There are not very many films that scare the crap out of me anymore, but for some reason, I can almost always count on Asian horror to do so. I am not sure why this is, but my guess is that it has something to do with the films being less predictable for me than most American flicks. In every case where I've seen a Japanese original and an American remake, I far prefer the Japanese version and find it much scarier.
I watched A Tale of Two Sisters alone in the dark last night, and it was great. I think it helped that it was stormy outside and I could hear trees banging on the windows.

they simply got it....the creep factor that you cant shake off.....i love asian horror and try and make my kid sister watch them.....telling her that is part of her culture (she's half asian....lucky sod!)

The huge difference is the religious factor. Most of our horror films (aside from a few exclusive oldies and newer ones) are based around heaven/hell jesus/god/the devil or an overall christian moral. Japan and most other asian cultures do not have the same religion and most of their stuff is based more around folk lore that we are simply not used to.
Do you think that Samara would be so freaky had we seen her most of our lives? or heard stories of her? Probably not.

I remeber watching the ring for the first time, i was so engrossed in it and there was this tense scene and my house phone went off... that scared the bejeezus out of me!

So far, The Ring is the only Asian horror I've seen that didn't do anything for me. All the others I've seen were scary and stayed with me for a few days.

I agree.
Also they seem to have more of a nack for suspence, where U.S. horror seems to be more up front and in you face. I like both at times, but the asian horror films have more of a lasting effect.
