There was a great Barney Bear cartoon about him buying a Mexican jumping bean; it jumps into a shoe tied to another shoe; the shoes start jumping across the floor; they get snagged on a coat tree with a coat and a hat on it; in silhouette this appears to be a menacing intruder in the house at night; Barney Bear has some scary moments experiencing this.

What I found really interesting as a kid was that even though we could see that this "menacing intruder" was an illusion, even though we saw how the illusion was put together, the scene was still very scary. The way to music built up suspense during the scene definitely helped though.

Also, "The Wizard of Oz" is really creepy all the way through.

Also, the "Sleepy Hollow" segment of Disney's "Ichabod and Mr. Toad" is pretty darn scary!

Sorry hon. Okay, in the old McDonald's commercials, there was the Hamburglar, who wore striped clothes and a mask, and there was Birdie, who of course was a bird, and then there was:
Grimace.
He was a big purple weird thing shaped like a teardrop, sort of a prehistoric Barney......only he wasn't a dinosaur. Ick.

Personally, I thought the Gmork from the Neverending Story was creepy as hell:

As far as the Grimace goes, he was one of the Ronald McDonald friends back in the 80's. Y'know, when they still 'Liked To See Us Smile.' As far as I can tell, the Friends have been mostly phased out for some kind of wretched urban-pop theme. Anyways, The Grimace:

I know EXACTLY what you mean. John Wayne Gacy didn't help either.

Nuns too, I don't know why they scare me, but they do and I'm not even Catholic. They just creep me out with their long black robes. I was about 2 when I had to have eye surgery and I actually remember it because I saw nuns in the hospital and that's when they started scaring me. Then when I was a little older, but still a little kid, I had a nightmare that nuns kidnapped me and kept me locked in a basement. Bleh! Creeeeepy!

Not a cartoon or Disney thing, but hope it still helps ya VC.

Alright, I have recently been thinking of something I'm going to devote some of this free time I have since I can't find a job right now, to. But what I need from you is some ideas.

When you were a small child, what cartoons, fairy tales or Disney oriented stuff did you find scary? And what about it scared you the most. Like let's take "The Wizard Of Oz" for example. Say you were scared of the flying monkeys, what was scary about them.

And I want opinions from everyone. Even if you were scared of a previously mentioned movie, but you may have a slightly different reason for being scared of it, go ahead and post it.

Thanks for the help in advance. :)

This is a cool topic. Do you mind me asking what type of project you're working on?

Funny you should mention those damn flying monkeys in your example, cause that immediately comes to mind as something that creeped me out as a kid. I think what made them scary was the fact that they were a hybrid. I think anything that is real but exaggerated or enhanced is always scary because it seems fathomable, i.e. King Kong, Jaws and Captain Kangaroo (ok, I'm kidding about the last one).

The Garfield Halloween special Scared the Crap outta me when I was a small child...The part where he's in this old mans house, and the old man is sitting by the fire, and then I blocked the rest out, but it was scary!

I dont know if this counts, but PeeWees big Adventure put me in the Hospital. The Large Marge part put me into shock, and I still to this day cannot watch it.
