I've still got all my vhs tapes, doubt I'll ever get rid of them and they're probably worthless anyway. I think vhs has well and truely had it's day now, as the format is so basic compared to dvd and now that the new formats are here/on the way. The format's not even comparable to laser disc, which is as old as the hills too. It's purely for tradition & nostalgia for film collectors as regular film buyers just want the latest technology.

My video player broke a few years ago, load mechanism spring snapped. I've never bothered getting it fixed as my vhs collection is pretty much redundant. I've got some right shit films in my vhs collection, which I wont want to watch again. The better ones or ones that I want to watch again have been replaced with dvd.

None of the shops I buy from stock vhs anymore, I'd have to visit a second hand place or find a video rental shop with a bargain bin to rummage through to get vhs now.

laserdisc is done now .. but if you have an elite player ... the picture quality is better than DVD..

(waaaaaaayyyy less compression - same technology)

laser disc may be done now, but a couple of films ( I may be wrong, the new Dust Devil) recenty got the special edition treatment, and they used the laser disc masters to produce the dvds.... so there's still some valuable use for laser disc.

having colected tapes for longer than most of you have been born (no one even mentioned Beta:eek: ) I can say that the tapes wont last forever.
I've always kept mine in ideal conditions (rewound, out of the light, cool and dry) but still the older ones are beginning to deteriorate .. especially at either end of the spool.

I'm going to archive the rare ones onto DVD

I'm a VHS collector. I love them, there are movies on VHS that just aren't available on DVD, and it's fun to pick through them. Right now I have around three hundred or more VHS, and around two hundred DVD's. I have a lot of collector's stuff, like Saturday the 14th and Howard the Duck. I am still coveting The Keep, which I bought only to discover it didn't play, and The Monster Squad, because that didn't play either.

They E-Boogey.Hmm, that's odd...I've been using it for 3 years, and I haven't had any problems *knocks on wood*...I've found tons of movies for less than $5 (and that's INCLUDING shipping and handling)...But, I ALWAYS check all feedback, and read any negative comments to sellers...I don't buy anything from anyone with less than 99% positive feedback...Maybe that's how I've avoided problems...

But...Right now I can't find Bette Davis's 'The Nanny' for less than $22...*sigh*

The good thing about eBay is, if you don't find what you're looking for today, it might be there tomorrow...So, I just keep looking :)

I dont know what an upconvert DVD player is - but the Elite series is still very sought after and valuable because of its quality..
the best DVD players may very well be better now but not many people are dumping their Pioneer elite machines for less than $800.

They used to be worth over $1200 just a year ago.

Interesting, I'd like to see them both side by side. Upconverts can be very good getting almost HD DVD quality visuals. I think my laserdisc player was a Pioneer or a Panasonic...
The only thing I didn't like about laserdisc was the switching of discs mid-movie, really took me out of some flicks.

I've bought tons of stuff off of ebay and have only had one problem and that was getting a burnt dvd copy when the seller advertised it as "official release still in shrink wrap" and after threatning to leave him negative feedback he refunded my money...

Other than that I've had nothing but excellent transactions from ebay...

I ALWAYS check all feedback, and read any negative comments to sellers...I don't buy anything from anyone with less than 99% positive feedback...Maybe that's how I've avoided problems...

It's strange to say this, but when I watch a laserdisc, it gives me a nostalgic feeling...I get all dreamy and think about the mid-90's when I was a big laser-nut. I used to love going to the laserdisc rental stores and checking out the many rental discs that were, even at that time, quite old! There is something so geeky about these things.

I WANT THAT HILLBILLY JOHN LASERDISC, NOW! GIVE IT HERE, DO YOU HEAR MWE?

I have so many nifty weird movies on VHS, getting back to VHS. Creature from Black Lake, The Day IT Came To Earth, Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Return of the Living Dead Pt 2 (original version), lots of neat stuff, and I like popping a tape in. It relaxes me.

I am not so much for one technology over another; I am more in support of everything. I mean, I still have cassette tapes and cassette decks. I love cassette tapes. If I could have an 8-track player and a collection of 8-track tapes, I would be so into that. I like the old and the new sort of mixed together. I put it all in a blender with some ice and I just let it happen, baby.

quirks! that is a good way to describe it. I have some old tapes, and the image quality, the film-to-video transfer itself, is murky, poor...and there are these weird hums and hisses...but when I watch these things, I get a strange kick out of them because they're literally old, they are some ex-rental thing someone bought for fifty cents and sold to me for three dollars.

I guess for me it's a retro thing in some ways

me, would probably be for 'Braindead' I managed to find it in HMV on Oxford Street, about 11 ~ 12 years ago cost me around £35. It came in this extra big case with great artwork. It was an exclusive to hmv at the time.

Heh heh...I spent $35 on a "Godzilla vs the Sea Monster" VHS tape once, from a store that used to mark up stuff they knew was rare. They had some resident geek working for them that knew about obscure movies--I never saw this person, but this person was there, certainly, because everything rare would ALWAYS be marked way way up so the store could screw you for what it had coming to it. "This cheesy tape is rare, and some poor fool will pay $35 for this if he has to..."

Aw, heck, it was worth it, though. Fun movie.

the trouble with that sort of length, the tape starts to get too thin, LP recorders get round that by turning 4hrs into 8hrs recording time. I remember snapping loads of audio casette tapes because I used to buy the longest ones to get more music on them... bit of a cheapskate then. Trouble was my hi-fi tape player stretched the tape to easily.
