View Full Version : Cheese in the Closet

Everybody has them....those movies that you KNOW are awful and cheesy and horrible....yet you still sit down and watch and enjoy them, even when people come over and catch you watching them and poke fun....what BAD movies are GOOD to you? For instance, I know Troll is a horrible movie, but I just can't stop watching it....and I get lots of laughs and groans from my friends when they catch me....

Gosh, Olivia, a good 40% of my collection IS the cheese and I put it out front and center! Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Rodentz, S Club 7 in Miami.....it's a nonstop cheese fest over here.

I personally love cheesy movies, especially horror. The lower the budget the better usually. Once in a while, I run across something so freaking bad that even I can't sit through it more than once(Breeders for one) but usually they make me laugh, and that's a really important commodity nowadays...
And on a more personal rant, Breeders is one of the top three worst freaking movies on the planet....I'd rather sit through a three day student movie marathon than watch that pile of crap again....I only laughed for the first twenty minutes and then it dried up my laughter and started actually depressing me....by the end I was in a corner with a paper towel over my face and my sister was hiding her face in my couch....

I have a bunch of these as well.

Street Fighter, though not horror, is a big one. I know it's an awful movie, but it's just so much fun!

I started a thread like this once and everyone ignored it :(

But your thread is doing fine ;)

In my opinion one of the best things you can do is to see NEON MANIACS. It's weird because it's a really, really terrible film, but it is so naive and silly that it creates a strange warm-hearted fuzzy feeling. It's stupid enough to laugh at but there is a bizarre poignancy within. I think this is because it is a gory outrageous horror film that dares to be romantically sentimental with its characters.

Miss Olivia

I haven't seen that one yet, but I'll check it out. I felt the same way about the Toxic Avenger....that's one of my all time favorites. Troma video is addictive:)

Big Trouble in Little China is the best movie EVER

Jack: What's in the bag, Egg?
Egg Shin: Earth, Wind, all that sort of thing.
Jack: Yeah, but what does it do?
Egg: Gives good buzz!

Uh... I watched Flash Gordon a few days ago, and Planet of the Vampires yesterday.

I think any 70's film that features one British character and the line, "There's something going on in this house, damnit!" with overly dramatic actions or under drama counts as cheese.

Of course, Squirm has none of those, but works just the same.

filmmaker2
06-15-2006, 07:51 AM
heh heh heh....Squirm.....that movie has a certain odd appeal. None of the characters seems really likeable, but there they are anyway, so you have to root for them...the scene with the city guy ordering the egg-cream (and having to explain what it is because no one knows what the hell he's talking about) is pretty funny.

Miss Olivia
06-15-2006, 08:30 AM
OMG I'd almost forgotten about Squirm....I actually had a dream last night about worms taking over people and turning them into zombies...the weird part was the worms ate the people and then regurgitated them as zombies, and they looked normal until they stepped into sunlight and then they were decayed corpses....and the weird part was the worms came down in little pods that looked just like whole garlic cloves.....I guess I won't be having italian food for a while.....

Yeah, but it's still nice for nostalgic purposes. I'm sure Dungeonmaster won't be nearly as cool as it was when I was 12, but I'll still enjoy it...next I'm going to send my sister a copy of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, because she's kind of sad and nothing cheers me up like cross dressing aliens from the planet Transsexual, in the galaxy Transylvania....

I think that when a person enjoys a bad movie, they are in fact loosening up a little and enjoying the imperfections of being a person--it is us laughing at ourselves a little and relaxing instead of insisting that everything be polished and perfect.

How about The Golden Child with Eddie Murphy? There was also this movie with Robert Englund playing the Marquis De Sade. He was either the present incarnation or a resurected version. Anyway, he'd kidnapped this modern woman because she reminded him of a woman he once had an obsessive relationship with at some point in his life. It was probably dumber than that movie Ishtar, which is said to be the worst movie ever made.

I thought Kung Fu Hustle was a lot of fun. Maybe a couple of details I might've changed, but it's really just a fun ride for geeks. Had a few good sentimental moments too. And great effects overall. It was a big enough movie that they needed to hire the crews of the other martial-arts filmmaker gurus to come in and create a bunch of second unit stuff, so, I thought it was worth seeing for the spectacle alone.

Up All Night With Rhonda... Now that takes me back. Not sure if I mentioned it, but as a kid I had a problem with insomnia. So I'd spend the night at my grandparent's house from time to time and wake up. My favorite thing to do was to sneak into the living room and watch her. 'Course she showed Toxic Avenger more often than not, but it was Rhonda, you know? You gotta love her.

Sad part is...I don't really remember much of the movies I saw. I was really young in those days. Plus, no matter how low the tv was, my gran would always wake up and shoo me off to bed.

Oh, and Amazing Tales?... those were good old days, the ones that shaped my childhood. I distinctly remember watching Night of the Lepus for the first time in that era. I'm guessing that you're roughly the same age as I am...strange but good times, being a tyke in the 80's...*sigh*

I remember Freddy's Nightmares....and the Friday the 13th series that was about a cursed antiques shop or something and had nothing to do with Jason....

I remember on one of those shows, there was a story about a doppleganger that scared the hell out of me, but I can't remember exactly which one it was....it had icky little demons in it though....

Oh well.

Now "Flesh Gordon" is one of those things, one of those freaky weird-ass movies that basically suck but they're too ambitious to be dismissed entirely (a pron comedy spoof with stop motion effects and spaceships??).

I rented a disc and listened to a very bizarre commentary by the director who described the experiences of one of the effects people working on the film, the guy who animated the "Penisaurus" creatures. Supposedly the guy kept having problems with his lights flickering while he was photographing his puppets and was totally convinced that the building he was working in was haunted. So: He brought the director in to show him how the lights were misbehaving during photography, and of course, they refused to flicker. "That's funny....it stopped doing it because YOU'RE here!" or something to that effect. Remember, this was the mid-70's. Very twisted weird movie, actually rather ugly and unpleasant for a fantasy picture, but it's sure worth seeing once.

First of all - for all those loving Kung Fu Hustle - give Kung Pow a go, it's awesomely silly.

For cheesy stuff with a strong appeal, I turn to Hackers, Mortal Kombat. Killer Clowns and Judge Dredd. There's just something about them.

Now, me not being a reader of the comic book helps, but to me, Judge Dredd was perfectly acceptable as a nice looking futuristic action film with strong comedy/satirical tones. I liked it.

Plot Summary: Angus and Lillie run a small-time carnival sideshow traveling around Ireland. When they meet a man who has captured a live mermaid, Angus is determined to acquire it by any means possible. Heedless of the former owner’s warnings, Angus loads his new spectacle aboard a ship and heads for America. Too late the ship’s crew learns of the deadly powers of their precious cargo.

An inventive and original tale, “She Creature” puts a new spin on the mermaid legend with excellent creature effects by Stan Winston.

The Columbia Pictures DVD presents the film in both Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) and in Fullscreen (1.33:1). The film is very clear and the colors strong. The DVD has audio tracks in English: Dolby Digital 5.1 and French: Dolby Digital Stereo with optional English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Thai subtitles. The sound mix is clear and the dialogue can easily be heard above the music and effects. The extras include scene selection, creature EFX commentary by Stan Winston and Shane Mahan, making-of featurette, photo gallery, filmographies and trailers.

They were playing it on a loop on HBO late night for a while. I didn't really like it the first time, but after the second or third time it grew on me, and I ended up liking it. I don't know if you call that slowly adjusting or being brainwashed, but aside from that, I like Carla Gugino....she was great in Sin City.

I was just watching "The Day It Came To Earth," a late-70's horror comedy which is a 50's period story, sort of, well, a "50's college kids vs. reanimated gangster corpse" thing. I hated it the first time I saw it, but then gradually grew to really like it. A piece of crap but that's part of its charm, I guess.

I don't think I have ever even listened to it. When my friends and I watched it a few nights ago it was like we were in Mystery Science Theater.( I think that movie is about the ?Chupacabra?)
