this is one of those things that can kill a movie. They set a rule, then ignore it for the rest of the movie.
First example:
Starship troopers. Doogie Hauser explains that blowing off the legs of the bugs really doesnt do a damn thing to them, but if you shoot them in theri (very large) head, they will die immediately.
SO, for the rest of the movie, we see the troopers shooting off bug limbs left and right and ignoring the very large heads.
