The 80's and 90's left us with cult classic horror "icons"

Freddy,jason,myers,pinhead, BLAH BLAH.

We are already half way through this decade, and i ask you.

what horror icons have been born during this time?

some say the creeper. but i disagree..to me, he was like pumpkinhead. Not really an "icon".

The problem with horror icons or anti-heroes is that they tend to become more significant than the films themselves.

This leaves us with a WWF-esque situation of pantomime baddies appearing on cue to strut their stuff, evaporating any genuine horror tension.

Dracula, Frankenstein and The Invisible Man have had plenty of lame sequels and re-inventions over the decades mind you, but these oldies don't seem to take on the same hip following as modern indestructable/dead psychos - and it's all about upping the ante now in terms of outdoing each other with gory CGI deaths.

Well, I think most importantly it's brought us the future of horror directors. This decade has seen the emergence of Alexander Aja, Rob Zombie & Eli Roth. It's also brought out Takashi Miike as the new hard hitter in the horror genre.

For a lot of people, including myself, it's brought an awareness of foreign horror. Especially Asian.

It's also brought in a lot of remakes and unnecessary sequals to classic franchises that could have been left alone.

I kinda thought the guy from Saw was gonna try to fill those shoes...But...I guess not...

Looks like all we've got so far is...Samara...

Gonna take a lot to match Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface, Pinhead and Chucky

The Devil's Rejects is the only film so far that I think will go down as a classic in 50 years time or so. To me, at least.

Hmmm....I was thinking the same as Rayne with Jigsaw in mind. Also thought of the Creeper.

They just don't make horror franchise charcters like they used to. The old ones are just way to hard to match.
