I wouldn't call it horror. Definatley a exploitation flick. I loved the ending cause it set the stage for Christ II: Holy Devistation.

Definatley fucked up and gory.... doubt the studios would back a horror flick doing the same shit budget/distro-wise.

surely with all the hype and recent popularity in torture movies this has to be a horror. not only that but the daddy of the torture movie sub-genre. its very realistic and, depending on your personal beliefs, a re-enactment. i always prefer horror movies that stem from actual events

Doesn't really depend on your beliefs, at least most of it. Whether or not he is your savior is your belief but regardless of your feelings on religion a man was beaten, tortured, and killed.

I wouldn't call it horror. But then, I don't count torture films as horror either.

I find the film hugely overrated. The only part of the film I found good was the end when

** SPOILER **
Mary looks directly at the camera. Her look speaks volumes and actually hushed the audience in the cinema.

I then found that the shot was practically lifted as-is from Ingmar Bergmans 'Summer with Monika'.

Christian belief or not, I think everyone should see the film to see what one man was put through for what he believed in...and that was common practice back then...it's def a disturbing film...I didn't like the sub titles, but got used to them...people were crying in the theater when I saw it with my grandfather...he didn't like it all.

oops! somebody missed the point. didn't think it would take a genius to work out how the passion would cross over. oh well, at least i stimulated interesting opinions from some people.

It had some great gore, I'll give it that. I have a hard time with people telling me I need to see it because that's what really happened. They take their young children to see this. Great. Let them watch Caligula, too. That's how it really happened:rolleyes:

Rather than get into a debate, I'll offer a few points. I thought the FX were amazing. Definately a beautiful movie to look at. I really don't think it was a good movie, though. It's definately for a niche crowd. If it's not an exploitation flick, I don't know what is.

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

This one?

i think so .. i loved that guy .. all jealous because brian was going to get crucified .. and was spat on :)

Prisoners: Oah! Ouhoh!
Brian: Aie!
Jailor I: Hehehe!
Brian: Auh!
Jailor I: Huhuhe!
Prisoner: You lucky bastard!
Brian: Who's that?
Prisoner: You lucky, lucky bastard!
Brian: What?
Prisoner: Probably the little jailies' pet, aren't we?
Brian: What do you mean?
Prisoner: You must have slipt him a few shekels, eh?
Brian: Slipt him a few shekels? You saw him spit in my face!
Prisoner: Oh, ohoh, what wouldn't I give to be spat at in the face? I sometimes hang awake at night, dreaming of being spat at
in the face.
Brian: Well, it's not exactly friendly, is it? They had me in manacles!
Prisoner: Manacles! Ohuuhoh...what idea of reaving; is to be allowed to put in manacles, just for a few hours. They must
think a sun shines out your arse, sonny!
Brian: Oh, lay off me, I've had a hard time!
Prisoner: You've had a hard time!? I've been here five years, they only hung me the right way up yesterday! So don't you
come 'round...
Brian: All right, all right!
Prisoner: They must think you're lord God Almighty.
Brian: What will they do to me?
Prisoner: Oh, you'll probably get away with crucifixion.
Brian: Crucifixion?!
Prisoner: Yeah. First offense.
Brian: Get away with crucifixion?! It's...
Prisoner: Best thing the Romans ever did for us.
Brian: What?
Prisoner: Oh, yeah. If we didn't have crucifixion, this country'd be in a right bloody mess.
Brian: Guard!
Prisoner: Nail 'em up I say!
Brian: Guard!
Prisoner: Nail some sense into 'em!
Jailor I: Hahrkhm...what do you want?
Brian: I want you to move me to another cell.
Jailor I: Hah! Ptui! [Spit]
Brian: Aehw!
Prisoner: Oh! Look at that! Bloody favouritism!
Jailor I: Shut up, you!
Prisoner: Sorry!
Jailor I: Huah! Huhuhu...
Prisoner: Now take my case. They hang me up here five years ago. Every night they take me down for twenty minutes, then
they hang me up again. Which I guard as very fair, in view of what I've done. And if nothing else, it has taught me to respect
the Romans, and it has taught me that you'll never get anywhere in this life, unless you are prepared to do a fair day's work
for a fair day's...
Brian: Oh, shut up!
Jailor I: Here.
Centurion: Pilate wants to see you!
Brian: Me?
Centurion: Come on!
Brian: Pilate? What does he want to see me for?
Centurion: I think he wants to know which way you want to be crucified.
Prisoner: Oh, hahahaha, haha! Nice one, centurion! Like it, like it.
Centurion: Shut up!
Prisoner: Right, right. Terrific race, the Romans! Terrific.

I was really surprised by this movie, especially the flaying scene. Plus Satan was very creepy, and the moments with him sure felt like they belonged to a horror movie.

I don't want to debate it but what do you mean here? It all (for the most part) happened. A man who people called Jesus was beaten and crucified. If nothing else it depicts a crucifixion (the word excruciating was invented to describe the pain) of the most violent. Now, believing that he was a savior is your business but the physical depiction was done very well.

It's not that I don't believe that there was a man named Jesus (or Joshua bar Joseph, if you will) that lived. Nor do I have a problem believing that he was crucified. The Roman historian Tacitus states as much, and so does a Jewsih historian or two (although I believe that they say he was the bastard son of a Roman soldier named Panther).

I just have a problem with people telling me I NEED to see this movie, and so do their small children, because that's the way it really happened. Scourging, being made to drag the cross, and whatever else that isn't historically referenced by any other place than the bible, well, it's not my place to say it's fiction. I'm just saying that the idea of telling people to watch it simply because "That's the way it really happened" irritates me. Especially when they're forcing their young children to watch it. That's the reason I put in the Caligula reference. That may or may not have been how it really happened, but woul you suggest to everyone that they need to watch it just because of that reason? I don't think hardcore scenes of Roman sex orgies need to be viewed by everyone because they're historically accurate.

Just my view of the subject matter.

I misread your post in the first place, I thought you were saying it was fiction because instead of Calligula (which I disliked almost from beginning to end) I read Caligary which I thought referred The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which was to say that Passion was %100 fictitious. Carry on. ;)

if you have christian beliefs you should definitely see it amongst others eg. the ten commandments. also, if you are a horror fan it is pretty horrific. one of the few movies where i've just thought 'give us 5 minutes break' in relation to the nastiness. judging by peoples reactions it shows that 2000 odd years haven't made this subject any less controversial, even on a horror site. which is pretty much as far away from religious as you can get. i'll just say this; i'm a hockey fan and i love slapshot, but if i wasn't i'd still watch it for its comedy value. anyway, any film that features satan and gratuitous violence is horror. period! now how about a group hug?

Serious questions have been raised about whether it did in fact happen. There is too much evidence to simply take the myth at face value. See http://home.ca.inter.net/~oblio/home.htm

i'll tell you one thing that is fictitious; the amount of punishment he withstands is way more than humanly possible.
