View Full Version : Does anyone else hate Asian horror?

Or is it just me? It seems to be pretty popular, but for me these movies are all horrible. I read so many rave reviews about "The Eye" and then I watched it expecting a good and scary movie and it was complete crap. I'd say the same for just about every other Asian horror movie I've seen. I think that some people just think that they should like it because it is foreign. It's like paying more for shitty imported beer simply because it's imported...

Again...It depends on what you're into...There are different types of Asian horror, just like there are different types of American horror...

The Eye is NOTHING like 3 Extremes, Audition or Vampire Hunters (which are also, nothing like each other)

You can't just say that you hate ALL Asian horror movies (unless you've seen them ALL), anymore than you can say you hate ALL American horror movies...Unless you just don't care for horror movies to begin with...You certainly can't watch just one or two of ANY type of movie and decide that you don't like any of them...

you are completely correct in your point. I guess I was being a bit too vague. Of course, I have been severely let down with ALL of the Asian horror that I've seen up until this point!

I watched The Eye, The Grudge, Kairo, Ringu, Dark Water and a few others. Essentially all of the really popular ones, all of which I hated.

No, I haven't liked any of them. Everyone has their own opinion though, and I respect that.

Oldboy was really good, but it wasn't horror.

I love asian cinema, particularly 1960's Yakuza flicks and most Samurai movies, but the horror tends to let me down - a lot of style over substance which is fine for a while, but can become really tiresome.

Audition was cringe worthy

Wild Zero, Batle Royale, Save the Green Planet and Versus are campy fun

Kwaidan is great

If I had to recommend a single asian fantasy film, it would have to be "A Chinese Ghost Story." Really interesting, fun, full of unexpected, imaginative things.

Avoid the sequels at all costs. They just don't exist.

Yes, there are sequels. They do exist, but I thought it would be easier for you to avoid them if I told you they didn't.

You should watch 3 Extremes and 3 Extremes 2...They aren't too bad...and they certainly aren't anything like the 'popular' ones...I thought the 'Box' segment was pretty boring, though

Some good short films in those sets.Yeah, I loved 'Dumplings', just because it's gross......But, my absolute FAVORITE (and it's damned funny, too), is the one where the guy breaks into the movie director's house, he has his wife tied to the piano, he tortures her, and he takes the director hostage, etcetera...I'm sure you know which one I mean...That one's awesome

Cut was great (I think that was the title). Did you watch the full length Dumplings? Amazing how Miike's was the most tame...

Amazing how Miike's was the most tame...It WAS called 'Cut', I had forgotten the name...And yes, I did watch the full-length version of Dumplings, but I don't think anything was really missing in the short version, they did an excellent job cutting it down without really changing it much...It was nice to see them both, though :)

I've seen maybe 5 Japanese horror movies. And I gotta say, I'm a fan of it. I did see one though that was a major snooze fest. Forgot what it was called. But it took place in a hospital & they weren't letting any new patients come in.

which ones did you see that you liked ? i LOVE asian horror mostly korean but japanese is up there :)

I've never seen korean. Well the Japanese ones I've caught were on cable. The first one I remember seeing was "the Eye" Unfortunately that's the only title that's coming to my mind. I remember seeing one where at the end, a girl is in extreme pain & this grown man comes out of her pussy as another guy watches in horror & disgust. And 1 was Infection which I didn't care for. And the 2 other ones had very simple 1 word titles that I can't for the life of me recall. I must search the movie chanels for some of these movies. Sidenote: I also enjoy watching the japanese credits.

I'm with master here. I'd say the vast majority of Asian horror sucks ass. I've seen Ju-on, Ringu, Ringu 2, One Missed Call, Audition, The Eye, Versus, Dark Water, etc... While The Eye was the best out of that bunch I'd still probably only give it a C grade. They all pretty much sucked.

My recommendation to you master is to look more at the Asian Action/Horror because that's where you'll find the cool films. Battle Royale is awesomely brutal! Same with Ichi the Killer. I HIGHLY recommend both of those and this is coming from someone who thinks the Asian ghost-type horror sucks every bit as much as you do. Watch out for Battle Royale 2 though. It pales in comparison to the original.

why why why remake a movie that come out too years ago? just bring it out here the way it is and be done with it :mad:It isn't so much 'remaking' it, as it is 'Americanizing' it...They're doing the same thing with Battle Royale...

Despare
01-25-2007, 01:56 PM
Well, Park said he doesn't mind seeing his or other movies remade as long as they add something and not just remake it using American actors and locations. Too bad that's what's most likely going to happen.

Sidenote: When I read the title dark Water, that made me think Open Water. That is the LAMEST movie ever.

I wasn't a very big fan of Oldboy. It was alright, but nothing great for me. An American remake of Battle Royale will, no doubt, be considerably tamer & that will take away alot of the impact the original had.
