Man Dismembered Wife
Las Vegas, Nevada - A retired Ontario teacher suspected of killing his wife in Las Vegas may have dismembered her afterward to dispose of her remains, according to police reports made public on Tuesday.
Detectives found evidence that John Watson bought a 9-inch electric band saw, bleach, plastic bags and cleaning supplies around the time his wife vanished in Nevada, according to an arrest warrant declaration in Watson's court file. They also found 50-year-old Everilda Watson's blood in the shower drain of a Las Vegas hotel room and blood spattered and pooled inside the couple's Jeep Cherokee, according to the reports.
Nobody has seen the woman for more than a month, leading detectives to a single grisly conclusion.
"Detectives believe Everilda Duran Watson's body was disposed of and the body may never be found," detectives say in the report.
Everilda Watson was last seen alive on July 12 during a Las Vegas getaway with her husband. Her son reported her missing three days later after John Watson came home without her.
The 66-year-old retired Ontario High School math teacher was arrested in Claremont last week on suspicion of killing his wife. He has been charged in Las Vegas with kidnapping and murder and is being held in Los Angeles County jail pending extradition.
According to the reports, police now believe Watson lured his wife to Las Vegas with a plan in place to kill her.
Detectives are still uncertain how he might have slain the woman. They have gathered evidence, however, suggesting what he might have done with her afterward.
Their dismemberment theory is based in part on evidence that Watson went to a Wal-Mart in Las Vegas on July 13 and bought a gallon of antifreeze, Clorox bleach, a 40-count box of plastic bags, a spray can of odor neutralizer and incense.
He also went to a Lowe's home-improvement store in the same shopping center and bought the saw, an extension cord and the tools to assemble the saw, according to the reports.
Watson told detectives he and his wife stayed at the Circus Circus hotel in Las Vegas. However, investigators say Watson also rented several rooms during the trip at another hotel, the Tuscany Suites and Casino, under a fake name. He paid for the Tuscany rooms with cash, according to the documents, and security video from the hotel shows him checking in wearing a wig and fake mustache, the reports say.
Detectives say Watson requested a remote room on the ground floor of the hotel.
It was in that room, they say, that Everilda Watson's blood was found in the shower drain. They also found two large areas of what appeared to be blood on the carpet, although the reports do not say whether they were proven to have come from the woman.
When Ontario police searched Watson's house after he returned home from Las Vegas, they found the box of plastic trash bags with only 13 remaining and a utility knife. Both items had Everilda Watson's blood on them, according to the reports.
Marc DiGiacomo, the Las Vegas prosecutor assigned to the case, said he could not comment on the specifics of the evidence.
Both Las Vegas and Ontario police declined to comment on the contents of the reports on Tuesday.
Watson told police his wife's blood was in their Jeep because she cut her finger opening a package of flashlights. Investigators don't believe it, however, because of the amount of blood found in the car.
Watson also told detectives his wife left him angrily in Las Vegas and he believed she was leaving him for good. He told officers the woman left behind a note in Spanish claiming she was going to Guatemala. He said she left her wedding ring, keys and some of her credit cards.
Police also don't believe that story based upon the evidence they have found.
When police arrested Watson in Claremont last week, he had with him a wig, a fake ID and a bus ticket to El Paso, Texas.
Watson, meanwhile, appeared briefly on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, where a commissioner delayed a hearing on his extradition to Nevada. He is to return to court Sept. 14.
