hey i saw the 'cockroach' episode from season 3 last night ..
i take it that it was supposed to be more of a comedic episode..
at one point a roach crawls past the screen ... the characters didnt notice it and then i realized that we - the viewers - were supposed to think that one just crawled across the TV screen ... kinda funny - kinda lame at the same time.
is there a fan history to this show ? (was it a big deal at the time ?)

I think it's called "War of the coprophages" right (War of the shiteaters, har har)
Yes it was a huge deal back in the day. i actually started watching the show right around that time period and the other people i worked with that watched it went apeshit over it.
honestly, i dont remember all the details of what they talked about, but i remember lots of conversations about were there alien roaches, Bambi was hot, blah blah.
I always got a kick out of it just because they really heavily played with preconcieved notions in that one.

If I may say so... That was one of my favorite episodes. I thought that one was a scream.

yeah - i'm seeing a pattern to the show .. they try to address a social issue as an underlying plot device (sexism, religious conviction, etc)
the roach episode seemed to be primarily a comedy - but it also addressed the posibility of coincidences being used to come to innapropriate conclusions ... and then they throw in a robot roach just to complicate things more.
i thought the roach running across the screen was pretty hoaky though ..
it gave me the feeling that by 1/2 way through season 3 they were feeling pretty big for their britches - enough to break the 4th wall ..

I remember when it first aired there were a couple of news reports about dumbshits who cracked their picture tube trying to smack the roaches.
A tv commercial followed that was even worse. it starts off as an ad for something innocuous and then a roach crawls across the screen, and then another and another and soon the screen is filled with bugs. A lot of busted sets over that one.:)

there is amuch later episode where i think they meet the lone gunmen for the first time (way pre-scully days), but was a late enough episode that mulder had a more compact cell phone in the regular ones. Anyway, Mulder gets a call at one point so he pull sout his cell phone, and it is oneo f those massive cell phone bricks they had in the late 80s that looked like a military radio from the korean war. I laughed my ass off the first time i saw it.

Mulder: Do you have any swamps around here?
Sherrif: We used ta, but then the gub'ment made us start callin' them hwetlends.

no - its the one where these preppy cheerleader girls have these powers because of when they were born and the convergence of the moon and planets ..
so they do what any cheerleaders would do and start killing people..
