A 14-year-old was made to drink his blood and urine, the Hamilton District Court has been told.
The jury trial of Shandi Barlow, 42, of Manukau, began before Judge Phil Connell yesterday. Barlow has pleaded not guilty to three charges of assault using weapons, injuring with intent, assault, wilful ill-treatment of a child and attempting to pervert the course of justice. The charges relate to incidents in 2003 and 2004.
Judge Connell was told by Crown prosecutor Rebecca Mann that Barlow, while caring for her nephew, Etekia Maara Araia, also known as Natanahira Hiki, now aged 18:
Beat him till he bled, washed the blood off in a bucket of water, then made the boy drink it.
Dressed him in women's clothes or made him strip to his underwear.
Often left him without food for up to four days. When he ate, he was made to sit outside in his underwear.
Punished him for breaking a glass while washing dishes by hitting him with a bowl until it smashed.
Refused to let him use the toilet, then smashed his head into a basin, leaving teeth marks, because he urinated in it.
