View Full Version : Frank Millers 300

Not so much horror, but....

Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite.

Check out the 300 Spartans trailer, there's plenty of shouting but it does look great. :)

ORGASMIC!!!

I just viewed the trailer, I heard about it, but not enough to tell me what it was actually about. When i was reading the blurb for it I was surprised i could actually red all the names right (thanks to five years of serious Ancient History study, i can know speak goble-dee-gook).

The music did it for me, I loved the soundtrack to the Trailer, it was awesome and made the movie feel so...i have no words to describe it. But i'm deffinitely going to see this one!

Its been in various stages of production since the 80's...at one point Robin Williams was cast as Rorschach:eek:

So far on this production however, the only detail that I know of is that Zack Snyder is currently attached to direct. As far as Im aware they havent released any other details.

Just done a bit of reading up on this Watchmen project, and it sounds quite exciting. I'll definitely have to keep a close eye on this one.

Apparently a bit rests on the success of 300 - re casting and budget. So we should all go and see 300 if only to do our bit for Watchmen - but hey, it looks fantastic anyway.

Very cool.

I've always been a HUGE fan of the darker side of comic books (Sin City, 300, Preacher, etc...) so once Spiderman & X-Men did huge numbers at the box office, I started crossing my fingers that eventually some of my faves would find their way to the big screen as well. Sin City was obviously huge & in my opinion THE most perfect comic adaptation we've seen thus far. 300 looks like it could rival that. Frank Miller is the man. I hear they're gearing up for Sin City 2 as well which will cover everything they skipped in the first film. I can't wait!

And Preacher... Don't even get me started on Preacher. This is far and away THE BEST comic series I've ever read, but it's way too deep & complicated for a 2 hour movie, so I was delighted to hear they are gonna be doing this one the way they oughtta as well... As an HBO series. Perfect. They can make it as graphic as the comic books and each episode will equate to one issue of the story. That is pretty much the best case scenario for me as to how they could do this because initially I had heard it was heading to the big screen & that gave me pause. Now I'm fuckin' stoked.

I just saw this this past weekend and it was incredible! Just breathtaking, I highly recommend it.

Definitely rated R for a reason though, there was lots of violence and nudity, but I never seen so many 10 year olds. It was bizarre, it was like the audience of Bambi or something. This movie is definitely not for kids.

Fun film, not great, but entertaining as hell.

I took my kids and they loved it. The violence is so over the top as to be cartoonish. Specifically, blood is always flying, but never landing, no one really gets very bloody.
And the nudity... what's wrong with nudity? My kids don't bat an eye at it because they aren't being taught that the nude = bad.

I have no problem whatsoever with nudity. I honestly didn't even know that nipples could get that hard. But it wasn't a "naked people because it's natural" scene, it was a "erotic naked sex" scene, which I think should be reserved to people who at least have hit puberty, not children.

I personally, just don't think it's appropriate to bring a young child to a theater to see a rated R movie, ever. It honestly makes me uncomfortable to be watching a movie with "adult themes" next to a five year old.

For example, when I went to go see the Descent, there was a child who was about 7 or 8 sitting next to me. This child became so frightened as the movie progressed, that he was in tears, whimpering, and trying to crawl into his mother's lap. She finally let him crawl into a ball in her lap after she told him to "shut up" several times and that he was "acting like a baby".

If people want to let a child watch a rated R film, that's fine, it's their child. I just wish they would only do it at home, not in public where it effects other people.

I absolutely loved this movie! Before I saw it I could never clearly answer anyone or anyone's post that asked what my favourite movie was. Now I can! This movie just gripped me from the start to the finish.

I loved the camera work, espeically the battle scenes. I just really enjoyed how they would keep the camera speed normal while King Leanidos would prepare to strike and when he finally did land his sword upon someone or through someone they would slow the camera right down. That was just a very powerful effect for me.

The score was awesome as well, the music just brought it all together.

All in all this movie ROCKED!!!

And I dont really think it would have been as powerful if it didn't have the nudity and the R rated qualities it did. I was just kind of little upset that a parent would bring their 10 year old child to the movie. It was R rated and I just dont believe in placing a child in that atmosphere...not that young anyway.

But still a great movie!

I would feel embrassed for kids that age seeing 300. More so kids in their early teens because their parents would've brought them and they would be seeing sex scenes with their parents present.

As far as I see it though, I agree with Roderick, as long as a child is raised knowing sex is natural and okay it's fine for them to see it.

LadyFrost
03-21-2007, 04:53 AM
I also agree with Rob about raising your kids not to think nudity or sex is bad, but I just don't think that you need to publicly expose your children to that kind of thing when their 10 years old. I mean there is a place and a time and it does not envolve a big screen and pop corn.

I dont know why I just didn't think it was very parentally wise to take you child to a movie that is rated R when you don't know the content. We went and saw it opening night so no one had seen it.

Fair enough but if you have a good enough rapport with your kids it should be no problem because you can just talk about it after.

This has just turned from horror to parenting discussion.

So what did you think of the overuse of greenscreen techniques? Sure it looked nice but it just bugged me, knowing there were only 5 sets used and the rest was edited in. I guess that's my fault for watching a special on the movie before seeing it.

Mictlantechutli
03-21-2007, 06:57 AM
I like the use of greenscreen. All those critics who said it looked like a video game got it wrong. It doesn't look or feel anything like a video game - it feels like a living comic book.

I might go see it again this weekend.

LadyFrost
03-21-2007, 06:58 AM
Yea I'd leave the special features and interveiws and stuff for after the movie. To me I thought it was really good and actually I didn't really take much notice of all the special effects and green screens. It didn't faze me at all I was too engrossed in the story the camera work ... but thats me I love me some good camera work.

EDIT:

Needed to edit my post as I just say Mictlantechutli's comment and it got me thinking. When people complain about the special effects of a comic book movie I get a little annoyed because you have to remember it is a comic book made into a movie...not just a book where you have to imagine whats going on. A comic book already has the graphics to go along with the words. I like the way they do special effects for comic book movies. Especially when they did Sin City...I loved how they made it look like a comic book but in a movie.

Don't get me wrong. All the special effects were really well done. A lot of it was frame for frame from the comic like Sin City, which I loved.

In my opinion, when remaking a Frank Miller graphic novel, it has to be perfect. He's such an icon that you can't mess up or you'll have a bunch of nerds on a rampage. So I didn't mind the green screen. I know it was necessary but it destracted me because I'm an artsy kid and start thinking about how it was done.

I didnt think ti was int he least bit homoerotic. there were no semi references to "companionship", no semi nude male grappling, just explicit violence. Men in loincloths doesnt necesarrily make it homoerotic. But I am not one to judge if that is your thing ;)
