I have caught this show on Discovery and the Military channel a few times. Being a military brat myself, i still have an interest in a lot of the gadgets and toys that the various branches of the US military use, so i figured this would be an interesting place to discuss your favorite old and especially new ways of killing our fellow man. (Ok, maybe not favorite. Bad coice of words, but the ones you find most interesting)
Now, to get things straight before any war discussions begin, I dont like the current war, and i dont think we should still be there, BUT, I think that war is a reality of life, and having the edge, and especially the ability to end a conflict brutally and quickly is important.
It drives me NUTS that we have the power to end engagements quickly, but politicians choose to drag the out for years.
At any rate, the technology is interesting.
F-22 Raptor. i have been following this thing since i first heard about it back in the early nineties. it is incredible, combining stealth technology, with the ability to cruise at greater than the speed of sound (it doesnt use afterburners for speeds up to 1.5 mach, meaning it burns much less fuel than conventional mach speed aiorcraft). It also uses vectored thrust to enhance maneuverability, so it can actually make multiple turns INSIDE the turn radius of other aitcraft.
The show i was watching yesterday said that four fighters against an f-22 is not even close to being a fair fight, the Raptors can easily take out the other 4 with minimal effort.
Metalstorm. Australia is home to some really cool things (Funnelwebs, koalas, Cheeba), but how about a gun that can fire 1 million rounds a minute?! This thing is just scary. the same company also makes a grenade launcher that can fire a few hundred rounds a minute... regodamndiculous.

With some of the targeting systems they have today, i dont doubt it.
In the same episode of Futureweapons i saw with the f-22, they had something that anytone who has played Half-Life 2 should be familiar with, the mp-7. Unlike what most people woould think, it's not a classic submachine gun, it is actually a compact rifle, with 4.7mm rifle rounds for ammunition. The show's host fired one on a range....
Its a small gun, with a small bullet, but holy crap does it hit hard. At i think 100 feet, it went THROUGH a helmet and bullet proof vest. it can shoot semi-auto, or, at a max rate of 950 rounds a minute.... to put it into perspective, the minigun fires 1000 rounds a minute. (but top out at 10,000)
i got a hard on with all this gun talk,......am i republican

these weapons sound like overkill when they're usually firing at shanties. I think the time/money/effort could be better spent elsewhere.

Overkill is the idea, they just dont have the wherewithall to use it properly. The first gulf war showed a lot of "proper use" of our arsenal, the initial strikes were so hard and fast, the iraqi's elite soldiers were surrenduring to news crews.
the entire republican guard was wiped out with 2 bombs dropped on the same location. read up on "Daisy Cutters", they are scary as hell. And they are SMALLER than the MOAB.
MD is right, there are much better things the time and money could be spent on, but they dont. We have the strongest military with the most advanced technology in America, but god help you if you have cancer.

yeah, like proper kevlar vests and helmets for when the bad guys get a bunch of these guns.
lmao truth. :D

BlackHawk down was an eye opener for me, i had never realized that the helmets and vests soldier wear are great against shrapnel and pistols, but are basically tissue paper against rifles.
Some manufacturers have been trying to make bacteria that produce liquid spider webs, because spiderwebs are the most structurally perfect substance in nature, mixing the right amounts of flexibility and tensile strength. Spider webs turn kinetic energy into heat, and then immediately dispel it because it is a poor conductor.
one show i watched said that a housefly hitting a spider web is the equivelant of an f-16 hitting a 1 inch thick cable at mach 2, and that cable being able to absorb the impact and stop the airplane cold.
They are looking to make body armor out of the stuff. it would be like wearing a wool sweater that could stop 50 caliber rounds.

I enjoyed the SMAW launcher and the "Novel Explosive" rocket. The "dragon skin" looked promising as new body armor.

These "shanties" are often solid brick/block buildings with a few small windows that enemy snipers can fire out of taking out the guys who have no cover with ease.

Neat video. I see the comments about developing anti-pollution technology instead and I think we've heard similar stuff here but that's just so idealistic. We will always be attacked and there will always be war. That's how human beings are. It doesn't matter how clean the air is, people will always be out to kill each other.

Bricks?! We better come up with something that can drop 100 nuclear bombs a minute then.

No but we need to come up with something that can take out a sniper before he puts a bullet through the heads of five soldiers. You act as if we should never have a casualty.

and you don't think they already have stuff more than capable of taking out a brick building? They've only had apache helicopters since like viet nam... I'm just saying the money/research could be better spent elsewhere. The most important thing actually isn't blowing up brick buildings in iraq.

They do, but not in the same way. The SMAW drops the building and it can't be fortified again and reoccupied. Of course there are stronger weapons but sometimes you need more accuracy and less force. Hopefully it would cut back the civillian death toll.

I'm not a hippy, yeah we need to kill people war is hell people die blah blah blah I'm saying AGAIN that the money/research is mismanaged in the US. I don't think anyone in the world would argue about the money mismanagement thing, anyone with half a brain anyway. ;)

I say blow up everything and get the hell out...The war is over...Fast, cheap, effective...
What about the innocents?...They'll be tortured in one way or another by their own governements and its 'officers', clerics, and other citizens anyway (it isn't exactly the Land Of Oz over there)...That's the way they do things over there...At least the threat to US and the remaining survivors over there, would be gone...AND...We would have all pretty much forgotten about it by now
'Straight forward' enough?

This is what i told my roommate when we attacked Afganistan way back in 2001. If they want to insure this never happens again:
Fly over the ocuntry and hit it with every last drop of VX gas we have inour arsenal. Follow that with a nuclear bombing run, blasting every inch of the country.
Then, find anything remotely looking like an underground facilitiy and dump every bunker-buster we have on it. that way, every living thing in the country, going down about 100 feet, will be dead. end of problem forever.
The main problem with that is that we would then have every nation on earth (except isreal) condemning us, then attempting to wipe us of the planet ourselves.
i would nominate George to "take one for the team".

In 2006 Health and Human services received over 600 billion dollars while Department of Defense got over 500 billion (during a war). Meanwhile education boasts a number of just under 100 billion. Is it being mismanaged? Sure, we still give welfare too much. We need less in the DoD, more in education, and less people getting a free ride.

IMO the weapons we possess now are fine, we don't need mega doomsday machine guns like that and stuff. Its not the weapon, its how its used that wins the war. We don't even need the nukes, all we have to do is cry nuclear and we win the war...

Agreed... We can already destroy our own planet several times over. What does it say about us, as an intelligent race, that we're still plagued by disease, cancer and other malignants... but hey! We can destroy ourselves in the span of a couple of hours!
Same shit, smaller scale:
A forum divided.
Enemies declared.
Words spoken.
Feelings get hurt.
Action is taken.(mods ban)
But the forum lives on, just like the earth will. There will always be a voice of reason that keeps us alive.

Uh....Russia, who has nukes, won't, 'cause they still are gunnin' for that one chance and are allied with China who is allied with Afghanistan. So, China (has nukes), will let loose. 'Course, there's Europe, but after the US has just nuked an entire nation and made damn sure that everyone in that country was dead... (in another form of blitzkrieg), maybe Europe wouldn't be so keen. Then there's N. Korea, and they're be allowed to play in the "World Dominance Game." Hey...maybe Japan can come too, because, the new Most Powerful Nation in the World (formerly that wasteland known as North America- if China and Russia join up, and our allies tell us to fuck off because we're pulling shit like the above mentioned plan, we're hosed- are gonna need their help on a few things.
