Ozzfest, the annual heavy-metal festival, will be free to concertgoers this year.
Festival founders Ozzy Osbourne and his wife, Sharon, announced the decision at a news conference in Los Angeles yesterday. Ozzy also revealed he will headline the festival.
Fans will get access to the tour by visiting ozzfest.com, though details remain unclear. The 25-date tour, which launches July 7 in L.A. and includes a stop in New York, will be underwritten by corporate sponsors who have yet to be named. What's more, bands will not be paid and no lineup has been confirmed.
"We know there aren't any major headlining acts that would tour all summer for nothing," Sharon said in a statement, "but we're confident we can turn some of the genre's biggest bands on to what we're doing and have them come out to play a date or two."
The move comes as Ozzfest heads into its 12th year as the most financially successful touring festival of all time, reaping $205 million since its inception, according to Billboard magazine.
