not a horror movie, but im wondering if anybody has seen it because it kicked total ass. now one of my favorite action films, van damme kicks ass. almost bloody and morbid enough to qualify as a horror movie though. anyone seen it if so what did you think?

I thought it was fucking great! Good return to form for Van Damme and the action genre. Reminds me of the dark super violent flicks that came out during the late 80s and early 90s pre-Terminator 2 (when the genre switched to flashy effects driven vehicles). This is definatley a underated gem destined for cult status.

Ive seen it at the store, but I always dismissed it typical VanDamme fodder. I'll have to check it out.

Van Damme: "Thats for my wife."

Bad Guy: "Fuck you!"

Out For Justice is pretty mean aswell you seen that? Probably the only good thing Seagal has ever done (well Hard To Kill and Marked For Death were pretty cool).

I gave up on Van Dammit a few years ago. But nice to hear about his come back.

Van Damme comeback, MY ASS!!!

A Van Damme comeback is when he shows up in a movie where he KICKS more asses than he shoots. "Wake of death" isnīt one of those.

But of course, compared to any Steven Segal movie ever made, "Wake of death" comes out as a fucking masterpiece!!!

PFFFFFFFFTH!!!!!

Total waste of 4 bucks.

sry you didnt like it...i just love badass revenge scenes.

***Spolier***

and i cant get over that fight scene with the dude on the motorcycle, and he stomps on the dudes head to finsih him off, and it has a close up of van dammes face shaking in slomo from the impact. that was extremely bad ass.

He may have fallen off a bit slightly, but least hes still in good shape unlike the one they call seagal and his upcoming films look promising, hard corps, bloodsport 2 aka kumite etc...

Hmm I see hes been taken out of rush hour 3 damn, chan v van damme would of been niice.

my sentiments exactly. i love van damn, even the bad movies he puts out. if you guys liked wake of death also check out "in hell." its not quite as good as wake, but is well directed, acted, and of course has some great fight scenes. van damme is back, YEAAHH! *kicking into the air*

i always thought van damme was capable of decent acting .. moreso than most of the other action stars ..

all he needs is a good director ...

I actually liked in hell (even though he didnīt fight martial art style), Not because of the fights but simply because it was a good story.
I especially loved one of the first scenes between Van Damme and his huge, nasty looking cellmate:

Cellmate: "I donīt like people who talks"

Van Damme (while sitting on the can, taking a dump next to him): "Then shut the fuck up"

Iīm not sure i would call Van Damme a GOOD actor, but he sure knows the art of facial expressions. Pretty impresive. Especially in "The replicant".

bingo thats what made wake of death what it is, like when he shoots that dude one the ground and stomps that dudes head, hes got an expression that means business.

Or the scene where he comes home, after losing his wife, and just sits on the couch holding a picture of her while crying his eyes out. Not many action actors could pull that scene off without making it embarrasing as hell to watch, not to mention unconvincing.

Shit I Forgot About Hard Target Thats Defo Up There With His Best Also Is Nowwhere To Run And Sudden Death.

Hmmm Double Team Is Not His Best, But Its Good. Dunno What Rourke Was Thinking Tho............

Universal Soldier: The Return= Joint Worst With Streetfighter

maybe one spot, but otherwise i stand by my list. us, although it is a good 'action' movie, is not a great van damme movie. what makes a good van damme movie is: multiple martial arts fights, too many man-splits, a training montage, kicks kicks kicks...

Really? I thought Double Impact was fucking terrible.

My top 5:

1. Bloodsport
Easily one of the best low budget films that worked. A cast full of hard working actors that were hungry to make it big aswell as some genre greats making comebacks (if only for a few moments). This boasts some of the greatest fight scenes ever commited to film and spawned a shitload of imitators (my favorite was Bloodmatch).

2. Death Warrant
This had a tense atomosphere and is a really great prision exploitation flick. The last role I remember Cynthia Gibb in which is a pity she had a really likeable personality as a actress. Patrick Kilpatrick was a great villian similar to Richard Lynch in style (why these guys aren't utilised is beyond me.... no doubt tared and feathered by film snobbery).

3. Wrong Bet
Lionheart to you guys but I always thought that name sucked. Somewhere inbetween Rocky/Rambo/Death Wish and of course a reworked Bloodsport theme (done a lot better although not as bloodthirsty and nasy minded as Kickboxer). Great story with a lot of heart (hahaha) that's raw, brutal and believable unlike the slick Hollywood Nowhere To Run (which was part of the tuff action hero turning S.N.A.G era). I don't see this around as much as I used to but I'll always have a soft spot for it.... perhaps his best role. Down to earth story that had you rooting for the good guy because you believed in what he was fighting for.

4. Hard Target
Van Damme being hunted by Lance Henriksen directed by John Woo produced by Sam Rami? Fuck yeh great flick! I'd rate this higher but the characters are pretty one deminsional and I didn't really connect to them. This film has some great style and the final shootout at the warehouse is a fantastic piece of action cinema.

5. Universal Soldier
Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren's answer to T-2. This saw him enter the world of bigger budget vehilces (Timecop is probably a better film and executed more effectively but I like US better because its darker and has a more believable storyline). Lundgren's preformance owns Van Dammes and its a pity he never made it bigger than being Stallone or Van Damme's memisis
after some strong preformances in Dark Angel and The Punisher (flame me about the Punisher.... whatever. I don't care its easily one of the best late 80s action flicks).

.....and apart from Cyborg, Timecop and Wake of Death I found a lot of his flicks average at best. I didn't check out The Quest (which he directed) but a friend of mine who is down with 80s action shit told me it was decent so I might give the fucker a day in court.

right you are! i remember being 10-11 and watching bloodsport and being like, "yes! sex scene! i'm gonna see titties!" then they cut to a scene of van damme's ass...

i think he puts in his contract that the director has to write in a scene for him to showcase his ass.

i pretty much agree w/ you and death warrant is a highly underrated van damme flick. they way i composed my list was based solely on campy fun and "van damme-isms." universal soldier is probably one the better action films to come out of the nineties, its just not a typical cheesy van damme flick.
