...(preferably free) program to use for burning avi format onto standard player compatible dvds, and copying dvds whilst avoiding any irritating antipiracy measures?
Yknow...if one were so inclined...

Don't know about .avi because I want one myself. But as far as backups:

DVD Fab! (http://www.dvdfab.com)

It's a little pricy, but you get free upgrades, and you never have to worry about any kind of anti-piracy. You just click and backup.

Thanks for the info so far folks...I'll check out all options available to me.
How about this also - How do I take still screenshots of playing dvds? Every time I try the screenshot and paste kinda thing, it dissapears as soon as I turn the movie off...

dvd's and othe rvideo files are very cranky abotu that kind of thing, i dont think the image being output to the screen is handled quite the same way as the rest of the screen, so it isnt really capturing the video image.

Powerdvd does a nice job of doing screen captures, so that is an option. it is a great all-around dvd viewing program anyway.

press the c key

you need to set your preferences as to what format/location the image goes to (default from memory is "send to clipboard")

v6 and before you can only save it as a bmp, v7 allows for loads of file formats.

also change the setting for capture from "original video source size" to "current video window size".

play powerdvd in full screen mode and hey presto.....new wallpapers

I've been using convertXtodvd. It's really simple and it converts the avi file and burns it all in one program. Let's you create menus, add subtitle (.srt, etc) files aswell. Really easy to use. The version on the site has watermarks till you register it it but I found a hacked version on eMule that I've been using.
I'm new to the whole burning .avi to DVD thing and this has been the best program a newb like me.
