Saturday Morning Is Dead

When I was a kid I remember waking up early Saturday mornings and creeping downstairs to watch Saturday morning cartoons from start to finish over a bowl of cereal. It used to be the highlight of the week. Now, a father many times over, I can't help but feel a void where Saturday used to be. Not because there are no Saturday morning cartoons, but because they are no longer important. Now, it is possible for children to watch cartoons 24/7 and have a variety of cartoons to choose from (I think there are something like 20 all cartoon channels). Is it just me, or has 24 hour cartoons killed the joys of Saturday morning?

We used to go to the cinema on saturday mornings, the whole morning was devoted to kids stuff, theatre was full of kids and no adults. They'd have silly competitions and lots of serial shows, things like Flash Gordon, that weren't shown on tv, and the cartoons of course

By the time we came out it was lunch time, parents would be waiting outside to pick the kids up, it gave them somewhere to drop the kids while they went shopping

That's something else from childhood that's gone, no more saturday morning cinema :(

All kids seem to do these days is watch telly, play on the Playstation/X-Box/Nintendo or sit in front of the computer screen, which is fine on rainy days when you can't go outside and play, but not all the time, to the exclusion of everything else

Whatever happened to good old fashioned fun

You're right, there's nothing special about saturday mornings anymore

Having said that, today's society is very different from when we grew up, it's not safe for kids to be outside playing without an adult to watch over them these days, when we were kids we spent hours away from home, playing in the woods and by the canal, it just isn't safe for kids to do things like that now, which is a real shame because they miss out on so much pure, unadulterated fun

Like the original Land of the Lost. That was scary! All those dinosaurs runnin around

Everything is on home video now too. That's great, but gone are the thrills of waiting for a film to be broadcast on TV--you know, like through the air antenna TV--and waiting until one in the morning to watch it because that was the only time it was playing. A movie playing on TV used to be an EVENT back then, worthy of some excitement. Well, I guess we can be excited about finding that movie on Ebay now, huh? Ahhh...............

In a lot of ways, I really feel sorry for kids growing up today. I'm not even very old, and already the world has changed immensely from when I was a kid. The days when you could wander free all day long without an adult in sight are long gone. Kids these days have to have their playtime scheduled like a doctor's visit. It's depressing. We've done away with childhood.

I know whatcha mean I use to have a strick list that I had to follow every saturday of what I was gonna watch! Now my daughter just gets up and plays video games cause there's nothing on.

I know exactly what you mean here. You also have the shows that were canceled for no better reason than the grown-ups thought they taught Satanism to their children (i.e.- He-Man and Dungeons & Dragons. Man I miss those.

I get it. But this is all the kids know, they don't miss what they've never been a part of.

We usually go for a hike with the kids on Saturday mornings, just to have a ritual to follow.

Like stygianwitch, there was a time in my life when I went to the movies every Saturday. The 'rents didn't drive us though- we WALKED there. And for $1.25 we could see a double feature- many times it would be a great Hammer films program, or a couple of Corman productions, or even some cheesey AIP stuff. I really got a great education there! And there would be serials too, in between, and cartoons, and prize drawings too! I remember winning an original Ed Big Daddy Roth Weird-Ohs model kit once! Incredible times!

Prior to that it was the cartoons of course. Warner Brothers were what I was raised on, and I still pity later generations who had nothing that great. They also showed the great Popeye cartoons- not the King Features crap- the original Fleisher Brothers ones. Video didn't just kill the radio star...
