Talking about some of the effects in recent non-low budget horror...
examples are Mortuary and MofH season #2 That Damned thing...
Since when did a very poorly animated version of the Tar Monster from Scooby-Doo become the standard in horror...
I know that on Sci-Fi we get that (I've come to the conclusion that Chili's and Bowflex must be the ones financially backing the Sci-Fi original productions) but come on...the claymation in the Evil Dead is cutting edge stuff compared to the end of Mortuary. My 14yo fell off the couch laughing towards the end of Mortuary...I remember seeing the blood spurt tube sticking out of a guys outfit in Zombie Lake...but man that was early 80's! How about the creature in Sabertooth....good grief. I just have a hard time...seeing a film with recognizable people both involved with and acting in the film...you have to wonder what they are thinking when looking at the final cut.

yeah, I've written a few SciFI Channel turds. It's pretty disheartening to write a scary monster into a script and see it rendered so horribly on the screen.

That has to be like having your kid grow up to become drugge dout porn star...

"NO! thats not what i meant at all...."

that thought scares the hell out of me. I have so many ideas and stories that i am in love with.. I know its going to hurt a lot in the beinning....

I love bad horror.....it makes life a little more fun. There are true gems of bad effects out there....like Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor. A giant garbage bag and claymation mutant frogs can brighten an otherwise dull day.:D

Bad horror is OK when its low budget, indie, or not known...just beginning people, etc...you kind of go in with the expectation that the effects will not amaze, but to see someone like say a David Keith in Sabertooth and then see the ridiculous image of the creature at the end...not even a good cartoon...Denise Crosby in Mortuary...or the end of That Damned Thing...or a Godzilla suit in 2005...ones like that just shock me.

Didn't mean to slam on your creations...does seem like Sci-Fi puts the least amount of effort into bringing the stars of the creature features(the creatures) to life out of all those in the industry though.

You couldn't slam them any harder than I have. I've sworn to never work for them again...and they've actually called a couple of times.

Hope I can keep holding out, but my resolve is failing.

And Urge,
I fucking wish Kraken looked half as good as that image:eek: But my contribution to that film was several drafts back and NOTHING like what ended up on screen - and I'm saddled with the "written by" credit.

Kind of like working for Corman or Troma, just not as cool.

Are you talking about cheap CGI, which has been a bane on horror - on cinema - for years, or hand-crafted effects?

I have love/hate issues with the Sci-Fi channel.
I remember being so excited when they first put this channel together (yes-I was 2:D )
So now even if they air really bad stuff, I have to be loyal because there is nothing out to compare to it to.
And a bad movie late at night is a GOOD thing. Trust me.

Both actually...also the effort that is put into the effects...if your doing the effects....how drunk do you have to be to say...well that ain't TOOOO bad...and call it a day was basically my point.

I'm quite a fan of obvious puppetry/latex work so long as they've put some effort in (witness the horror of the stop motion animation in Basket Case, however) - bad CGI though is a killer of films as soon as it rears its ugly, non-existent head.

I love stop-motion. How would Evil Dead be the same without that clay-caked finale?

Those wanting to see some REALLY poor-ass monster effects should check out this one I saw a trailer for called "Pinata: Survival Island", over the top splatter, ridiculous looking monsters...this is what you do after you've been in star trek, apparently.

i love old school movies. the cheese is good. however, now, its just.. ridiculous how cheesy and fake stuff is with all the technology. back then, there wasnt really options on what to do and now, they have so many things available and arent using them.
