View Full Version : Jaws: The Remake

Superman Returns director Bryan Singer has always confessed his love for Steven Spielberg's Jaws. He even admits that he's fantasized about doing a sequel/remake (Jaws Returns anyone?), but claims he could never actually be part of such a project.
"I have fantasies about it, especially since lately they've been advertising this shark movie (maybe he meant Shark Week on Discovery?)... at all the bus stops, there are all these shark posters... It's got me in a shark mood... but, no, no," Singer told AICN. "I would never touch JAWS! That's something that's too... No, no, no..."
Singer continued, "I couldn't do it! I could do it! I couldn't do it to Steven! He's my idol!"
But what if Steven asked him to helm said fictional project? I think Singer could make one kick ass remake/sequel. JAWS needs to be brought back so it can be discovered by a whole new generation.
Singer's filmography includes: The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, X-Men, X2, and Superman Returns.
JAWS was released in 1975, and became the first movie to reach more than $100 million in domestic box-office receipts. The movie won Academy Awards for Film Editing, Original Score, Sound, and was nominated for best picture.

Yeah, this stinks of Harry Knowles' shit. Some of the other cats on AICN still give quality reviews, but all Harry does anymore is call sub-par films "masterpieces."
Sell-out, ass-kissing tub of goo.

maybe they could just make Shermans Lagoon into a live action film and call it Son of JAws or something.

I think a remake would be a bad idea.I would just rather have a Jaws 5(as long they do it right).

Why's everyone so pissed?
Maybe I read it wrong, but didnt he say that he WONT be doing a remake? Why the hostility? Everyone just read the title but skip the article?

My opinion is based on the fact that he even thought about it. I mean if the thought is there, and Speilberg wants to make a buck, like John Carpenter, then its a consern.

The fact that "remake" and "Jaws" are in the same sentence is too much for me.

Lets hope Speilburg doesnt sink to the level of sellout-ness that poor ol' JC has.

This is what I'm pissed off about. Not Singer, but the author of this article editorializing about how someone should remake Jaws.
If enough people say it, it will happen. And that must be stopped at all costs.

Why does a movie need to be remade for a whole new generation/ audience to enjoy it? If they want to discover it, go fucking rent it!

Some of the best movie in cinemia history are black & white. Back in the olden days, pre 90's or so people actually made movies because they wanted to and they actually tried. Now its all about money and lets see how much CGI we can put into it.
As far as scary old movies go, the original Night of the Living Dead, I first watched the black and white version. I thought it was great and its actually kinda scared me at one point b/c I watched it at night and my friend and I heard some tapping right outside the house and its actually freaked us out for a moment.
So the moral of the story is don't dis on the classics.

Man...are you serious? 'Cause I sure as hell wasnt.
That post was a J-O-K-E. Mocking the majority of youth today, who's thinking really isnt far exaggerated in my post. Classics beat new movies any day of the week. My all-time favourite horror film was made in 1931, one of the closest runner ups was made only 10 years later. Even though Jaws is far from one of my favourites, it has nothing to do with it being "old".
In fact, I just wrote a huge rant about how today's youth dont appreicate older films for a school assignment. A big section of ot was on how people wont watch black and white films.
The moral of the story is know who you're talking to before shotting 'em down.Comeon, I have more than 10,000 posts, I would have thought you would realise that I wasnt serious.

What he said. I was kidding too. I love Jaws, and 6 out of 10 movies I watch are black and white.

Alright, alright, alright. Some times its hard to tell if someone is joking when your reading print and nor hearing them in person. Besides I don't look at how many posts people have and just because you so many posts doesn't mean that you are a fan of classic movies and/or black and white movies. So a simple I was joking would have worked.
Like i've said in a few posts before, Jaws is my fave film of all time. (with the original King Kong coming a very close second)
I am curious to what (if any) new bits would be in the story or if it would simply be a scene for scene remake; if that is the case then i don't think any of our modern stars would do the character's justice: Chief Brody ... Harrison Ford or is he too old (or would someone of his stature refuse to be in a remake of such a well loved film), e.g if you look at say the King Kong remake apart from Jack Black, (who's becoming a household name), there weren't that many "a" list actors involved.
Anyway i suppose that's for another thread somewhere.
If a remake was made i would (out of curiosity) go and see it; and would (although quite difficult i imagine) try to give it a fair hearing.

Well yeah, besides that Adrien Brody dude, he's just an Academy Award winning actor. And that one chick, Oscar nominee...Naomi Watts...whoever the hell she is...

I didn't say there weren't any "a" list stars, but only a few.
As i said i don't think that many stars of the present could fit in the shoes of the original cast (of Jaws).
Below is some suggestions:
Chief Brody - Harrison Ford
Quint - Robert de Niro
Hooper - (can't think of anyone.... maybe * shock/horror* a girl) (I've noticed in a lot of scifi or horror films, women have been known to play scientists/experts (the brainy parts) with the men the action parts)
See what i mean, a dream team perhaps (brody has an on screen romance with hooper, just to spice things up) but i wouldn't imagine that those actors would be in it; but we can live in hope.
