View Full Version : Their, There and They're

I understand that people type quickly on this forum and quite often have a hard time keeping up with their (not there or thery're) thoughts, but come on...this is ridiculous. And this is not a spelling issure, it's agrammar issue.

So for the benefit of those consistent manglers of grammar...

Their - plurar possesive meaning "belonging to them"

There - a location, as in "Look OMCDave is destroying the written word over there"

They're - a contraction of "they" and "are"

Contrary to comon public usage around here, these words are not interchangable.

Thank you,
Conan the Grammarian

Either those who are consistent, or you could have used the word "consistently ".

Am I being a smart ass? Yes. I agree your complaint and am being an ass really for no reason other than that I am bored and waiting on hold for customer service.

Either way, I don't care. ;)

We're assuming the various spelling mistakes that still remain unedited in the first post are deliberate ironies?

They're's an idea.

What about those of us who try to keep grammatical mistakes to a minimum, and keep the spell checker or dictionary at ready use, don't we at least get a "Good work, all?" Some of us can be so anal at times that we sound like morons just to keep from ending our sentences with prepositions.

Now, I demand a little goddamned respect for that.

As for punctuation, however, I can't help you.

Well I'm sure the reason "they're" doing it is from pure ignorance. But on that other hand over "there", I'm not so sure. But it's "their" fault.:D

Do I get a cookie now?

Their's a lesson to be learned from all this.

This has exhausted me so I would like to continue this discussion on Their'sday.

And if Their'sday is not convenient, Two'sday or When'sday will be okay. Or Monkeyday. (ook ook!)

its funny how people love to say my name

I have a quite witty, yet mean remark to say to this, but instead, I'm just going to say;

I know of a mod on another board I frequent who has the rules about plural s and apostrophe s completely backwards- it's extremely annoying.

Rod, continue with your lessons- a lot could use a lesson on to/too and your/you're as well.

This is grade school level grammar....or as dave says, "grammer"....

aYes- interesting how many adults haven't grasped the concepts yet, isn't it?

Of course there is a price to pay for anyone blatantly correcting grammar, spelling and/or punctuation - the greenlight for close scrutiny of their own work on the message board.

Could Rod, Renob and neverending handle it, or will they say it's okay to carry on making mistakes after all?

NnnnnnnnGAHHH!! And how...how about the POSSESSIVE ITS. I see people using the contraction IT'S all the time here when the possessive ITS really needs to be used. I've been bent out of shape over that one for nearly 30 years now! When are you people gonna get it?

What does it take? What does it take to make people see??

Simple - just make a thread about it.

Go on.

Here's a good "girl's song" to grammar freaks:

Murder, He Says by, Jimmy McHugh and Frank Loesser (1942)
finally found a fella
almost completely divine
but his vocabulary
is killing this romance of mine

we get into an intimate situation
and then begins this character's conversation

he says, murder, he says
every time we kiss
he says, murder, he says
at a time like this
he says, murder, he says
is that the language of love?

he says, solid, he says
takes me in his arms
and says, solid, he says
meaning all my charms
he says, solid, he says
is that the language of love?

he says, chick chick
you torture me
zoom, are we livin?
i'm thinkin of leaving him flat

he says, dig dig the jumps
the old ticker is giving
he can talk plainer than that

he says, murder, he says
every time we kiss
he says, murder, he says
keep it up like this
he says, murder, he says
in that impossible tone

we'll bring on nobody's murder
but his own

he says, jackson, he says
and my name's marie
he says, jackson, he says
shoot the snoot for me
he says, jackson, he says
is that the language of love?

he says, mmmhmm
when he likes my hat
he says, tsk tsk tsk
what the heck is that?
he says, woo hoo! he says
is that the language of love?

he says hep hep with helium
now babe, we're cookin
another expression's too ill
he says, we're in the groove
and the groove is good lookin
sounds like his uppers don't fit!

he says, murder, he says
every time we kiss
he says, murder, he says
keep it up like this
in that, murder, he says
in that impossible tone

we'll bring on nobody's murder
but his own
