I am watching a southpark episode where Kenny dies and goes to heaven, and it made me think:

Why does everyone reefere to the gates of heaven as "the Pearly gates", then depict them as being gold?

And why have a gate that doesnt even have a fence? Its just a gate. You could walk around the side. Its not like St Peter is Cerebus, he's not going to bite anything off.

And who worked the gate before st peter? Did people just walk in? if so, heaven must be filled with a bunch of saucy cave men...

Another thing, i have thought about this since i saw the movie Ghost. Patrick Swayze died in his thorties, so of course he is a brutally handsome ghost (dont you think?). Now, say, Demi Moore dies at 80. Does she go to heaven an old lady? or does she go as she looked back then?

Does she appear what Swayze thinks is ideal, or does she stay the way she did when she died? Maybe heaven makes him a "Copy" to make him happy, but what if he finds out its a copy, and she is actually old and dead, off messing around with her new husband (or wife, get with the times people)

Yes, this is the kind of crap that keeps me up sometimes.

I know the feeling.

Take Jehovah's Witnesses.....one of the main angels' names in their faith is "Moroni".
Didn't that give anybody a clue?

If a bear is shitting in the woods, and a tree falls on it, but there's nobody around to hear it, does it make a squishy noise?

i dont question these things any more than i do any other fairy tales :D

BLASPHEMER

GHOST was NOT a fairy tale....it was real.

you brought this on yourself

a song

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time,
Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much.
Are you still mine?
I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me.

Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Lonely rivers sigh, 'Wait for me, wait for me'
'I'll be coming home, wait for me!'

When the first Ku Klux Klan meeting happened, how many guys do you think showed up wearing flowered sheets?

1. His name was "Preston".

After that meeting, they stopped liking gay people too.

I ask myself
how come the sun is not spelled son
and son is not spelled sun

How come the word 'me' is prounounced me
but when you add a couple more letters in front the 'e' becomes silent.??
whats a silent letter anyway.
and why on earth do woodchucks chuck wood in the 1st place..
wouldn't it be easier just to carry them.?
Who said mother nature calls when you want to urinate..?
why don't you just say..em going to urinate'
and why is it called urinate..why not just say..em going to pee'.?
and why compare a pee when we already have peas..
so do you say pee soup or pea soup..

ahhhhh now em going to be awak all night with this.

i just say - I've got to go drain the potatos

Wouldnt that be a more appropriate masturbation reference?

i have always loved the observation that they are called "fingers" but they dont "fing".

If involuntary is the opposite of voluntary, and indestructable is the opposite of destructable, is the opposite of intelligent, telligent?

Why are most smart asses so dumb?

Why do people like rattan furniture? especially in shorts... its like sitting on a basket, or a bundle of sticks.

I too have contemplated rather odd things...Such as:

When the question came up about Zombies killing 75% of the population...

I was considering just how important human beings really are anyway...I mean think about it...How much would the world change if we (as individuals) were gone?...

As for myself:

Only 5 people in this entire world think they need me...and out of those 5, only 1 really does

I mean seriously...Consider how insignificant we really are...

Hmm

Heh...It's like we're all stoned or something

Well...They certainly stand up and stretch their neck out like they're GONNA say cock-a-doodle-doo...And they also have a tendency to wake people up

Hmm...maybe that's where the term came from ;)

Okay, here is something for newb to google. Why is it called "pot" and/or "reefer"?

And where does the term "stoned" come from?

if you lead a horse to water, but cant make it drink, what if you shove it into the water? if it drowns, did it technically drink?

Vodstok

true - the earth is much better off without people,

but i cant help thinking like the planet empty of nice peaceful decent folks,

would be as wasteful as a beautiful virgin with long sexy legs, big boobs, hourglass figure, bi-sexual, gymnyst, no inhibitions, .....

well, you get the point..

i hope .. cause i forgot what it was.

Not to get philosophical, but are you implying that beauty is meaningless without an observer?

Tough one [its a good thing the boss left early to go skiing]

''The Oxford English Dictionary s.v. POT n.5 says 'prob. f. Mexican
Sp._potiguaya_ marijuana leaves'. Many English language websites tell the
same story, some giving the supposed variant Spanish forms _potaguaya_ or
_potacion de guaya_.

''I have so far found no evidence that _potiguaya_, _potaguaya_ or
_potacion de guaya_ are in fact used in Spanish. I would be interested to
know of any evidence that any of these expressions is used in any variety
of Spanish. If any of them is used, I would also like to know the meaning.''

None of the replies has confirmed the use of any of these three variant
expressions in Spanish. Philip Durkin explains the source of the OED's
etymology:
David W. Maurer 'Argot of the Underworld Narcotic Addict' American Speech
11 (1936) 116-27: ''potiguaya, Marajuana (sic) leaves after the pods have
been removed; crude marajuana''.

Among the alternative ideas, Scott DeLancey suggests that ''_pot_ is
metonymic extension of _tea_, which is a widespread term for cannabis (in
the form of dried leaves)''. David Drewelow suggests other possible
metonymies from e.g. a pipe with a 'pot bowl', or marijuana as a 'potted
plant', or 'drug pots' for holding or drying drugs, and draws to my notice
that Nahuatl _poctli_ means 'smoke'.

So far, though, no documentary or circumstantial evidence points to a
choice between these various possibilities, or towards any of these in
preference to other conceivable or actual suggestions.

The mystery remains.

I maintain it does make a sound, sound is just waves of energy travelling through the air. it doesnt need an observer to exist.

is this not the weirdest thing ever? Most serious threads degrade into sex jokes and smart remarks after a page or two, and here we are with a perfectly meaningless and goofy thread, and we drag philosophy and encyclopedias into it.....

we are bass-ackward here.

Yes, this is the kind of crap that keeps me up sometimes.

The Gates of Heaven aren't (don't hold me to this) literal. There may be a gate like that, and a wall surrounding it, but i'm not so sure.

What I know for a fact is that when you go to heaven you are as a spirit. I'm not sure whether you even have your human form anymore. No one can say they know for sure, but I think you either appear as a young person ( either a child or a young adult) or you don't have a human form anymore, but just a
spirit.

However, I researched it, and most people agree that you will have a body, and probably be of a younger age, not sure what young means. I can explain other things about Heaven and hell if you want, just this is very blank in the Bible, just feel free to ask.

Going back to the original question...

According to Christian Theology:

Pearly Gates is an informal term for the gates of heaven based on this Bible verse:
Revelation 21:21— The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate being made from a single pearl.

Though either those gates are really tiny or those are giant pearls.
Moving on...

As for the gold thing, that may be due conceptions of wealth and riches during the middle ages when a lot of Christian religious paintings were done. Besides, gold is a lot easier to see than pearly gates on clouds?

Concerning Ghosts:

Typically, "ghost rules" are that whatever you look like when you die (age, clothing, sometimes condition the body is at death), that's what your ghost looks like. So if Demi Moore died at 80, Patrick Swayze would have to deal with her wrinkly body.

Oh, and no "copies" in heaven, it's a one soul per body deal.
