Figured that I might as well post this here. It's an article that I wrote for my school's newspaper. Needless to say, it really doesnt apply to you guys as it's aimed at the stereotype teenagers of today, AKA Braindead on the topic of horror movies. Still, I think it turned out well, so enjoy:
With Halloween coming up, who wouldn’t just love to sit back after Trick-or-Treating and watch a good horror flick? The Ring, perhaps? Maybe The Grudge? Nah, everybody’s seen those. The Exorcist? Friday the 13th? Sure, they’re classics…but wouldn’t you rather see something more fresh? Something that isn’t already ingrained into our society? Something different?
For those of you that may have answered “Yes,” I present to you this list of the greatest horror movies that have fallen under the radar. The horror movies that are considered classics in some circles, but have been forgotten by the population at large. The Best horror movies that you’ve never seen!
1 – Dagon (2001)
Based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft, Dagon is a very classy little horror flick. The story centers around a young couple, who after a tragic yacht accident find themselves trapped on a rather eerie island. To say more would be to ruin the story, but suffice to say…things get pretty strange from there. Some of the effects are pretty bad, but the dark, dreary atmosphere more than makes up for it.
2 – Re-Animator (1985)
Though this one probably wont actually frighten you, it’s entertaining from beginning to end. Also based on a story by Lovecraft, this one is about a university student (Played brilliantly by Jeffery Combs) trying to create a serum that would allow immortality. Obviously the experiment goes horribly wrong, and we get to see all the bloody (and often hilarious) results!
3 – The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
Starring Vincent Price, the undisputable master of horror, this gory offering is sure to gross you out a tad. Price plays the title role, seeking revenge on the surgeons that he blames for the death of his wife. His murderers are inspired by the Biblical plagues, leading to some gruesome and very original deaths, not to mention a fantastic ending.
There are plenty of other fantastic horror films that didn’t make the list, including: In The Mouth of Madness (More Lovecraftian fare), Eraserhead (A trippy, symbolic nightmare of a film), Dellamorte Dellamore (AKA Of Love And Death, which nicely sums up the theme of the film), and countless others.
So, there you have it horror fans, some freaky flicks for this Halloween night. Remember, never be afraid to delve into some lesser known films; you never know the corpses you might dig up!
