Since there's so much talk going on about remakes and the general feeling is that they suck, I was thinking: are there any movies that you feel would actually be worth remaking? Which ones?

Personally I wouldn't mind watching Salem's Lot be remade... I saw both versions (don't know if there are more) and they were pitifull! And I think the book is great and had potential to become a good movie (or mini series, since the story is kinda big).

PS: Don't know if anyone had posted something like this before, the Search option isn't working.

Yes.. but sometimes the stories have been told in a pathetic way.. maybe in those cases they're worth being told again.

I didn't have any information on it before watching the movie so I can't tell what was wrong (apart from that general this-is-too-hollywoodish feel). What do you think should be changed?

Bingo! That's always been my thought. Been waiting for a remake of this for years and years, and we finally see one, but not the original story. Still, I enjoyed the new film.

My thoughts on remakes is that they should take all the effort and funding and invest it into a new story. I've enjoyed lots of remakes (the dead remakes and TCM were all good) but I'd still rather see new and original ideas.

There are only a few horror films that in my opinion deserve a remake:

Black Christmas(coming soon to theatres)

The Burning(seen by very few. similar to friday the 13th)

The Boogens(pretty scary for its time, but the 'boogens' were lame. could be done better)

I do not have a problem with movies being remade. My problem is with the selection of which movies are getting remade. Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Night, Dawn, Day of the Dead? Psycho? These are already perfect films to begin with. A remake's purpose should be to improve a film's legacy, not tarnish it.

So basically, I agree with everything being said in this thread. Movies like Death Race 2000 and Black Christmas that had good elements but could have been done better.... Those are the types of films that should be getting remakes. Not something that's already a classic because there is absolutely zero chance of them ever being better than the original. If one were to remake House of the Dead or some other shit movie, one would have very little chance of not being lightyears better than original and thereby improving the legacy.

i'm assuming you havent read the book by HG Wells..

the story took place at the turn of the century (1900) england.
it would make a brilliant period piece.

an emotional and thrilling centerpiece of the book was a battle between the tripods and an old battle ship - fending off the tripods until a passenger liner could escape ...

it never needed to be moved to america and modernized ...
(let alone the george pal religious propoganda bersion)

I want to see a british film with unknown actors that takes place in the proper time period - with the kind of budget that would do it justice.

Wow, Spielberg really turned it up side down then. I guess when we read a book and then see the movie we tend to get disappointed. The one time that didn't happen to me (that I can remember) was with Lord of the Flies. I enjoyed both book and movie.

One of my all-time favourite actors, but this is one rare case where I dont think re-casting him would be much of a problem.

NONE!! No more remakes or sequels. Of course, that'll never happen but I wish the movie industry would use it's imagination more and make original movies. There are plenty of horror stories from past to present that would make great cinema. But these days, it's all about name brand recognition. Obviously, if you remake a movie called "Halloween" or "Alien", more people will go to see it based on the name alone than an unknown title like "Revelations" (great Clive Barker story).

Yes, I totally agree, although some versions were so pathetic that I think deserved a remake, to try and honour the story behind the movie. But yes, in general, I agree that remakes SUCK. Besides, they're only remaking big, successful movies, like you said, instead of trying to improve those who didn't work out. :(

$$$$ comes from you, me, and everyone else.

actually it comes from kids who are the vast majority of the movie goers.
you want to blame someone - blame the kids.

i'm sure everyone here is familiar with the concept of supply and demand ?

I've always wanted to see a dark fantasy/horror version of The Wizard of Oz done. There are already plenty of elements that are borderline creepy in the original. I think the movie would lend itself to the genre nicely.

not so much of a remake - but a continuation of the series ... i'd like to see some more Sinbad the sailor movies.

the stop motion photography in the past films was charming - but i'd like to see what they could do with todays technology.

also i'd like to see all the Bond films remade with the new guy - following the book more closely.
of course that would mean 1 film a year for the next 20 years .. dont think its gonna happen :)

The movie studios only seem interested in remaking movies that were very popular or are considered cult classics. Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind that shouldn't be remade. I'd like to see remakes limited to movies with great ideas but poor execution. Can't think of any right now that haven't already been suggested here.

Eveytime this question is brought up I say the same two movies: Pet Sematary and The Longoliers. Two stories which scared me so much in print, then disappointed me on film. I would give anything to cast them.

From Ain't It Cool News - SciFi's "Oz" Miniseries

The miniseries is a sometimes psychedelic, often twisted and always bizarre take on The Wizard of Oz.
