A CHURCH warden in a small Swedish town faced criminal charges after allegedly having sex with a corpse at a church where he worked, a prosecutor said.
The warden was accused of removing a woman's body from her coffin before performing sexual acts on the corpse on the night of August 3, according to the prosecutor's charge sheet submitted to Vaesteraas district court.
He was charged with “disturbing the peace of the dead”.
The 43-year-old man confessed to police and said that he also had sex with another dead woman, but the second incident has not been fully investigated, Swedish news agency TT reported.
He explained his actions by saying he was unable to meet women, TT said.
The man also confessed to charges of drunk-driving, four counts of theft and two counts of arson.
The first of the fires, set in August 1998, completely destroyed Surahammar church, 130km west of Stockholm.
His trial was scheduled to start on October 4.
