Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night or in a day, In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
ALL that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
ONE from the pitiless wave?
Is ALL that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Nice. A Dram Within a Dream is oneof my favorite poems. The Raven is one of the most popular. There's a website with most of his works on it. I'll try to get that for you guys. :p

As far as his stories go, I think A Descent into the Maelstrom is my favorite. The imagery is so scary to me, it actually gave me a fear of whirlpools. I guess that's why I stay out of the deep end of the pool now.:p

Annabelle Lee is a popular one. I certainly like it regardless.
Yeah, Poe has the talent to get under your skin. My mom won't even read it... lol. If I don't have anything to do, I'll end up reading his stories for hours. They never loose their effect, so its fun to read the one's I haven't read in forever.
I haven't read A Descent into the Maelstrom for a year or so, so I'll read that, amoung others, on my trip to California tomorrow. :p

I love teaching Poe because his stories/poems insert some life into an otherwise "by the book" class. It's also a way for me to suck my innocent students into my sick and demented world.:D

Creativity and addictions are not all that far removed.
There are many examples of this throughout the ages.
Poe is another example on an all too often tragic list.

I'm going to have to go with Annabelle Lee, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Raven. (suddenly I heard a tapping as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door...you heard me rapping right?)

Get this, when I was in high school we had to write an essay in World Geography about who our hero was from history. Our teacher proceeded to tell us the story of a former student who had written about Edgar Allen Poe. Well, this teacher made his student change his hero because he felt that was a horrible hero, with the opium addiction and what not. At the end of the story he told us that the guy was killed a few years later. Now WHAT does that have to do with having Poe as his hero I ask you?!? Absolutely nothing!!!!!! BUT, according to this teacher, his hero was the reason that all of this happened. What a crock of shit. I gave that teacher hell for the entire year after that.

Are you serious??? Thats so mess up. I hate peolpe like that. Its kind of funny how I got teachers like that all the time at public school, but as soon as I went to christian boarding school, all my teachers became open minded and sane. lol. :D

I love the Black Cat and Fall of the House of Usher, but every Halloween night - at midnight and by candle light - I read The Tell-Tale Heart aloud (and act it out) to whomever will listen.
We're usually having a partry. Always goes down big.

I had some colections of Poe, and recently I brought a book called "Complete Works of EAP", about 800/900 pages. It's the best way ti gave all of his works.

The Black Cat is for sure my favorite Poe story.
And is so well written! Writers "wannabies" should have a look at his works, as he his THE master.

It matters how morbid you prefer. A good starter for Poe would be some of the poems... I wouldn't recomend starting most of the stories until you've gotten used to the style of poetry. If you start one of the more morbid stories, like The Black Cat, you may get scared... then again I could be wrong. :D

Favourite would have to be The Raven, just on the number of times I read it.
Have any of you played 'The Dark Eye'?
It's an adventure game for the PC, similar to Myst. It's all done using stop frame animation and puppets. It's probably the best adaption of Poe work I've ever seen, including what I've seen in film. Very creepy game, but also extremely difficult to find. (*cough* emule *cough*)
Not very gamey per se, more like an interactive story or Poe museum. And it is old now, so don't expect high res graphics.
