A former grade school employee is accused of possessing images of children
A former Troutdale Elementary School counselor was formally arraigned on child pornography charges in federal court Wednesday.
William A. Knudsen, 64, of Gresham, pleaded not guilty to one count of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography. His trial was set for Dec. 12.
Knudsen waived indictment and waived the right to have his case heard by a grand jury. In informational documents filed in Judge Paul Papak's courtroom, it was alleged that Knudsen received and possessed child pornography for at least the past five years.
When he was arrested on July 6, Knudsen told investigators he had more than 10,000 pornographic images in his home. They found eight three-ring binders of images in his bedroom, 97 videotapes and nearly 500 discs, including, according to court documents, "numerous images and videos depicting prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct."
Police also seized 43 other three-ring binders, 520 videotapes and 462 discs from Knudsen's garage, including some homemade footage, a spokeswoman said.
Investigators visited Knudsen at his home in the 19600 block of Northeast Multnomah Street, where he admitted to downloading illicit images, according to the affidavit. He said his source for the images was "mostly Russian" pay sites and Internet groups.
Knudsen, who was hired by the Reynolds School District in 1990, resigned his position as counselor shortly after his arrest. He remains in the Justice Center jail without bail.
If convicted, Knudsen faces a minimum of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 on each charge, federal investigators said.
Authorities received a tip from the owner of a Gresham computer repair company who found images on Knudsen's computer while he was performing maintenance on it, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court
