Woman Dies After Falling From Car

Wheeling, Illinois - A woman who apparently fell out of her moving car on Lake-Cook Road died from her injuries early Friday morning.

Natividad Andrea Torres, 26, of 283 Eighth St., Unit 8B, was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 4 a.m. Friday, said Sgt. Scott Kristiansen of the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Torres suffered severe head and leg injuries in the accident, Kristiansen said.

Witnesses told police Torres fell out of her car as she was backing up on Lake-Cook Road.

"At this point, we really don't know what happened exactly," Kristiansen said.

He said witnesses reported Torres was driving in the westbound lane of Lake-Cook Road between Portwine Road and Milwaukee Avenue when she suddenly put her 1998 Ford Contour in reverse around 10:38 a.m. Thursday. Witnesses also told police she fell out of her car and was dragged underneath it.

"We don't know if she was trying to get out," Kristiansen said. "It's probably safe to assume she had the door open, maybe to look behind her instead of using her mirrors. But we don't think she would try to get out of a moving vehicle."

After Torres fell out of the car, it continued to drive off the road in reverse until it re-entered the road, striking a semi-tractor trailer truck that was traveling in the westbound lane. The car was lodged underneath the truck.

Police blocked two of the three lanes of traffic along Lake-Cook Road after the accident, causing long delays along the busy road.

The driver of the truck, a 37-year-old Wisconsin man, was not injured in the accident, and Kristiansen said he does not foresee any tickets would be issued to him. Kristiansen said there is nothing to suggest the truck driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, but toxicology tests were taken. An autopsy is scheduled for the weekend.

Kristiansen said the accident investigation continued Friday morning by Buffalo Grove police and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.
