National CineMedia will be promoting the upcoming Oct 30/31 “Halloween” screenings in theatres throughout October, including a 30-second promo in its FirstLook pre-show. VOOM’s Monsters HD is TV’s first and only high-definition horror and creature feature channel (website: www.monstershd.com).
The original “Halloween,” which made a star of Jamie Lee Curtis, was directed by John Carpenter and produced by Trancas International founder Moustapha Akkad, father of Malek Akkad. (Editor’s Note: Moustapha Akkad was killed in November 2005 by a terrorist bombing at a hotel in Jordan.)
Since l978, eight “Halloween” films have scared audiences around the world. In late October 2006, Trancas International, producer Malek Akkad and writer/director Rob Zombie will begin pre-production on “Halloween 9,” which will be distributed to theaters nationally on Oct. 19, 2007, by Bob and Harvey Weinsteins’ Dimension Films.
Regarding the reissue of “Halloween,” Mr. Akkad said, “For close to 30 years, the fascination and demand for all things ‘Halloween’ has never faded for us. Before his death*, my father wanted fans to have the chance to see this classic horror tale once again in theaters. Working with National CineMedia we now have the opportunity to present the original ‘Halloween’ on Halloween night. We want to let our fans know that we still love this franchise as much as they do!”
“We’re excited to use our Digital Content Network technology to bring this chilling classic back to the theatres, allowing a generation of horror buffs who grew up watching it on video to experience it the way it was meant to se seen – on the big screen,” said Dan Diamond, vice president of Digital Programming with National CineMedia. “’Halloween’ will be even more bloodcurdling in High-Definition.”
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to participate and present ‘HALLOWEEN’ on Halloween,” said David Sehring, Senior Vice President and General Manager of VOOM'S MONSTERS HD, TV's first and only high definition horror channel. “We celebrate Halloween every day on Monsters HD, and are always proud to feature Michael Myers, who is the ultimate ‘American Monster’ in my opinion. We know that his movie franchise will continue to be an integral part of Monsters HD's definitive, all-star lineup of horror icons and creature characters.”
Rob Zombie said, “I have the privilege of re-imagining ‘Halloween’ for a new generation of audiences with our new production coming out next year. The original ‘Halloween’ is hallowed ground to me, and I’m glad that audiences will be able to see it again in theaters for the first time since 1978.”
Zombie adds, "Our new film will be a bit of a prequel and a remake, combined. After close to 30 years and a lot of movies, a very scary character became something of a Halloween cliché, with Michael Myers dolls that play the Halloween music when you press their stomachs. By the end of the ‘Halloween’ sequel cycle, there was little connection left to the original. I take the original film very seriously, and I want to make it terrifying again."
ABOUT THE ORIGINAL “HALLOWEEN:”
While many horror films have been released involving teenagers getting hacked to pieces by a masked madman or gruesome killer, “Halloween” remains the mother of them all. The original 1978 cult horror classic directed by John Carpenter and produced by Moustapha Akkad, starred the then young ingénue Jamie Lee Curtis, along with Donald Pleasence, Nancy Kyes, P.J. Soles, Charles Cyphers and Kyle Richards.
The original “Halloween” tells the story of Michael Myers. Institutionalized since he was a young boy after murdering his sister, Myers escapes and is discovered heading back home to terrorize the quiet community which still remembers him.
On a cold Halloween night in Haddonfield, Illinois, in 1963, six-year-old Myers (Tony Moran) brutally murders his teenage sister after he witnesses her having sex with her boyfriend. Myers is then locked inside Smith's Grove Warren County Sanitarium, where he is placed under the care of Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence,) the only one person who truly recognizes the pure evil within him.
During October 1978, (15 years later,) Myers escapes from the sanitarium. After witnessing the escape, Dr. Loomis heads back to Haddonfield, since he knows that Myers will kill again that Halloween night. Now wearing a pale white mask, dark blue jumpsuit and wielding a butcher knife, Myers begins stalking three teenager girls-- Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes) and Lynda van der Klok (P.J. Soles.) With the help of the town’s Sheriff, Leigh Bracket, (Charles Cyphers,) Dr. Loomis hunts for Michael, hoping to put an end to his grisly, murderous spree.
While “Halloween” has been endlessly copied and parodied, it still remains the quintessential teenage horror film. “Halloween” can still make audience members fearful as soon as they hear Carpenter's chilling music and watch victim after victim being pursued by the shadowy incarnation of evil--Michael Myers himself.
