Yes. Yes, he was a damn fine actor.

I actually almost popped in The Unknown (1927) tonight.

Without him there wouldn't have been countless remakes of Phantom of the Opera. It's his performance that made the film one of the foundations of cinematic horror. If all he had ever done was that film and Hunchback he would still be a legend, but the fact that he left us DOZENS of masterful portrayals sets him at the top of the horror pantheon- the first ever horror film star.

It's amazing that such a great actor did his own makeup, too. Especially as it was such unique makeup. Nothing on earth looks like him in London After Midnight. The stills are so great, it makes me really miss the film.

I went with a friend to Universal Studios' Halloween Horror thing this past Halloween season and we saw a lot of ghouls--a lot of creatures in masks, including some prominent New Line characters that I didn't feel I needed to see, but i digress. There was one dude all decked out in London After Midnight garb, and he looked most convincing. My buddy and I both exclaimed, "London After Midnight! That's awesome!" and the guy said in an evil voice, "Ahhh! It's nice to meet people who know what they're talking about!"
