's kind of cool. Music from Halloween, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elmstreet, ect. Perfect background when I'm writing.

The original Dracula didnt have a soundtrack. Just the excerpt from Swann Lake over the title cards.

Phillip Glass wrote one fairly recently, which is what Im assuming you're refering to...Personally, I dont mind it, but the film is much more effective without it. Pretty good score, but totally out of place. It's like that Type O Negative version of Nosferatu.

Anyway....sorry about that, just bugs me:o

Watched Masters of Horror: Pick Me Up a couple nights back...pretty good, but there was a handful of scenes that I missed completly cause of the stupid score :(

I see no one has mentioned Cannibal! the Musical yet. The Snowman song still gets a laugh out of me every time.

There was once a musical for Carrie. They say it was one of the worst Broadway flops of all time.

As far as music in movies go, I love a lot of the soundtrack to Lost Boys. I thought it worked perfectly for that movie, especially the song "Cry Little Sister." Urge mentioned Demon Knight, which has a kick ass soundtrack. Then there are movies like Queen of the Damned, which the soundtrack is the only good part of.

I really dig the sanctimonious Dark wave kinda vibe of the Lost Boys soundtrack. If People are Strange wasn't a Doors song and therefore blasphemous to cover, I'd say the cover was more than solid.

I loved that song, "The Legend of Madman Mars," sung by that guy around the campfire in "MADMAN." It's actually a creepy song and the actor sings it in a strange way and makes weird facial contortions at the same time, so it's quite a scene. And it's actually a song about the very maniac the movie is about!

Any movie with goblin on the soudtrack is golden. Suspiria and DOTD.
