Pick.
State Your opinion.
Why?

Ive seen them all, but BARELY remember the first. I recently re watched 2, and it was an AMAZING movie experience. I cant watch it over and over again.
3 is great. But 2 was just awesome.

1 isnt as humorous, and being that i cant remember it very well, i find it hard to even picture ash without his bad ass attitude.
I jsut saw the trailer for 1, and it look awesome, but has a totally differnet vibe.

The first film is for the old-school, I think - it is raw, dark and fairly downbeat.

The sequel lightens things up a lot as you say, with more a slant towards humour making the gore rather comical and less effective than in the original.

It also revolved almost entirely around the hero, and hero-driven horror movies are a different beast. In Evil Dead, it was the things and forces in the forest that were the main attractions.

The second.

Because it has the best story, the biggest budget and most important.... All the best lines.

Evil Dead 2 was Evil Dead+

The first is classic, but the second is just great. the laughing deer head is one of the freakiest looking things on film.

Evil Dead.

I did like #2 but i watched the origional over and over again till i almost wore out the tape.

one of the best - most influential horror films (at least to me) ever.

The Evil Dead

Why?: I liked how Ash kind of became the main character halfway through and it was just a great horror movie where as the 2nd and 3rd movies weren't pure horror. I still loved the second and third movies though. The Evil Dead is also the second DVD I ever bought.

Here's how I'd score them:

The Evil Dead 92%
Evil Dead II 87%
Army of Darkness 78%

to at least partailly agree with you, evil dead was so influential, the guy who made it remade it for it's own sequal. that is influence... :)

Evil Dead

2 was good but as stated...more geared towards humor. The first was pretty brutal for its time.

The tree scene always got me....

i mean really, how many movies have a woman being brutally raped by trees?

The Evil Dead

Come on, it's the ultimate in horror. It's weird, it's freaky, it's fun, it's just downright awesome.

Evil Dead 2 would definately come in second. Another great film.

Army of Darkness was always just "okay" for me. I never saw anything too spectacular in it.

The Evil Dead. One of the best horror movies made.
Evil Dead 2 was great too, but it didn't scare the hell out of me like the original.

Yeah it's been so long since I saw the first movie with Ash, but I seem to remember it being more horror like rather than comical. It was a very piloty film.

I actually prefer the second Evil Dead to the first, simply because Ash starts off badass already, with his boomstick and chainsaw arm :D

Evil Dead II

Halloween night, watching horror movies on Shadow Lane (horror/mystery movie channel), back when I was terrified of horror movies (they made me cry hysterically), rarely watching them. So I had never heard of it, evil dead, or army of darkness. Starting to watch it, of course, I was scared. As soon as Linda was turned into a zombie I couldn't stop laughing, no movie has ever made me laugh so hard in my life, it was awesome.

Dig both. But II is the winner for me. AoD kinda annoys me now because a lot of people thrashed it and I've grown totally fucking sick of it.

2 is the one for me. i love them both, but if i'm going to sit down and watch one of them, i would pick 2 hands down. plus 2 is a whole lot better party movie.

the first one was dark and gritty and i loved it, but for me bruce campbell is just better in a more comedic role. his physical comedy and facial expressions compliment the goofy violence/gore the the 2nd installment perfectly.

Evil Dead 2 is a horror slapstick comedy, and I love it.

Love 'em both. #1 is creepy and yes...the trees

But my fav is #2 just for Bruce Campbell's brilliant performance beating himself over the head with the plates.

My 9 year old's fav is AoD, but he's just a little shit, what the fuck does he know anyway?:D

Evil Dead, brilliant for it's time, and still makes me flinch today. Evil Dead 2, more funny than anything else.

Evil Dead 2. It's gorier. Eventhough, the original has the disturbing tree rape scene. The second one has the humor, which I enjoy more than a horny tree.

1, because it was a movie that took itself seriously, it was extremely groundbreaking and gory, and it turned me on to the horror genre.
*edit* oops, already posted in this thread.

Very close call, but I'd have to go with Dead by Dawn (aka Evil Dead 2) just because of the whole Ash vs his hand thing, which is still in my book the No. 1 moment in the history of horror.

But then again, I saw No. 2 on the big screen when it got out (as opposed to The Evil Dead), so perhaps I am not completely objective on this...

Evil Dead 2. ED1 was trying to be serious, and was patheticly bad. 2 tried to be bad, and was so bad that it was hilarious.

In order of my favorites

Army Or Darkness (3) - Funny as Hell
Dead By Dawn (2) - Ash finally becomes a man and its funny
Evil Dead (1) - Its good but not as fun as 2 and 3
