Alright guys, I need some [somewhat] serious responses to this thread.

I got lucky last week, my teacher for Rhetorical Analysis of Media assigned us a project that most moaned and groaned about, but not I. The assignment was to post a thread on a forum board. I really lucked out, being that posting here is a regular ordeal for me anyway.

So I figured I'd start a topic on forums themselves. What do you think about them? Obviously everyone here likes them or, well, you wouldn't be here. But in what ways do you think that this forum is a positive thing to you as an individual?

P.S. I will be printing this page and turning it in for a grade, so please try to stick on topic, and no posts that I'll have to delete. Thanks guys!

highfive.

HAR HAR I think this place is positive for me, it's good for unwinding. I get a lot of good movie and music ideas here as well. There is some good discussion and even laughs now and then.

Ive said on may occaisions that I learn about twice as much on this forum than I learn in school, and I firmly believe it.

Though admittedly they are few and far between, the serious discussions that we can get into around here are incredibly stimulating. I rarely actually participate, but I always read through the serious threads here. Reading different views from people of every walk of life can really expand your perceptions...I can say for a fact that Ive given more thought to some the topics brought up here than I do for anything in school.

Also, it's made me a better typist and improved my grammar/spelling ALOT, simply through giving me a good reason to practice.

I come in here to post my thoughts on various matters, take part in a few conversations with (I suppose) individuals akin to peers, relatively speaking.
There's points of view flying around the place like bullets...some conflicting, some just different. I think it's interesting to hear about a persons individual perspective on various things...you can pick and choose who you talk to, and who you don't, it's like a huge room where you can butt in on any conversation you find remotely interesting to you.
Asking for help and/or advice, or just talking about "stuff" gets a varied result, again, when there's this many opinions/p.o.v's about, you're garaunteed to find something (even if you have to pick it out amidst the nonsensical rubbish)personally useful to you.
The forum is a good information source too, a place where people gather and post information about upcoming and already released movies, games, books, tv, comics...along with their personal insight. You come to realise that there's a few people up in here with similar tastes, and their references often lead you to watching/seeing/playing something you really like, something you may not have otherwise noticed or come across yourself.
The "horror" side of things...for the horror fan, it's great...the core of this place is horror, the movies, comics, games...etc we speak of...primarily comes back to horror. Again, for reference purposes, I think that's great. If you're stuck for something to do/watch/read, you're more than covered here in terms of suggestions.
Throw in a healthy argumentative outlet here and there, some humorous jokes and stories that make you cringe, and that's just about this place in a nutshell...as I see it anyhows.

I think it's definitely been a positive thing. I get to "talk" to people from all over the world, amuse or piss them off and be able to read their different opinions, not just about horror, but about anything that someone brings up. Me like. :)

Examples plz.

Too bad you don't get a grade for this, because forum posting doesn't really go very far in determining wether you're to become a dishwasher or a doctor.

I came here for help on an art project 2 years ago. Somebody called me a fucktard and someone else said I looked like a gorilla, but I did get help eventually. I guess I still hang around because it's a good way to stay up to speed on what you crazy young people talk about these days on this new fangled interweb.

I'll ask again....

Who the F uses the word "doggone?"
I guess I could ask the same about people who's user names are "boner" backwards. If you could stay out of this thread I'd appreciate it. No sexual predators allowed.

Ok. I won't post here anymore after this, but that last sentence is offensive and harrassing. It is also totally uncalled for. How do you justify saying something so "doggone" ridiculous?

the forum can be useful at times...
I quite often get out of it what i initially came for - information and insight on movies i dont know - plus a chance to chat about the ones i do know.

when i joined i was working at a place where i was basically getting paid to sit on my butt and do nothing so i posted a lot on everything (i have varied interests - movies music books - so it kept me busy.)

unfortunately and/or fortunately - an online forum is pretty much a reflection of the society that uses it - only there is an unusually high concentration of abhorrent behavior on a forum - (especially a horror forum) because of the nature of posting - faceless and remote from the other posters - and nature type of folks that horror movies can attract.

This often brings out the negative more than the positive of the posters - feeling that in the online society you really have no accountability for your actions or words. you cant be touched - you cant see the expression on the faces of the people you are offending.

You will see behavior here that is accepted that would be deemed sociopathic in real life.

There are always positives with the negatives .. I've made some friends and interract with some folks that would be the kinds of people i would interract with in person had i met them at work, etc ..instead of a foum.

I do not consider this place a home away from home .. the people here are not my family and never will be. I dont understand the folks that proclaim it to be for themselves - but thats their business.

if not for those few individuals i really enjoy chatting with (and trading flicks with) i think this place would present a far more negative expirience that i would be willing to participate in.

i treat people online the same way i would in life .. absolutely no different at all.

i believe with all my heart that that isnt the same with the majority of people that post in this or any other forum... at least from what i've seen - i hope not.

Forums can be a grand thing if you can find one you like. This is only the second one I've been on that I've stuck around for long periods of time, the other being The Straight Dope (I quite because they went subscription.)

First, I'm obviously here because I love horror. I like to learn about it, talk about it and help other people out when I can. You can actually get decent opinions and conversations going on here. Inevitably, 90% of the threads will degenerate into off-topic sexual innuendo, but you can usually manage to get some good thoughts before it does.

When you've finished this study, can you get back to me, and tell me why I'm here?

The Flayed One

Have you checked down south? We've actually got a few good discussions going on, and about movies, no less!

One of the great things about forums is you can take the time to focus your thoughts and write well considered opinions. You have no such luxury in real life, as stuttering over your words or taking time to think about your answer becomes awkward in face to face conversation.

*edit* And, you can go back and correct embarrassing spelling errors if you have a habit of posting before you finish your coffee.

Conversation and self-promotion are why i am here. Oh yeah, i also like picking on those not gifted with my powers of sarcasm, which is most people :D

I'm here because my wife thinks it's lame and I live to make her squirm:)

I also stay at home with kids, so adult (which is hit and miss here) contact is something I crave.

You should wear a special outfit while you're in judging mode. Maybe only speak in rhyme or aliterate a lot. That'll learn her!:p

I've met people on here that I can turn to when I have major problems in my life when I can't turn to others for help.
