It's a great horror comedy that doesn't skimp on the horror or the comedy. Much like Hatchet (also releasing this January), this one is for the fans. It manages to poke fun at horror conventions while staying fully entrenched in the genre. Great fun and a director to watch.

i've been to a couple in Toronto and they're fairly low key .. thet are combined with sci-fi, amine, comics and gaming .. and horror gets the lowest % of the draw.

luckily for the guests most of them have sci-fi crossovers - otherwise precious few people would know who they are.

the trailer actually looked good, most horror movies slashed with comedy just dont work but this one seems like it could work....like if there was an invisble line between crap and good....it would be sitting on...it could go either way.

it has a bit of a blair witch project about it though...with the camera work and the whole news interview and stuff. it could also be said that it kind of takes the whole news interview from Scream, but uses the grungy bad camera work from BWP.

all in all it looks like a good movie and id deffinitely go and see it, just to see on which side the movie drops over that invisible line.

Thing is, the "comedy" aspect of BTM is extremely clever and witty, and it has absolutely nothing to do with easy jokes. ******* SMALL SPOILERS AHEAD:


It is the surreal aspect of making a documentary on a serial killer, interviewing him to see that he is a rather charming and ordinary looking fellow, seing how he prepares his grand coup and chooses his victims and hearing about his insight on the "business" that makes this movie funny and very special. Plus, I don't think I have ever seen a movie that is able to turn the tables as efficiently as this one. Leslie might be a witty fellow, but as soon as he puts on his mask and goes out for his big night, the movie becomes deadly serious just as a the best slasher flick from the 80's were.

I'm telling you all : this one's not to be missed. It won the best horror movie award at the Fantasia Festival last summer, finishing ahead of The Descent, and deserved it, even though The Descent is one of my favorite movies of these last few years. Behind the Mask is a cult movie in the making...

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, which premiered at SXSW ’06 and has gone on to become a film festival darling garnering several awards, critical acclaim and a devout internet following, will mark the largest theatrical release thus far for Anchor Bay Entertainment, a leader in the horror genre, which is now part of Starz Media. The film is slated to open in the U.S. on Jan. 5, 2007.

Directed and produced by Glosserman from a script that David J. Comedy is a part of life, and if you notice it isn't really funny to the characters in the movie, it's just a funny situation to people who are on the outside looking in. I'm sure if you were taped a real situation like that, the people who watched it would find some of the things you did pretty funny.

I am not sure what I think of this film. This is the first time I have heard of it. The idea sounds better than what the trailer looks. I will probably view it though.

It is very light on the gore and heavy on deconstructing horror themes. I found it clever as hell, brilliantly acted and directed by a true craftsman. There are little visual homages to several classic 80s slasher flicks without ever playing anything with a "wink, wink" kind of awareness.

I know this one will divide the forum. Some will surely HATE it. Another sign of a good flick:D



And later on this year we get the opposite end of the slasher spectrum in HATCHET! which is a perfect thematic book-end to BEHIND THE MASK. The directors are good friends and their films should totally be viewed back-to-back.
