the excorcist is the scariest movie of all time i think. i watched it today & it still gives me goosebumbs. i think its scary because its based on facts. it scared audiences then, it scares them now. you know that the director did his job when people today still talks about it. the acting, the storyline, the plot were excellent. anyone who can say that when they first saw it, & wasent scared, theyre lying to u. theres not movies today that can scare u like the excorcist did.

I 100%, tried and true, was not scared by this film. I watched it a few years ago at night with a friend. Naming it the "scariest movie of all time" also removes fear from it - since you're expecting so much of it already, before even watching it.

I knew the Exorcist was based on a novel but I didn't know it was based on facts.

Right up there with Jaws and Vertigo, this is one of the most overrated movies ever made.

I urge you all to read the book! Though the movie was well made, it lacks so much. The book puts the movie to shame, especially in terms of character development.

DO you feel the same about The Shining? I think that's one of my favorite 'classic' horror moives.

Excuse me for butting in here, but I think personally that the exorcist had been out of circulation for so long, that most of the hype was built around peoples memories about it. You have to remember that the time this was made, things were nowhere near as horrible in the real world as they are today, so people were probably a lot easier to shock than they are now.

Yeah, so I've seen the exorcist, I wasn't shocked, but then I'm not old enough to have seen it the first time round (just!). I saw this film only a few years ago, when it was first re-released on DVD. I'd already by this time seen a hell of a lot worse!

I saw Salems Lot when I was younger, and it scared the fucking living daylights out of me. And do you know what, it's still my best all time horror movie next to hellraisers first 3 films. To this day I still absolutely shit myself when I watch it, but I still have to watch it! But after all these years, it still makes an impact on me, and I think that's my exorcist.

The shining for instance though, I absolutely fucking love that movie too. It has jack nicolson as the main dude, it has stanley kubrick as the director, stephen king was the writer! For a combination in a horror film, it doesn't get much better than that. It's the perfect cocktail!

What do I mean? Does this sound like a good idea to you? Shit actors, low budget, not even a dvd release? Need I go on? I don't want to get into the whole remake thing, not only do I detest them on a whole, but a mini series is just an insult. In no way shape or form can anything ever touch this film, it's the best combination of actors, directors and writers ever known to man.

it didn't compare to the orignal though!

I ain't even seen this adaptation, but on paper it sounds so wrong. I'll be prepared to eat my hat, if somebody says otherwise. But you've got to agree, this sounds almost nightmare-ish.

You see the thing is, I don't even mind sequels. They can do as many sequels as they like for me, as long as they keep with the feel of the original and they keep a few of the same actors. Like hellraiser for instance, 8 films on and doug bradley is still scaring the bejeejus out of us!

Oh right, so you can get it on DVD. If you wanted to!

oh god, I heard they did the same with carrie too, but hey, going slightly off topic here.

Back to exorcist, yeah I've got to say I prefer it to the beginning, or am I opening up yet another can of worms?

Ah yes, I'd heard of this but not had chance to see it. Isn't this supposed to be what the beginning should have been, if they had a decent director or something? I ain't quite understood it yet.

paul schrader directed dominion, but studio execs threw a hissy fit when they realised he'd made a "psychological thriller" rather than some money spinning no-brainer horror film. so they scrapped the completed film, hired someone to "polish" the script and then got renny harlin (responsible for cutthroat island and driven) to make a more commercial version of the story

Nothing is ever as good as the hype, I think they drown in their own self importance when making the thing that they lose track of whats true.

not sure what that even means.

the people who make the film dont create the hype .. the fans do..
casual fans and serious horror fans alike have praised this film .. somehow thats the fault of the film ? pretty twisted logic.

its not even my favorite but i appreciate it's contribution.
its a solidly crafted film that has hit people on the right level for years.

people who were born 20 years after it dont seem to appreciate much that came before them .. thats cool .. just try to seperate 'hype' from film..

I always liked it but once I saw it on the big screen it cemented its importance. There's no way its overhyped. Possibly the most important thing a mainstream studio has contributed to the genre.

first of, your welcome entity 2000, to the person who thinks that gigly is the best horror of all time, that is not a horror film, and the person who thinks hellraiser films are scary, i think they suck. the excorcist is the one to beat.

I think in the case of The Blair Witch Project, detractors are so offended by such a simple film earning so much money then it must all be the fault of The Hype.

Of course by discussing the film and becoming part of its (negative or positive) buzz they become part of The Hype.
