Two things:

What is the difference in the two?

Which do you prefer?

Death all the way.

I'm not a huge Black Metal fan but I really dig Bathory (their first album totally fuckin' kills) and Darkthrone. I hated BM for a long time but those guys showed me its not all dicks dressed in their mum's clothes trying to be scary.
A lot of the modern bands I've heard really suck and have got the lame Dimmu Borgir/Cradle of Filth/Manson thing going on.
I'm slowly discovering bands because I love a bunch of D-Beat punk and the black metal shares some similarites musically.

Wikipedia will explain the differences better than me:

Black Metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_metal)
Death Metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_metal)

^^ Fuckin' love these two albums at the moment!

Ah, ok. Now I see. Thanks man, I have been wondering about that for a long time now.

Personally, I prefer black, as I think a lot of DM is really rather boring and generic. Not that the same can't be said for black metal as well, but I'd rather listen to a Darkthrone rip off than a Cannibal Corpse rip off.

Death metal spawned some great bands.... Morbid Angel, Death, Monstrosity, Deicide, Obituary and Cannibal Corpse put out some pioneering records.

Some newer bands I dig are Deaden, Dying Fetus and Avulsion.

I'm the opposite I think most Black Metal is generic. But like I said I don't really know shit about it. What are some good bands?

I think Grindcore has had the more innovative stuff over the last 10 years or so. Assuck was probably the most amazing metal band since Sabbath..... their Anticapital album is a masterpiece.

Phobia and Nasum are great too.

There are quite a few good modern BM bands out there, but they tend to be the more underground bands that get overshadowed by the lame-ass Dimmu Borgir and that type. I'd suggest trying:

Leviathan
Xasthur
Woods of Ypres
Drudkh
Forest of Fog
Blut Aus Nord
Deathspell Omega

Thanks... I'll check 'em out at some stage and let you know what I think. That whole Dimmu Borgir deal of BM put me off for ages. Darkthrone should eat their souls or something :D

i listen to both....but tend to lean towards black metal....mainly because i like the folk elements and often martial themes

Bathory is by far one of my all time favorite bands

by chance did anybody see the film that was on Vh1 recently....some anthropological look at metal....anyways....there is an interview with the lead singer of Gorgoroth....it had me rolling on floor....those guys are just way too serious...."how would you describe what Gorgoroth is about?"....[long dramatic pause]"Satan." [drinks blood red wine]....classic

I listen to both, but I think I like "Doom" or "Stoner" metal the best (not my words, hence the quotes). I also prefer "Thrash" and "Grind" to Black or Death metal.

my current metal cds in my player are by: Mastodon, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Cathedral, and Emperor. you really can't go wrong with anything on Relapse.

that documentary is called "Metal" and it's awesome and available on dvd with a short documentary on the special features about Black Metal. that scene is my favorite in the whole thing. you left out the best part though...

"how would you describe what Gorgoroth is about?"
....[long dramatic pause]...
"Satan."
[drinks blood red wine]
"what does Satan mean to you?"
...[long dramatic pause]...
"Freedom."
[drinks blood red wine]

classic.

Especially considering the fact that Ghaal is now in prison for beating up a man, tying him up and threatening to drink his blood and sacrifice him to Satan...

And their new album kills. Didn't like the other two after Destroyer, but they really came back in full force with Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam
