I know there have been a ton of posted Top 100 Horror lists, and a ton of voting tournaments. As far as I can tell, no one has ever compiled a Top 100 list coming directly from all of the members here. It is a massive, daunting task. It is also one that I'd be willing to undertake, if there is interest.

Before I say I'm going to do this, I want opinions from all of you as to how it should be done & whether it's worth it or not.

Here's a basic outline of how I'd think it would work.

I'll create a Gmail account specifically for voting. This would eliminate the trouble of my PM box getting filled up.

Each member would email a list of 25 horror movies. The first 5 on the list should be in order. Number 1 would receive 6 points, 2 would recieve 5, etc. on to #5. The other 20 needn't be in any order, just movies you think deserve to be on the list, each recieving 1 point. I don't really have any great ideas for tie-breakers, but suggestions are welcome.

After all the points are tallied, I'll dig up some info to post with it, such as average imdb/amazon rankings & the regular stuff such as director, year, etc. Then a member would be invited to write a small blurb about the movie (I think that's a cool idea to get everyone involved) The list would be posted in installments of 25 movies each.

All questions & comments are welcome. If you want to do this, I'll put forth the effort. If not, I'll reserve my extra time for watching more bad B-movies.

Thanks,
-Flayed

Okay. I set up an email account. Once I establish the submission guidelines, I'll repost it so the entries can begin.

The Flayed One
06-12-2006, 08:49 AM
Guidelines for submission

Please email all entries to [email protected]. In the subject line, simply put your HDC screen name.

Please list 25 horror movies you think are deserving to be on the list. The top 5 should be in order. Number 1 on your list will be assigned 6 points. Number 2 will be assigned 5, and so on until number 5, which will be assigned 2. the other 20 can be in any order, and will each be assigned one point.

All entries must be in by June 27th at 11:59 Eastern time, U.S.

You will more than likely be asked to write a blurb about one of the movies on your list that makes the Top 100. If you do not wish to be considered to write a blurb, please state so at the bottom of your entry.

When all votes are tallied, the winners list will be posted in segments in a thread in the General Forum. If the project has not received an adequate number of entries, it will be cancelled.

If you have any ideas, questions, comments or anything else, please reply in this thread.

Thank you all,
-Flayed

You can if you prefer. I would prefer an email account, because that gives me the freedom of not having to clean it out, where as the PM box has a maximum capacity. I have nothing against anyone PMing their list, it'd just make it a lot easier for me the other way.

I think I have one decent way to solve tie-breakers so far. Points will count first, followed by the number of people with the movie on their list.

Example:
Say House of the Dead (har!) and Octopus both have 13 votes. However, only 3 people had HotD on their list, while 5 had Octopus. Octopus would move 1 place ahead of HotD. That seems like a reasonably fair way to decide.

Wow! Thanks for the overwhelming response so far, guys! 6 hours into Day 1, and I already have several different lists with well over 100 movies on it so far!

I'd just like to add a few things that a couple of people have been curious about.

Anime horror is completely fine. I've already had several sent in, and I think every good Horror 100 should have a few. Also, as far as judging what is horror and what is not: that's completely up to you. I'm not going to tell you something shouldn't be on the list because it's more of a suspense/thriller, or whatever. The only way I'm going to throw a vote aside is if it's for something like Big Mamas House - you know, something that blatantly has no business even being there.

sent mine last nite.

Since this is a list of top 100 horror movies, I had to take into account the creepy, atmospheric, gloomier, dark, psychological, insane, maniacal, chilly movies before the gorific, splatter-fest, cgi-loaded, photographic tricks loaded flicks.

My top 10 stay the same as my signature, but the order is different. Hope Flayed got my email.

No, I didn't get yours, V. If it's easier, you can PM it to me. Several people have chosen to do this, so I don't stalk them:p

Bright and early on day 2, and we're still ahead of where I thought we'd be. My goal is to get no less than 30 members to participate, and we're almost half way there! Thanks to everyone who participated so far!

I'd really enjoy taking a look at everyone's list after you've collected your data.

I realize you may not want to just hand them over (in interest of peoples privacy or whatever) but maybe we could each post our top 25 on this thread or something too (In addition to sending it to you).... ? I don't know. Just a thought. I probably will post mine here once I've made my list.

Who knows... Someone else might have a #1 that I've never seen or vice versa ya know? It could just be a good source of recommendations to each other or something...

If you want to post your top 25 here, you're more than welcome. I'd suggest maybe waiting until the official list is posted (that way it's all a surprise when it finally hits.)

Thanks for the compliment, BTW. I just hope everyone joins in. I have a feeling if people don't want to do it, after they see the list, they'll wish they would have.

The Flayed One
06-13-2006, 05:52 AM
BTW, just so you know, at the end of the official list, there will be an honorable mentions section where every movie that received a nomination will be listed, so you will know what everyone sent in (names will not be associated with movies). They'll probably just be in alphabetical order, though, so you wouldn't know if somone had a certain movie #2 or not.

The Flayed One

Please note one large change: I've moved the final submission date back to June 27th. After doing a couple of practice posts to see how entries will look, I realized this is going to take a bit more time than I thought. I have a 5 day 4th of July weeked, and I want to try to get it done over those days. This will also give the members more time to submit their blurbs.

Thanks again,
-Flayed

While doing a little research for my list, I was at imdb.com & was a bit surprised to see what they had ranked as the top 25 horror movies of all time... Here's the imdb list. (I haven't even heard of a few of these!)

1 Psycho
2 Alien
3 Diabolique
4 The Shining
5 Aliens
6 Jaws
7 Faust
8 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (It's lined up on Netflix already.)
9 Night of the Hunter
10 Bride of Frankenstein
11 Nosferatu
12 Spoorloos
13 Onibaba
14 Dead of Night
15 The Innocents
16 Frankenstein
17 King Kong
18 Repulsion
19 The Excorcist
20 Rosemary's Baby
21 Kaidan
22 Invasion of the Body Snatchers
23 The Thing
24 The Invisible Man
25 Les Yeux sans Vasage

The bolded ones are movies I haven't seen. The underlined ones are movies I've never even heard of. If anyone knows anything about any of those in bold or underlined, please share some info. For instance, what the hell is Spoorloos? And is it really leaps and bounds ahead of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm St., Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead? (All of which are not even in this top 25 list.)

The bolded ones are movies I haven't seen. The underlined ones are movies I've never even heard of. If anyone knows anything about any of those in bold or underlined, please share some info.

Diabolique - Its the french flick made in 1955 which "inspired" the Sharon Stone version. The original was much much better in terms of plot, acting and direction, but the story's the same. Its about a man who is killed by his wife and mistress, but his body disappears. This one has a Hitchcock-ian touch to it. (I havent seen this one)

Faust - Its a german movie made way back in the 1920s. The story is based on the original work written by Goethe about the soul of a person pawned to the Devil. I highly doubt if its available in the US, but it was released in Canada so who knows (I havent seen it myself). A Hollywood version was later remade with Andrew Divoff and Jeffrey Combs in it, which pretty much sucked bad.

The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari - I m surprised you havent seen this german masterpiece of the 1920s. The cinematography and the plotline makes for some really great viewing. Its about this magician and his future-telling assistant, who predicts death and actually kills people under the hypnosis of the magician. A must-see.

Night of the Hunter - 1955 movie about an ex-con evil preacher who marries his cellmate's wife in order to get the cellmate's hidden sum of money. A great anti-hero role by Robert Mitchum. Another must-see.

Spoorloos - Like zwoti said, its a dutch version made in '88 which later inspired "The Vanishing" with Keifer Sutherland. If you have seen that one, you can skip this one. Both movies are similar in many respects.

Onibaba - Havent seen this one. It sounds Asian. Have to check up IMDB for this. (Netflix here I come!)

Dead of Night - I m assuming the 1945 one (cuz there are more of the same name). A deep psychological horror movie. You will really dig this one. Another must-see.

The Innocents - BW, dont tell me you havent seen this one?? Its on par with "The Haunting" as one of THE best atmospheric horror movies of all time. Go, grab your coat and run to the store...NOW!!

Repulsion - I havent had a chance to see this one yet. :( I have seen people rave and chant about the movie though. Its a masterpiece by Polanski which stretches the boundaries of the human psyche when one is left in solitude and a claustrophobic environment. Damn I have to get my hands on this one soon!!

Kaidan - Absolutely no idea whatsoever. Need a trip to IMDB for this one too.

Eyes Without a Face - A really superb french flick. Maybe made in the early 60s about an insane surgeon trying to put his daughter's horribly disfigured face back together by implanting faces of young gurls whom he gets kidnapped. A racy chilling movie. It had some of the most gruesome scenes of surgery I ve seen. Put it in your must-watch list too.

I've had it at the top of my queue on Netflix for like a month & a half now & it always shows as a very long wait. *shrug* I'll get around to it whenever they send it.

I'm not real big on ghost stories so The Haunting has never really appealed to me. Dead of Nigth & Night of the HUnter are probably both just before my time & I haven't gotten around to seeing them yet. Like I said, though, I intend to check out all those bold films on the list just because I haven't seen them yet.

The Dutch version and the American version shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentance. The quality is incomparable. I cant believe I forgot to put Spoorloos on my top 25. Okay, this is gonna get confusing....

I am aware of a Russian vampire film, Nightwatch, which is part of a trilogy along with Daywatch & something else, but none have been released in the US yet.

I'm also aware of an American suspense film with Ewan McGregor called Nightwatch where he's a security guard at a morgue.

I'm assuming the remake you are refering to is the Ewan McGregor one, but what is it a remake of? Is there another European film also called Nightwatch or is it a different title?

Regarding the Spoorloos - Vanishing debate, the American remake of the Dutch original was decent watchable fare IMO. I never compared em, cuz a remake cant be compared the the original whatsoever. I d give Spoorloos a 9, and Vanishing a 6, but that doesnt mean Vanishing is so pathetic and bad that nobody cant see it. Its worth a watch at least.

I'm assuming the remake you are refering to is the Ewan McGregor one, but what is it a remake of? Is there another European film also called Nightwatch or is it a different title?

Nightwatch - The Ewan McGregor flick which was released in 1998 was a remake of the original 1994 movie by the same director. The original is from Denmark, so is the director.

Well if it's the same director, I don't have any problems with remaking a film. Are they both very similar? (Like an Evil Dead & Evil Dead 2 sort of thing?)

personally i'd say HDC and whatever people are in charge of the site should promote the hell out of this list - its the kind of things papers and magazines eat up as filler entertainment news. but that's assuming that whoever is actually in charge (i.e., makes money off of) this site actually looks at the forum.

Thanks Zero! I really hope people take advantage of this and send in their lists before deadline. I think it's important for as many people jump in as possible. That way, it's OUR list, not just 25 of us.

On a seperate note, at the end of the week I'll probably start requesting blurbs for those movies which are without a doubt going to be in the Top 100. I hope to be able to post the entire list by the 4th of July. That way everyone can read it and discuss for some drunken/sober holiday fun.

Flayed, I will be out of town from June 23rd-30th but would really like to help out writing a blurb or two. If it's not too much to ask, would it be possible for you to let me do mine before I leave on Friday? (Like maybe just let me do one for a film that's already made the list for sure or something?)

Sorry to be a pain...

I m thinking of these when it comes to the scariest top 10 :-

(in no particular order)

Phantom of the Opera (1925)
House of Wax (1953)
Psycho (1960)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Asylum (1972)
Jaws (1972)
The Exorcist (1973)
Carrie (1976)
Alien (1979)
Final Destination (1999)

I m sure these would make it into the top 25 at least. But for the best horror movie, I d have to think differently and post later.

(point to remember, these are the most scariest movies, not the best horror movies, in my opinion)

Well, not to make a bunch of extra work for Flayed (though, hell what do i care) - after tabulating the results he should go back and see whose list was closest to the final top 25. that person could then be crowned Queen or King of HDC and we could all bow and serve their every whim. . . (assuming, of course, that I am the winner - otherwise they can just sod off)

bwind22
06-20-2006, 09:17 PM
That might be sorta hard to determine though... What if one person has all 25 films on their list, but in a jumbled order while someone else nailed the top 10 in order and the missed the other 15? Who would win?

Seriously though, perhaps you could use the same point system Flayed is using to determine the top 25 -

(to be honest, i don't really know if that would work - i trust flay to figure it out and then annoint me winner and then everyone can celebrate my simian superiority!)

Yeah, I didn't quite appreciate the mathematical acrobatics that were going to be involved when I first started. It's not quite as nightmarish now that I've gotten all of the bugs worked out, but my Excel spreadsheet still looks like an accountants wet dream.

I'll happily announce who got the closest after the list is posted. It shouldn't be that hard.

BTW, just remeber, you have ONE WEEK left to send in your lists. I'd like at least five more if possible to help settle the order a bit more. I'll probably pass out more blurb requests this Friday.

Or, I know what you can do! Post a list here of everyone that has submitted a reply & then we can all go get on the slackers who should have done it but haven't.

Actually, there are only two people left who said they would be contributing that I haven't gotten lists from (you KNOW who you are :D)

I've gotten lists from just about everyone I've expected to, and a few from people I really had no idea would jump in. There are a few that I'm a little disappointed that haven't sent a list or expressed any interest, but they still have 6 days left. So we'll see.;)

Ok, I'll be handing out some blurb requests today. They needn't be anything fancy, just a small paragraph about the movie & your thoughts on it. Blurbs can be PM'd directly to me.

On that note, I'll do a daily reminder, because right now THERE ARE ONLY 5 DAYS left to get your lists in!

Thanks to everyone who has participated thus far!

I know I'll probably get a few emails at 11:59pm on tuesday night. Hey, I do that shit myself with my taxes. I just really want everyone to participate. SO GET THOSE LISTS IN!!!

Every movie on the list has been assigned to someone. In the case of last night, I was tired & missed Jacob's Ladder, & I got LHotL from Austin after I went to bed. There are 2 or 3 people I haven't heard from at all that are starting to worry me. Of course its a reworking of Phantom..... but its a hell of a lot better interpretation than the Andrew Lloyd Webber bullshit that came out a few years earlier (not to mention the awful Jullian Sands version - maybe you're mixed up with this?). This flick is quite possibly Argentos finest work because its coherrant and and has his trademark staged murder scenes only this time round he ups the savagery.
Needles taped to eyelids so there's no option for the female protagonist but to witness the butchery and reiceive a villianous headfuck from the "Phantom". Stabbed hands, ex-wives prying eyes blown away, scissor driven interrogation and disembowlment soundtracked by Italian thrash metal legends Steel Grave. This flick is gold and is reinvention of old subject matter (including Argentos) that spews intensity.
But yo.... you're like down with Jerry Maguire and can't see the merit in this?

Don't get me wrong, I like the film, I was just disappointed that Phantom didn't make it(@Flayed-that's the problem I was talking about, not really a problem, just a disappointment like I said.) and...hell I don't know, I guess I was sorta taking it out on the decision to put a copy on the list. But it's a very good film which I do like quite a bit, if you like Phantom of the Opera has much as I do, then I don't see how you can't like Opera.

I'm an idiot...I was going crazy trying to think about what the other film would be along with Dawn and Halloween. I would've automatically assumed it was Night, but I didn't notice that the other Night on the list was the '90 version. Should've figured it was '90 and that '68 wasn't that low.

Well, except for the absent blurbs, that's it, guys! Later, I'll do the honorable mentions list, which will contain every movie that didn't make the list, but was nominated, in alphabetical order.

All you guys who rocked out your blurbs, you're fucking awesome. If, as zero was questioning, it goes for a few more days and someone doesn't send in their blurbs, I'll assume they're not interested and they're your guys' for the taking.

Well, what does everyone think?

_____V_____
07-01-2006, 08:07 AM
I knew Dawn, Night and Halloween will make it into the top 5. Some overhyped ones made it into the top 10 though, but maybe thats because of the individual choices of everyone.

Most of the movies down the ladder might have had fewer people who saw it, hence the lower ratings. I was pretty sure Shining and Exorcist would do better, and Battle Royale much better.

Interesting list...

That, of course, would be my opinion and when you've got the input of however many different people it's going to be pretty random until you get down to the obvious choices...yada yada yada...

Job well done of a cool idea Flayed.

p.s.
The only mild shock I got was when TCM didn't hit top 5 or 10. But it's right there at 11 which is why it's not all that much out of place then expected.

Can't beat the original huh? I haven't watched it since I was a kid might have to give it another spin.

I had 7 at 2...

There might be someone who wants an explanation of why Psycho is back at 13 or why you don't have The Wicker Man ect. ect. It's just a bunch of different opinions thrown together.

Why is Seven being considered a horror movie?

More Detective/Crime Thriller, I would have thought.

..serial killer movies belong in the horror genre...even "Silent of the Lambs" .....even if its more like a thriller

L.A. Confidential and The Usual Suspects are more conventional detective/crime thrillers, but when films are done in the manner of 7 and Silence of the Lambs, it's more of a horror/drama. Horror, like other genres, have subgenres.

I think it's moving the goalposts a little too much so far as Seven as Silence of the Lambs go.

Yeh I agree. Those films are more in the territory of "psychological thriller" for me. Horror is a lot more gratitious when dealing with the subject matter (i.e Maniac, Deranged and Dressed To Kill). They definatley have elements of horror and are championed by genre fans but to me they aren't horror films.

Hey, I didn't post any guidelines because this is what I wanted to see. Apparently, many people think Se7en is a horror movie, and one of the best ones at that. It didn't make my personal Top 25, but I was not offended to see it there.

I didn't put Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, or the Sixth Sense or many others on my list for the same reason... and it's not because I don't think they are horror movies. I just wanted to put 25 movies that I thought were definitely horror movies. I didn't want any movies on my list that were even remotely questionable in their intent or purpose, in order to avoid any circular discussions like this.

Okay. I'll give people till Friday to get me their blurbs or at least pm me and let me know they're working on them/interested in doing them. After that, they're up for grabs so we can complete the glorious HDC Top 100. I know zero wanted Manhunter. Anybody else has their eye on something in particular, go ahead and pipe up. It'll basically be first come first serve.

I'll take Silence of the Lambs and I'm sure posher would give you a book on how good Scream is.

i'm willing to do many of these - i'd really love to do manhunter but would also like to do the following (if no one else really wants them):

Creepshow
bubba-hotep
frankenstein
the shining
and Night of the Living Dead (which, by the way, is listed as 1962 when its release date is 1968)

I'd also like to recommend that the official list be both closed and sticky(ed). . . i think anyone coming to HDC should see the list at the top and get a sense of the collective 'taste' of the group.

I'll do Opera/ Night Of The Living Dead '90 and I Spit On Your Grave if you've got no takers

Fixed the date for NotLD. Thanks, zero, for pointing that out. I'll fix small grammar mistakes (apostrophes & teh what have you) as I find them.

What I'm really curious about is what the long-standing members who DIDN'T contribute think about the final list. I mean, do you feel it's a decent representation?

There are, of course, some things that sadden me (mainly that I was the only person to vote for the Exorcist III, but you obviously know how I feel;) )

Aside from that, I can't believe that __V__ was disappointed at where Se7en ended up. I know it's your favorite, and I think it's a damn fine movie, but look at what beat it out! TCM, American Werewolf, Night & Dawn of the Dead, the Exorcist, Halloween, Psycho...I mean, those are the movies that are hailed by almost every list I've ever seen as some of the greatest. I think it's a great honor for Se7en to be there with them. I can't believe it beat out Dracula myself.

No offense to you, bro! I know it's just difference of opinion. I expected Se7en to be in the top 30 at most. Never in my dreams did I think it'd break the top 15!

Still can't see how Phantom gets left off of a top 100 list. 10 or 20 maybe(although I don't agree with that either), even 30 or 40, whatever, but a top 100 list without Phantom?
