Teen Crushed To Death In Bakery

Australia - A teenaged apprentice baker has been crushed to death after being caught in an industrial machine at a bakery on Queensland's Gold Coast.

The 17-year-old girl became trapped in a bread drying machine about 6.45pm (AEST) yesterday while working at Karl's Good Stuff Bakery on Keller Crescent, Carrara.

She became entangled in the machine and was crushed, a police spokeswoman said.

"We don't know whether she was alone or whether there were others in the room when the accident happened," the spokeswoman said.

It is believed the girl died instantly and family and friends arrived at the scene soon after, police said.

The chain-operated bread drying machine is about 3m high and 7m wide, police said.

Police and Workplace Health and Safety officers were investigating the accident.

The girl had not been formally identified, police said.

Karl's Good Stuff Bakery won the family business category in the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards in September.
