Im almost 100% sure that I made a thread about this when I bought it a few months back, but my search didnt find anything () so Im making a new one.
Has anyone seen this? I just watched it a few days ago and really enjoyed it. The digital sets give it really unique feel, and the ending is just flat-out wierd.
Anyone?

Hmmm...well for starters it's a French film, and it takes place in the 1800's
It starts out with a detective chasing a man with a mirror-like mask through an old foundry. He catches up to the mysterious, cloaked figure...a pretty awesome fight ensues. The detective falls into a flaming pit, just barely holding on.
He looks into his enemy's mask, and asks "If I am to die...I must know". The masked figure removes his mask (revealing his indentity to the detective, but not the audience), and the detective, with a shocked expression, loosens his grip and falls to a firey demise. All this before the credits even roll.
We find out that the detective was the imfamous Vidocq, a real historical criminal that notoriosly became the chief of French police. We meet Vidocq's offical biographer, a naieve young man, and from here the story follows him as he investigates the death of Vidocq, in part to finish his book but also to avenge the death of his hero.
The plot gets pretty intense from there, so I wont spoil anything.
If you're the type that doesnt like subtitles this isnt for you - keep in mind that it's a French film.
One thing that really struck me about the film was that it's one of the first films to be shot with digital backgrounds/sets, and they are done beautifully. Give the film a very unique look and feel; there were many times that I was so distracted by the effects (The sky in particular), I lost track of the dialogue.
The actors all seem pretty good...cant be too certain as Im not fluent enough to always understand what they're saying, but they all seem to be pretty good for what it's worth.
Finally, the ending...my favourite part of the film. You wont find any spoilers here, but man...what an awesome ending. It's absolutly friggin crazy, and thats all that I'll say on the topic.
I found this DVD in a used bin for $2...money well spent. Highly recomended.

The new forum template is so... hard to get used to.
From your description of the detective's death, I really want to see it. I always pass it by at my local Blockbuster, never rented out, and always think of your good comments about it. Just never looked interesting to me, before I got a sense of the plot.
Definately picking it up next time I go.

I've seen in the French version when it got out in Québec. Weird movie, but pretty good nonetheless...
