Neo-realism..... meets exploitation and gore. Some truely powerful films have spewed out of these ingredients.

Cinema that moves you without distracting you to much from the feeling of reality.

Bad Boy Bubby and the Idiots are my two favorite examples of this...
you know? The flicks that make you angry, laugh and cry all in one sitting. Experiences.

It isn't gory, but this is the way I felt with Last House on the Left. It's so gritty and real that every emotion a character feels in the movie you feel. And strongly.

You've got it dude. Grit/Gore is a fine line.

You seen River's Edge or Bad Lieutenant?

"Well a little bit of cheese well you put in on trap if you don't catch a mouse then you're bound to catch a rat..."

Funny Games could fall into this category. Although the self-aware nods to the camera ease the grit and reality to a paletable level.

i found that this is the stuff i've moved away from as i've gotten older...

i still like the 'cartoon crazy stuff but nothing that just shows people suffering - in a realistic way with realistic villians.

ex.

i loved The Story of Ricky because it was crazy-cartoonish-nuts

i hated devils rejects because it was too realistic and uncomfortable.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

It wasn't gory but it was so funny, sad, exciting, and just... powerful. It may not seem "gritty" but I can think of at least two instances where I wanted to reach into the set and strangle you know who.
