A MAN has died after accidentally shooting himself in the groin while driving his car, causing him to smash into a power pole in Melbourne.
Police say it appears the 38-year-old man was carrying a loaded firearm, which accidentally discharged.
The accident happened on the Mornington-Tyabb Road, opposite the Tyabb airfield, on the Mornington Peninsula.
The man's body was found in the wreckage by a passer-by before 10am (AEST) but police do not know the time of the accident.
It is believed the man crawled into the passenger seat after crashing the car and then bled to death before his body was found, a report on Channel Nine said.
"Investigations reveal the firearm has accidentally discharged hitting the man in the groin area before the collision occurred," a police spokeswoman said.
Initially, police said the man had crashed into a tree after he lost control of his car, and his death was counted in Victoria's official road toll count.
