I think this is the first horror remake that has surpassed the original. I'm 90% sure most people on the board don't agree that it's better than the original but whatever.

I did enjoy the remake more. I got a little bored with the original. The remake had better pacing and way better effects.

I actually havent got around to seeing this yet, but I really cant imagine likeing it more than the original. I thought the original was fantastic, easily Wes Craven's best movie besides NOES.

With all the great reviews its been getting from horror fans though, Im kinda interested in seeing it...

I didn't want to see it when I saw the preview, but my friend rented it and I was curious because I saw a few members mentioning it.

I liked the original Hills have Eyes but The Serpent and the Rainbow is my favorite Wes Craven movie by far. You probably won't like the remake more than the original but it's definately worth seeing, Aja was extremely creative with it.

I think both are good in there own ways, but the remake is definately better for effects. I kind of like the story for the first better.

They didn't have makeup in the 70s? How do you explain Tammy Faye Bakker? Oh well... effects are everything.

By the way, I did like it, one of the better remakes in recent days.

Just remember it is different from the original

The original had more character development with the people and what not where in the remake they just go right at it

The remake is enjoyable though.... like the one person said.. Aja did a fantastic job

At first I wasent goin to rent it, there was no way that anyone could compare...then I had my foot in my mouth. Good damn movie. The only thing..I liked the ending better in the original..other than that...totally fucking awsome!

It was pretty good compared to the original, but I couldn't stop giggling. I hate being a teen girl. I can't even shut myself up. I dunno, parts of it were pretty funny... Ok, I'm just digging my own grave here. I'm ready, tell me how stupid I am. I don't care, I think I'm pretty stupid too sometimes. :p Everyone has there moments. Mine was just during this movie...

i felt the movie almost had a TCM feel to it because the atmosphere was so strong.

Well, The first is more of a clash of classes. The upper-middle class family vs. the poor hillbilly family. No nuclear testing or such things. It's more straight forward. There is also more character development in the first.

My wife and I got this this past weekend. Out of all the movies on on demand it was either The Hills Have Eyes, or Syriana. Neither of us wanted to think much, and i had read a couple of posts here that people liked it, so we gave it a shot.

We loved it.

It was nice to see a brutal horror flick, even with some sexual references, that wasnt a horny Eli Roth titfest. The gore was just right, and the kills (of ,the mutants, anyway) were incredibly satisfying.

Its also nice to see a dog get to be a real hero for a change.

just a thought .. i havent listened to any commentaries (on either film) so i'm wondering if the girl's name (Rose) is a deliberate pun

(a Rose among the thorns)

i concur. i did like this version, i'm just not as enthusiastic about it as everyone else. there was all the hype going in and it just didn't live up to that (for me). i wish i had never heard anything about it b/c it was a good flick (i especially liked the end sequence where the stepson went on a quest to find his baby). i just hope the descent doesn't affect me the same way.

jesus christ her name was Ruby - not Rose.

I'm an idiot.

that being said .. i guess she was more of a jewel among the planets/gods ?

that makes sense

Personally I think she should have been called Venus...everyone elses names fot their characters to some extent:

- Jupiter = King of the Gods = Leader of the Clan
- Mercury = Messenger God = Lookout
- Mars = God of Battle = Most Violent/eager killer
- Pluto = God of the Dead = Im not really sure how this one works out, to be honest.

Venus would have worked perfect.

except they probably didnt think of her as the pretty one ..

It seemed to me that they were trying to avoid being too thematic with the names. i mean really, backwoods mutants (or hillbillies, depending on the version) that have lived their entire lives isolated from society probably arent going to be experts on the planets or Roman gods....

Probably why the mad rapist kill freak in the remake is called Lizard.

I had a pet iguana called "lizard" [i'm not too original..so shoot me]

Very good remake. Refreshing to see a modern horror movie NOT loaded with WB teen stars. Also great to see Billy Drago in ANYTHING again.

The remake is way better in my opinion. The original was boring, poorly acted, and had horrible fx. I know they didn't have the means to improve those back then, but still, it was too bad for me to like. That and I hate Wes Craven and a writer. Alexandre Aja did a way better job writting and directing.
