MONUMENT, Colo. - A former high school basketball coach faces 39 charges for allegedly hitting male students in the groin, showing them pornography and pouring water on his players then driving them to games in the winter with the windows rolled down.

Gregory Lynn Burr, 28, face charges ranging from sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust to child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, according to court documents reviewed by The Gazette of Colorado Springs. One of the students claims to have had scrotal surgery because of Burr's alleged assault.

A student in documents said Burr would ask them, "What is the capital of Thailand?" When they would answer "Bangkok," he would hit them in the groin.

The incidents allegedly took place from September 2005 to March 2006 at The Monument Academy.

Burr's phone number in Colorado Springs was not listed. Burr attorney Phil Dubois told The Gazette Monday that the charges are unwarranted, adding, "Mr. Burr is not a sex offender or anything close to it."

Burr, who was arrested, posted $10,000 bail on Dec. 14, court records show.

Burr is no longer is employed at the charter school, which is part of the Lewis-Palmer School District 38, said Ted Belteau, the district's executive director of personnel and student services.

Burr's wife, Sharalee, was athletic director, coach of the girl's basketball team last season and a teacher at the school told the newspaper that she was fired.

In arrest records, some of the victims portrayed the incidents as Burr's misguided attempts at humor but said they kept quite for fear of getting kicked off the team. One student estimated some of the players were hit in the groin 30-40 times.

Another said the blows occurred at every practice, with the coach hitting them with his hand, basketballs and tennis balls.

I have to say this sounds entirely plausible to me. I had some high schools coaches that were rancid excuses for human beings.

My P.E. (Gym) teacher in school in england used to be in the army. Therefore the only sport we would ever do was Rugby, so basically you'd always come back bleeding with him saying things like "come on you pussies", well you can imagine how he might of been...

Anyway I would have been a smartass to him when he asked for the capital of* Thailand and answered with Krung Thep.

It hasnt been called Bangkok since 1782 when the King moved across the river and made a new capital city there. Stupid rest of the world.

Probably would have annoyed him more though :p

I always loved kids who did that, make the teacher look stupid (bad teachers, that is) with an unarguable fact. Its a great way to callout the ones that are just there to have power over someone (Like most gym coaches)

Yeah my teachers used to hate me for that sort of thing. I'd be talking with friends constantly in a class and the teacher would say "Michael what was I just saying??" and I'd spew out word for word what they said and they'd be like "right...well just stop talking please" or they'd ask me a question and I'd know the answer. I shouldnt of been talking, but it was still funny to do that back.

The look on their face was priceless but I actually got on with my teachers really well, they were all quite decent actually.

ex-jocks often become P.E teachers I guess.

Also, you'd think you'd stop answering to that capital of thailand question.

Didn't I see that "joke" on south park? I dunno...some shit like that.
To think a teacher (even phys ed.) would add it to their repertoir...that there's some sad shit. Of course, by the sound of it, if any of the students were to point this out or perhaps that his behaviour was abusive and innapropriate, they would only suffer some form of physical "education" as a result.
It's unfortunate that in many cases like this, it goes on far too long before anybody says anything about it, to anyone in a position that can or will do something about it. What's even more unfortunate is the amount of assholes in higher positions in schools that simply have too much faith in their staff to take this seriously until they either witness it or have something like 10+ people report incidents...it's like a face saving thing, and in my opinion, people like this share equal responsibility for any damage inflicted.
So many people in the education system are just sad, bitter people who take their authority on a complete power trip rather than try to become some kind've responsible, trustworthy influences in the lives of those that are at the stage they need it most. This is exactly the kind've shit that steered me away from the "school" system...well, that and I had a little trouble...but all I can say is, college options are infinately more suitable, and generally hire a better class of people to teach.
Guy should be fired, and have the shit kicked out of him by the parents.
That said, not all "school" teachers are like this...there are some GREAT teachers out there, ones that listen attentively, and are deadset against shit like this going on...but I honestly believe that these days they're few and far between.
