I hate how metal has so many different classifications. Death, speed, thrash, black, life....it's crazy. Does this bug anyone else? I wonder if it bugs the artists to be lumped in to different groups?

well each style has to have a name, simple as that take a listen to ancient rites, black\epic metal and then listen to paradise lost, doom metal. you tell me if those should be under the same catagory.

What is "life" metal? I've never heard of that . . . .

I'm not being sarcastic. I'm serious.

to be honest i never heard that classification before...must be a subcatagory of either nu metal or love metal....curses on HIM!

I can say that most bands sound different, like slayer and pantera are obviously a different sort of metal
BUT I hate the term NU metal, bands who make an album these days are called NU metal, even machine head and pantera, this frustrates me

moonsorrow
12-19-2003, 05:48 AM
pantera isnt un metal... im not a fan but i cant call it nu metal unless its something along the lines of slipknot, pod, papa roach or something like that, just cause its new doesnt mean its nu metal.

mudsliptones
12-19-2003, 06:36 AM
see, slipknot is not nu metal
papa roach is, linkin park is, pod is
but slipknot not, it's not cause they use a DJ that they are nu metal, cmon
slipknot is to brutal for nu metal
can you imagine nu metal fest with headliners such as linkin park and papa roach, and then slipknot??
I know the fact im a slipknot fan will make people say, dude open yourt eyes, but really, slipknot is not nu metal, nu metal is more of a pop song with allot of muted guitars, now slipknot does not sound pop and have verry few murted guitar riffs
bands like evanesence and that new thing with the crows there (dunno the name but the song goes: ive been watching, I ve been waiting in the shadows) those are nu metal

You're completely off. Genre's exist and that's fine. But having a shitload of sub-genres is kinda crazy. And as many as there are for metal, it's ridiculous. I'm just saying that there could be a few less sub-genres. That's all I was getting at. It's confusing to me.

Life metal is what they are tagging christian metal these days. Which is another classification that probably shouldn't exist. Who cares what they believe in? If they rock, they rock.

And Mudslip is scratching the surface of what I'm getting at. He's pissed off that you have labeled Slipknot nu-metal. Any popular band that has come out in recent years has been labeled nu-metal. I bet that pisses them off too.

moonsorrow

the answer is easy, yes i can picture spiknot plaing with linkin park or papa roach, but yes slipknot is brutal, its altso nu metal...comon! "il slit your thrught and fuck the wound" how pathetic is that, i mean i dont min slipknot or nu metalers at all as long as they avoid calling themselves harcore or realise the fact that its nu metal.

and avnger... you have to split it up, take another cuple of examples then... nightwish is metal, but so is old mans child, hardest rocking bastartds i ever heard while nightwish are soft and easy going. they are both metal true... but they are altso diffrent kinds of metal. you just have to split it up.
the diffrence between some of these catagorys are as big as the diffrence between comedy and drama.

Okay, fair enough. I agree with that, but aren't some of them close enough where two catagories aren't needed? You know more about it than I do, I was just wondering.

I just think it's odd b/c other music doesn't have as many different classifications as metal.

moonsorrow
12-19-2003, 08:18 AM
well of course some of them are so close its hard to find a barrier, il agree with that, but catagorys are still needed.
the lines between death/black or power/epic for example are thin. but there is no way in hell you could compress the sub groups much more then that.

avenger00soul
12-19-2003, 08:26 AM
Fair enough. That's all I wanted to hear.

Tell me Moon, are there any popular metal bands right now (I'm talking about bands that get airplay, MTV, and so on...basically shitty ones but that's my opinion) that aren't nu-metal? Just wanted your thoughts on this.

moonsorrow

paradise lost has had a cuple songs on mtv, nightwish i hear are quite popular these days...both advertising and vids on mtv.
within temptation i hear they have a few songs on mtv as well.
none of them are nu metal.

the catagories dont bother me at all.. I do find that a lot of people that dont know too much about different types of metal get confused and says it is crazy.. and no I am not saying you dont know about all metal, avenger.. Just a lot of people that only know about stuff played on Mtv, or what they read about in hit parader or a magazing like this think that all metal is the same thing.. which is not true at all.. I mean there is so many types that it would be an encyclopedia.. Avenger I also wanted to point out a comment you made.. You said that metal is the only type of music that has more catagories.. that is because mEtAl FuCkInG RoCks!!!!! :D

I, for one, don't really care to figure out catagories of metal. I listen to it, and I either don't like the band or I do like them... and thats were it mostly ends with me. I don't stick to any certain kind of metal. Just my two cents.

I agree that Paradise Lost is in no way nu-metal (they've been around pretty long too). They've had some songs played on MTV ('Say just Words' or more recently 'Erased'), but they're in no way as succesful as bands like Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit. Same with Nightwish. So, I think, every metal band that's really popular (like platinum bands) these days, gets the 'nu-metal' tag.

On a side note: I saw Paradise Lost play at a gig here a couple of weeks ago, and they were great. Really enjoyed their latest album too. Before they performed that night, they stopped by near my hometown at a metal convention to sign albums in the afternoon, along with After Forever. That was pretty cool also.

Well, thanks for the compliment. I have to say, you've got good taste too. Anybody who lists Paradise Lost as their top band, is OK in my book.

About the Jennifer Lopez thing: D'Lo is short for my real name (David Lowie), and I've been using it since I first started surfing the internet (must have been 6 years ago or something). And then, Jennifer became popular and started to use the J'Lo thing. And basically, since then, I'm screwed! So I'm just gonna say on the record: I really don't like J'Lo's music. Hell, I should sue her or something, for stealing my idea. But then again, who really cares about some guy in Belgium, she would probably kick my ass in court...

After Forever didn't play live with Paradise Lost at the gig I saw, but they did play an acoustic set at the metal convention in the afternoon, after they signed autographs. I have to say, the lead singer was amazing live. She really has a great voice. I hope to see them sometime again soon, but then in a real set, because the acoustic set was way to short (30 minutes or so). But then again, the entrance was only about 2,5 euro (= 3 dollars), so I wasn't complaining.

Sounds cool. In Belgium there's a two day metal festival called 'Graspop' at the end of June. Last year I saw Type O Negative, Anthrax, Within Temptation, Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Stratovarius, Apocalyptica, Ministry, Alice Cooper, Prong & Sepultura amongst other performers. For this year Motörhead, Testament, Judas Priest, Anthrax & Alice Cooper (the last 2 for the second year in a row) have confirmed. So it looks like it's gonna be another killer edition. I love metal festivals, the atmosphere is way cooler there than at other festivals... And the music too, of course.

sounds exelent, alot of good bands there, specialy within temptation alice and iron, have been listening to iron maiden since i was about the size of a grape.
the dream though is to see the summer breeze festival in germany. every year i look at the line up and i dont se one single crappy band, just armies upon armies of hi quality metal
