You're kidding, right?

This is just as insignificant as the "fingering" thread.

Nobody that matters cares about soccer.

None of us Americans get in to soccer (football) because it is not a sport that we excel at.

In baseball, do the Kansas City Royals have many fans? No, because they suck every year. Well, it's sorta like that for Americans & soccer. We can't get behind our team if they just get their ass kicked by Brazil & England and any other country they play...

Anyway, I agree with bwind (and yes, I'm being a crybaby Elvis). If we're going to get our asses kicked, then what's the point in cheering? Then again, I am still cheering for my team the Philadelphia Phillies even though their doing horrible this season. Damn you Phillies!!! *sits quietly* GO PHILLIES!!!

Soccer has never caught on here in the US because 1, our teams have never won anything major, and 2, no superstar players (like the Beckham's or Pele's) have ever come from here.

The rest of the world should be glad though. You don't want a bunch of drunk, redneck Americans getting involved in your soccer riots anyways. (I just picture like a whole arena of drunk Nascar fans brawling with an arena full of Brazilian soccer hooligans and it's a funny image.)

FOOTBALL (not soccer!) is, apparently, huge in the US during high school and university. The main reason it doesn't go beyond that is because the TV networks dont have sufficient room to advertise as they do during sports like baseball, NFL etc. With the exception of the half time interval there are no lengthy stops in play.

As for the World Cup, COME ON IN-GER-LAND!!!!!

The US hasn't a chance in hell of getting out of their group. I also want England to win. I'll be cheering for them. Goddess, I hope France doesn't win, gloating poo-heads.

Doesn't Brazil win every time around?

Secret desire? Ireland. They never do. They're decent, but they never make it very far. I do remember one turn they did make it decently far, but Italy whipped their ass. I had an Ireland World Cup t-shirt.

Haphazard...I'm not going to be a shit, but as an American I happen to like the World Cup, and it is, properly, football.

My bro promised that if he got some extra cash and we went to Europe this summer he'd take me to Germany for a game. Then I promised Zwoti for a stop off and a t-shirt. However, because of my brother's stupid air-head wife, they're getting a divorce so no trip to Europe, no WC game, and no stop off to see the illustrious Zwoti with t-shirt in hand.:( :(

Okay, Zero, give me the dates, so that I'm sure not to miss all the games. (It's also golf season, so I'm gonna be fighting my dad).

Last time around they got to the quarter-finals and gave Germany a run for their money, so unlike in the past, I'd say they actually have a shot...not a great one...but an ok one.

I appreciate that. I've been an Oakland Raiders fan all of my life. I still wear all my gear after a wretched 3-year span, same as I did when we went to the Superbowl.

BTW, I hope Aaron Brooks is an upgrade over KFC (Kerry Fuckin' Collins). I never thought he was terrible with you guys. Thoughts?

At least the Raiders have gotten to and won Super Bowls, the Saints are just fucking heartbreaking.

Brooks has every tool and he's shown he's got the talen to use them, he's just not consistent. But Moss' double and triple teams are going to help him a good bit, imo it's up to him, I guess we'll find out.

I might be skipping the golf season this year in favor of the World Cup. Seriously. I'm also hoping that the WC will cheer my brother up a little bit.

@ Austin... Sorry 'bout that. It's not that I wouldn't love to see the US take the World Cup one time. I would. I really would, and I'd gloat about it for years and years. However, my bro and I were talking about teams this time around, and apparently the US isn't doing so well this time. Every team has it's down time, even Argentina and Brazil.

The US team are nobody's mugs, they certainly can give the very top teams a lesson if not approached with caution. The big problem is the tough group you've got with Italy and Czech Republic (also Ghana but they aint doing anything). If you can get a decent result against either of those two you're laughing.

I agree, they don't have the greatest chance, never do and probably never will. I was just saying this time is looking a little brighter than usual due to their run last time.

what a performance!! SHAKA 'freakin' HISLOP!!! Amazing david and goliath match and T&T deserved their point (in fact, I'd almost say they deserved a win if they could've put a few more passes together in the final 3rd)

As for England - hmm, a spotty performance at best - I'm impressed by the defense and the holding midfielders - beckham is, as always, overrated and doesn't really get involved in anything but set plays and -i hate to say this about one of my Arsenal players- Ashley Cole was wretched! Otherwise Joe Cole and John Terry were co-men of the match IMHO!

Now its just to wait for the USA on Monday!!

Hislop was fantastic, just hope they put their no. 1 goalkeeper back between the sticks whent they play England on Thursday!

Liverpool bias I may be but I thought Steven Gerrard had a great game and very harshly given a yellow card by that fucked up referee.

trinidad were good, their defence played amazing, hopefully they'll party a bit much tonight and won't play to the same standard.

joe cole did well going forward, but once again (especially in the 2nd half) he was trying to dribble pass everyone......pass the ball ffs!! i'm not even gonna mention his defensive duties as once again he kept going awol, how many time did lampard have to cover the left side cuz the "pocket wonder" was either walking back from upfield or had gone wandering across the pitch

hmm, i think your 'mersey'-side is showing here. Gerrard did a decent job in holding defense but he shouldn't keep shooting the long range shot - three shots and three balls into the upper decks - either learn not to lean back or, better yet, let Lampard shoot the ball (his one or two shots were at least on target).

I agree with Zwoti - as the game went on the england midfield and forwards seemed increasingly impatient and trying to take on the paraguay defense one on one - not a good chance.

I was disappointed by the pairing of Crouch and Owen. I had hoped it would give a good balance of speed and height - but Crouch, who was fair at best, couldn't seem to get the ball into a shooting position and Owen was largely absent. That said, I don't really like the idea of Rooney and Owen - two very similar style players (and I'm betting rooney gets at least one red card before the WC is over). My feeling for a long time is that England hasn't had the right combination since Shearer left - he was a good, aggressive, 'target' forward who could create space for something to happen - Crouch is good - but not quite in that way. But, I'm not sure who they can put up front to make it work.

It'll be interesting when England play Sweden - probably the most realistic test of their worth.

My sentimental pick is England but Brazil will be very dangerous.
The England match was dull as hell, need to get my man from Man Utd Wayne Rooney on the pitch as soon as possible.
They also need to move Steven Gerrard up in the hole behind the strikers for some more offensive punch. That walking skeleton Crouch fucking blows IMO

John Terry, plays for Chelsea and it was a great clearance off the line, no doubt.

Thats right, put the big man on the back stick and lob long balls over to him, cut out the midfield and unsettle their defenders. Or give the ball to Rooney and hope he pulls some magic out his arse.

I m thinking Argentina or Germany, though on paper Brazil look like THE team to beat...

Its sad that the US is out. But then they didnt play as well as they should. I ve always been a fan of french football though (I follow Arsenal in the English Premier League, since they won the WC in 1998), and the likes of Henry and Zidane. Too bad Zidane will be retiring after WC'06, but then he has reached retirement age.

Players to watch out for in this WC :-

M. Klose
Ronaldinho
Kaka
C. Ronaldo
S. Gerrard
F. Lampard
M. Ballack
H. Crespo
J. Saviola
Jose Reyes
M. Essien

This 2nd Phase of the WC is gonna be really interesting and hotly contested...

I just wanted to add this, as I've been hanging my head in great shame as of late...

We have more than one TV in our house, and for the past two weeks those TV's which are only more than one have been tuned to the golf tournaments which have been going on along side of the World Cup.

I was really gung-ho about the WC this year too.

This isn't my doing, I soley promise you. It's my dad's and his friends.

It was a big thing with my brother and I as children (the World Cup). We'd be at the beach for part of it, come home for the rest.

And now...golf. Golf golf golf golf golf golf.

I used to like golf. Now I really hate it. For two weeks, it's all that I've been allowed to see on only more than one TV in our house.

Forgive me. I feel really ashamed. I guess I'll just have to wait for the FIFA video game to come out.:(

I thought it was a pretty even matchup. During the first half I was thinking this will go down to penalty kicks in the end, but the silly mistake by Puyol by tackling Henry and poor defending cost Spain the match. Ribery should never have been allowed to equalise...but it was an excellent goal nonetheless.

Talking about tough nuts to crack, France meets Brazil in the quarters. The first QF match is Germany vs Argentina though.

Jacob Singer

the problem with Puyol is that he only know how to do one thing, stop the attack at any cost ..... and yes our deffence sucks.

oh i didn't think so at all. i really thought argentina had what it took to go to the semi finals, but they played stupidly. after scoring the first goal , they started with the theatrics, trying to conserve the lead by wasting time and other crap... with over 30 minutes of play left. they should've been pushing for 2-0, but i guess they thought it would be enough.

well they were wrong. i'm glad germany won, even though i was for argentina in the beginning. they showed really poor sportsmanship.

portugal - england : the ref was shit. throwing out rooney was uncalled for. he's a brute, true, but it didn't look like he did it on purpose. plus the ref was right there. if rooney had deserved it, he would've thrown him out right away. instead, he was influenced by that prick ronaldo (may he burn in hell, the traitor) and only made his call after his intervention. i call that a bad ruling. ronaldo better forget manchester, that asshole.

portugal didn't deserve that win. but it doesn't matter because france will surely kick their ass, seeing how shitty their game is.

france - brasil : this was the kind of game you would like to see more often. incredible sportmanship (aside from a few outbursts from a frustrated ronaldo), a real respect between players. it was a great match. zinedine was incredible. henry finally got his. it kills me, but they were good... bastards !

i see a germany - france final. france looks like they're going to go all the way. ah well...

I predicted that any team who beats Brazil is gonna win the WC. Now France have done it, and they have a huge mental boost from this win. From the 35th minute till the 90th, they dominated the match.

Also it can be judged from the fact that Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and the rest were made to look real ordinary throughout the match. Both teams had a lot of chances, but France held their nerves better when it came to the end equation. A thoroughly deserving win for Zizou and his men. Hats off!

They will now play like champions, and go all out in the semis and the finals.

btw, they didnt just beat Brazil, they kicked Brazil's butt!!

hellfire1
07-02-2006, 02:19 AM
brazil hardly got any chance to score ! they never got the opportunity, france's defense was way too good. france created so many more chances for themselves. they would've scored a whole lot more if they hadn't been so nervous. they missed some really good occasions to lead by way more.

it wasn't a big win in the sense of the score, only 1 -0, but in the fact that brazil's biggest players could not do a single thing. who else saw ronaldinho not be able to breakway, have to retreat and finally pass the ball ? i had never seen that before until last night.

i would be happier for them if i knew that the media wasn't going to play it over and OVER and OVER again... right now they're dissecting every single match france has played. which i understand... but fuck me... could they fucking shut up ?!

Bloody bloody bloody damn! I was chatting with Zwoti while the game was on. I don't have a tv where the 'puter is so I went in the living room, found the game and hyped up the volume really loud. I was pulling for Germany. (I ran out of my favorite teams). Anyway, we got this massive thunderstorm and I had to turn off the tv and the computer. (T-storms are like lullabies and I woke up at 7:30 long after Z would be in bed).

I echo orangestar's VIVA PORTUGAL! However, according to Zwoti, it's probably not going to happen.

I didn't pull for Italy, because in the one time that Ireland made it to the semi-finals they lost to Italy. I've never forgiven Italy for that.:D I had my little Ireland t-shirt on and everything.

Zero

it was sad to see germany play so well but fail to capitalize on chances - this is, however, the nature of the game and germany pushed too far forward and left the italians with that one (and then two) opening(s) they needed.

in the end, i remain committed to my original prediction - -

I was disappointed tonight.

France played a really awesome game, Portugal just didn't pull it together.

They were going decent in the first half, they kept it down in France's zone, really good offence, similar to what we saw in the england match, then it just started to break down.

France's defence was awesome, which was the main problem, and Portugal could easily get it down infront of the net, but they just couldn't keep it there, France would be on them like stink on shit.

About the penalty kick, I respect that it's the ref's call, and he likely saw it different than I did in the replay, and afterall, there was contact made. But even you France fans can't say that it wasn't the least bit unfair, it was clearly accidental, portugal goes down first, France player rights himself, then goes down once portugal hits, they never intended for it to happen. I found the calls to be slightly against portugal, almost unfairly, but the ref's call is the ref's call I guess.

hellfire1
07-06-2006, 01:02 AM
just for all the dives and falls ( i lost count after 4), the ref should've been harsher. how many times did i get a slow mo of ronaldo throwing himself, or letting himself fall ? it's ridiculous. so no, i didn't think the ref was unfair at all. they should've been booked for pulling stunts like that, so they should consider themselves lucky.

as far as the penalty goes : even if there hadn't been penalty, henry would've probably scored. if it hadn't been for the fault, he was all alone, and right in front of the goal. so there.

well i'm rooting for germany in their game for 3rd place. :p

This is embarrassing... The radio station that i work for is sponsoring the viewing of the final game on Sunday, the 9th. They've sunk a lot of money into marketing this: Tv spots, radio spots, press packets, flyers, etc. It’s going to be a big event. aaaaaaaaaaahh... the way they made it out here, i thought it was a bad tackle. and i still maintain there was no penalty on malouda in the beginning of the match.

yes very peaceful night indeed. except i have to console the bf and try to sound sincere. :D

Not that I'm a big soccer fan, but I watched the finals. That headbutt was fuckin' vicious! It was the highlight of the match for me to be sure.

Can anyone lipread and tell us what Matterassi said to Zidane? no doubt it was something charming involving anal penetration & Zidanes mother....

If Zidane couldn't pull it together for the not only the final match of the World Cup, but the final match of his career then he shouldn't be celebrated as a champion of the game.

bernard tapie said it surely had something to do with his mother. others say that materazzi called him a terrorist. *shrug*

people tend to forget that this is not his first outburst. he's been violent in the past... 1998 world cup, and once against hambourg, even against south korea (i think) in the beginning of this WC. a lot of people think it was justified, i just say it was incredibly stupid, knowing how his team is lost whenever he's not there.

I think the fact that it's literally his last outburst is what people are on his case about.

whatever the case, obviously, he didn't really give a damn or he wouldn't have done what he did.

and though it's big, i highly doubt this will be what he's remembered for. certainly not here.

This evening it was apparently a combination of the two, with prostitution thrown in for good measure.

Honestly? In the past, I didn't think soccer looked too interesting and so never bothered to watch it. However, when I was stuck in the hospital for near two months with a TV where one of the clearest channel was the ESPN Soccer Channel, I got hooked on it...Well, that and Lucha Libre wrestling because one of the Spanish speaking channels came in pretty clear too.

I tend to like English soccer more then the other leagues...Favorite teams are Arsenal, Chelsea and of course, Manchester United! :D

BTW, everybody's got Zidane's awesome headbut, but where is a gif of the guy stomping on an opposing guys nuts while he's down?

Well, I'm guessing that if you made a shirt like that right now to sale, you'd make a freakin' killing worldwide...

Other then the US...And France of course. I do believe that shirt would be as unpopular in France as the American flag is...Or maybe even as unpopular as soap and razors.

not true. most of zidane's fans are behind him completely. they think the guy deserved every bit of it. the guy in question, materazzi, is now admitting that he did insult zidane, but refuses to say what he said to him (though he assures it wasn't about his mother).

and concerning rooney, he didn't stomp on the guy's balls. in the replays you can clearly see that it was an accident. the only one who did some stomping was zidane again against saudi arabia, during the '98 world cup, earning himself a 2 game suspension.
