Military Casket, Minus Body, Found In Desert

Tuscon, Arizona - Two men found a military casket on Drexel Road just below I-10 Saturday afternoon, Pima County Sheriff Deputies said.

Authorities say the men were headed out for a game of paint balling in the desert when the noticed the silver metal box lying next to piles of trash.

When deputies arrived, they opened the casket expecting to find a body but did not, instead they found hair and fluid.

Authorities do now know where the casket came from but say it did not appear to be damaged.

Lt.Bob Kimmins said the casket is particular suspicious, "The casket has the U.S. seal on it, the eagle with the olive branch which suggests that perhaps it's some sort of a military casket."

Authorities issued a nationwide broadcast hoping to find answers.

"Put out a nationwide broadcast to see if anyone anywhere in the country is missing a military style casket and the body it contained," Kimmins said.

UPDATE

MILITARY CASKET MYSTERY SOLVED:

Former occupant of stray casket had been cremated

The Pima County Sheriff's Department says a casket found over the weekend was stolen from a local mortuary.

A broken casket with a military seal was found on Tucson's South side Saturday, just off of I-10.

The Pima County Sheriff got a call from the mortuary who said they thought the casket was one they had taken to a local landfill.

Employees at the landfill also say they had a casket stolen.

Authorities say the family had their family member exhumed for cremation.
